Also be advised that I have yet to see a Clan Craig tent there.<< There was a lovely gentleman by the name of JP Helton who was very interested in Craig Genealogy and was instrumental in getting this new Clan Craig thing going. In all actualilty there never was a Clan Craig.....there was the Craig Family (in actuality, probably several Craig families in Scotland), but Mr Helton wanted a Clan Craig.....so he applied to the Lord Lyon. Now there is a Clan Craig, but I have to tell you....it is not like the old Clans. John of the Craig (the first Craig of record) started out as a vassal of the Earl of Mar and he fought in the service of Donald Mar defending the cause of Robert the Bruce.......John would have belonged to that "Family" and indeed the Ancient Black Craig Tartan was almost a duplicate of the old Mar tartan, except it had a tiny red thread in it....the Mar tartan did not, which would be consistent with the developement of early tartans. The present modern Craig Tartan was commissioned by the Craigs of Riccarton and granted to them by the Lord Lyon in the 1920s or 30s. One of the Craig Families became a sept of the Clan Gordon at a much later date than John of the Craig or Craig of Craigston. Now, it seems that all Craigs appear to be grouped in the Clan Gordon...at least in books sold to tourists.....but that is not correct, because Craigs descending from the early Craig families would not have been connected to the Gordons....some may be, but not all. The Mars were Normans and were not part of the ancient Clan system. We can now join the Clan Craig, but it is a modern improvisation. JP Helton did have a Craig booth at a couple of the Grandfather Mountain games before his death. He displayed the Ancient Black Craig tartan at one of those games.....I sent it to him.
