I have not received the copy of the journal just letters back 10 years ago telling me about it and the many stories about how they came to the USA etc. I did receive a copy of the general store ledger but haven't found any information about the store and I even went to the location of the store years ago and spoke to people who lived there but they weren't old enough to remember. I'm trying to reach my old contact and I'm afraid after 10 years he is deceased. It would be interesting to know if we had contact with the same person. I've left a message for who I think is his son with no reply. I had saved all my letters from this individual and it was great to re-read them to get myself back into the flow. I have many binders on my family and extended family but had nothing on Samuel so this was very exciting to see. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am related via William Craig - Thomas Craig b. 1785 - Samuel Craig b. abt 1811 - Mary Samantha Craig b. 1843. Glad to know that you've seen this journal as well. What did you think of it? I have a photocopy of it, but I guess I'm a skeptic. After reading it closely I don't believe it is a ledger for a store and there's nothing in it to indicate that it is such. I think that it's a young man's account of school exercises based on the questions that are on the pages, for example on page 23: Of Division June 12th 1801 What is Division 1 It is a short way of performing several subtractions And shows how one number is contained in another And what remains How many parts are there in Division Four viz 1 The Division or sum to be Divided 2 The quotient or sum divided by 3 The quotient or answer to the question 4 The remainder which is always less then the devisor and Of the same Name with the Divident Note the divisor divident and quotient are certain but the remainder Is uncertine because some operation is division have no remainder How many sorts of division are there Two simple and compound... You mention that it has 80 pages yet the copy that was given to me has 61 pages. Do you have a copy you can refer to? I also haven't been able to convincingly tie the Craig family to a general store during the early 1800s. Have you found any proof of the relationship between Thomas and William? I'm still in touch with the gent who has the original book and have other parts of his research as well - but there are no sources to prove his statements concerning the family from Thomas' generation back in time. So many questions! Which of Thomas and Mariah's children is your ancestor? Janis Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
