Author: roses17 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.craig/2855.2.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Well- I have a Craig mystery. My gg grandfather, Shubael Edgar Swain lived in Jersey City, after his marriage and worked as a lawyer in NYC in the 1800's. He willed his summer home, in Tannersville, NY ( the Catskills) to a Lucy Craig- a Miss, I believe, and then at her death the farm was to go to his son Edgar. The only connection I can find is that SES's daughter married into the VanVorst family The VanVorsts and the Barrows had duplicate mansions in Jersey City. One of the daughters of William Barrow was an Ann Craig. Other than that, I can't figure any of this out or who she is. She lived in and took care of the farm, and I find her on a late 1800 census at the farm. But there are many Lucy Craigs around and she has me stumped. It is nice to find someone with Craigs in NJ. Author: MarilynRuth51 Surnames: CRAIG, HAVILAND Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.craig/4607/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ann Craig, daughter of Major James Craig and his wife Elizabeth, is buried in Tennet Cemetery, Monmouth Co., NJ. According to the recorded age at death, she was born abt. 1756. Tombstone says she was the wife of Stephen Haviland. The so-called "Bible" writer of Haviland genealogy in America, Josephine Frost, makes her the wife of Stephen Haviland who was b. in 1705, son of William and Hannah Haviland of Flushing, NY. However, This Stephen died about 1772, when she was only 16 years old. There's no way she was the mother of his numerous children. There were many other Stephen Havilands in the area. In order to determine who her husband was, it would be very helpful to track down more about her parents. Does anyone have information about this Craig family, or more about Havilands connected to the Craig family? thank you Marilyn (Heavilin) Current (descended from a Stephen Haviland of NJ, but which one?!!) 3. The closest connection I know of for Craigs with the given names you mention in SC are those who came from Ireland in 1773/74 and settled in Laurens Co., SC. 1. John Craig m Eleanor bot born Ireland ca 1730s Son 2. William Craig b 1760 Ireland m Jane Logan b SC 1769 Grandson 3. Thomas Craig b 1789 m first cousin Elizabeth Craig. All of the above buried in Duncan's Creek Baptist Church, Laurens County, SC. There are many other Craig families in SC (the majority of which came from Ireland between 1763 and 1773 - Jane Revill's book on Irish Immigrants) but not with this combination of given names per my study of the SC Craigs. About 10 years ago I was in communications with the Craig family member that has the James Craig book written in 1801 that was 80 pages. I was lucky that he shared with me ledgers from the general store etc of the family. I'm related off the Thomas Craig who was born July 11, 1785, whose father was William Craig. How are the folks on this communications line related to the Craig family? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [CRAIG] Ann CRAIG, d/o Major James and Esther, Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., NJ
    2. Ann Craig, by her tombstone, was b. abt. 10 Apr 1756, d. 10 Feb. 1826, bur. Tennet Cemetery, Tennet, NJ. Her parents were Major James Craig and wife Esther. Ann at some point married Stephen Haviland. There is confusion as to which Stephen Haviland she married. Most older historians have said it was Stephen Haviland, s/o Joseph and Mary Birdsall. However, this Stephen was b. abt. 1705, and died 28 Sept. 1772. Ann would have only been 16 at the time of his death, and he was 67 years old at that time - VERY unlikely! It is more likely that she was married to Stephen B. Haviland, son of Stephen, Sr. and 2nd wife, Sarah Throckmorton. If so, she would have been his second wife, following Priscilla. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Would James Craig be the British Revolutionary War Major? thank you for any help you can give me on this. Author: poorophelia Surnames: CRAIG Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.craig/2855.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Not so alarming as the journal has been passed down through the family and is still in the hands of a CRAIG descendant. The references to the later deaths are written in another hand than the listing of births, much as a family bible would be. I should have noted this. The remainder of the journal appears to be exercises in mathematics, economics and business, and also includes 2 lengthy poems. Many of the pages are dated, and on most James Craig has signed his name. It's 61 pages, and no, unfortunately I couldn't find a reference to location anywhere in it. The original was found in an old trunk on a CRAIG farm near Paris, Illinois. It has passed through the Thomas Craig (whom I had mentioned in my last posting) - William N Craig - Henry S Craig - line. I was told by this CRAIG descendant (whose identification is private) that James CRAIG was a shopkeeper in PA after the family moved from NJ. The Thomas CRAIG branch of the family then moved to IL. Wish I could be more specific. As I search for these needles in haystacks I will add more information. Again, as yet I haven't found documented sources for any of this information. I would love to join in with others exploring documents and sources related to this line. Janis Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hello again Cousins!" Am hoping that one or more of you might possibly be able to assist in breaking down the "brick wall" that has surrounded the below family of James McCoy CRAIG and his wife, Sarah McNUTT, that has withstood the past twenty-five or more years regarding this family. Have pulled out many hairs in frustration in trying to make any headway on the family, but find myself no closer to learning who the children were for James and Sarah, or what might have happened to any of them, that I find myself as of this writing. Back in the late 1970's or early 1980's some believed that James McCoy CRAIG's descendants had removed to Tennessee, but whoever had asserted same, was disproven within a fairly short time. Since then, have found absolutely nothing additional on this family. Might you be able to help in anyway whatsoever in shedding light on this family?
