    3. Bud: You might want to see what you can find out about the history of the name Amboy: why it was significant, whether the significance is from Scottish or English or American, and what made it desirable as a town name. I couldn't find any references to an Amboy in Scotland either, but there are towns named Amboy in both New York and New Jersey, for instance. There's also an Amboy Crater volcanic landmark in California. If the historic significance turns out to be purely American, then it may just be a case of muddied history and the town you're really after could be here. Bud I have never heard of Amboy. Nor can I think of anything that even sounds like it. The Scots accents can corrupt a word so much that it can become unrecognisable. As very few could read and write years ago the places were just written as they sounded. Even today for example with a Glasgow accent Glasgow would sound as Glesga and Edinburgh as Embrugh. Sometimes even the correct pronounciation is nothing like the spelling. Milngavnie sounds Mullguy. and Kirkudbright sounds Kirkoobri. Kilchattan sounds Kilhatten. As to the Gaelic names well I would not even know where to start. ----- Original Message ----- From: <BnLFAMILY@aol.com> To: <CRAIG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2000 4:58 PM Subject: Re: [CRAIG-L] Scottish Craigs > Glasgow Boy: > Can you tell me if there is or ever has been a place in Scotland called > Amboy?
