I think my missing Craig link would have probably been born mid/early 1800's. As my G grandfather was born about 1872, HIS father was probably born 20 or 30 years prior (not 100% certain, but this is the average age range). My father's name was William, so it's not impossible that your first William's son, William, could be my GGG grandfather.... Do you know of ANY of these Craigs who didn't make it from Georgia to Missouri? During this time period, I find most of the Craigs to be in VA/NC. I'd consider most of the Craigs living in north-central GA (giving my G grandfather's birth around 1872)from probably 1840 or so to after 1890 to be VERY good candidates to be my ancestors. I know it's vague information, but I'm lucky to have that much. Thanks, Terry Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In fact, my ggrandfather was born in Habersham Co. in 1851. These Craigs were in the Burke and Cherokee counties of NC and intermarried and migrated with the Connollys. Unfortunately, I don't have a Joseph, but maybe some of the info on my Craigs will give you some leads. My earliest known Craig was William (d. 1794 in Burke Co., NC). His will names children Thomas, Samuel, James, William, Mary, Henry, Pleasant, and Elijah. I descend from Pleasant, but he died before the families left Burke Co. Pleasant's son, Elijah (b. 1812 Burke Co., NC), married Cynthia Emaline Connolly(b. 1820 Burke), and they were the parents of my ggrandfather. Elijah's brother, William Cyrus Craig (b. 1809 Burke) married Cynthia's sister, Catherine (b. 1810 Burke). William Cyrus Craig and Catherine Connolly stayed in Habersham Co., GA (their region became White Co. when it was formed in 1860). William died in 1880, I don't know about Catherine. The children I know about were Cyrus, Nellie Caroline, P. Emaline, and Elijah, but I haven't followed them. The Connolly patriarch was Cyrus Payne Connolly (b. 1779 Northumberland Co., VA, d. 1856 Wright Co., MO) married abt. 1800 to Mary Elizabeth Callicott (b. 1776 Prince Edward Co., VA, d. 1866 Wright Co., MO). I hope you can make some use of this info. Ruth Ann Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. All I know is, from my grandmother, that her father in law's name was Joseph Alfred Craig, HIS mother was a Cherokee with the English given name "Suzy" (or some spelling like that-Susan is a good possibility). Census records say she was from TN. My grandmother couldn't recall (or didn't know) "Suzy's" husband's name: "?" Craig. Census list him as being from NC. The logical assumption would be that my GG grandfather Craig left NC and, while drifting south, met and married "Suzy." Your Anne may have been a sister to my GG grandfather. This whole family may have traveled from NC to GA sometime in the early mid 1800's. I think there's a VERY good possibility that Anne could have been my G grandfather's aunt. There doesn't seem to have been as many Craigs in GA back then as there is today. Lets keep in touch! I think we may have a connection here! That was the writing looks like. In the 1930 census they were in Cobb Co, Marietta district. I believe they were share-croppers/migrant workers (which might explain the moving around. I have My grandmother grew up in Forsyth, and I know that my grandfather, John Paul Craig, had lived there and raised a family, eventually moving to Cobb Co. My James Craig married Susan Hopgood in Cherokee County, Georgia in the early 1850s. They lived in the area where Cherokee, Pickens and Bartow Counties met. I have nothing on them after the 1880 census. It is likely they are buried in Pleasant Arbor Baptist Church cemetery in Cherokee County, but I have no proof. I don't know where James Craig was from - one census indicated North Carolina. There was a William Craig in Pickens County and I suspect he might be my James' brother, but again, no proof. My grandparents were from GA. My grandmother only knew that my G grandfather was Joseph Alfred Craig. She also thought he had a brother, William. What I've learned from censuses was that my GG grandmother was from TN. My grandmother said that she was a Cherokee with the given name Suzy (Susie?). My GG grandfather may have been from NC. Doing a search of the 1880 censuses, I found in Crockett Co., TN, a J.R. Craig who was born about 1873 (the existing censuses of my G grandfather, Joseph Alfred Craig, that I've found indicate he was born around 1872). It also lists 2 "W." Craigs as siblings. Now, I could see how a J.A. could be misread as a J.R. and one of those W's could be a William. The thing that really raised my hopes was when I found that their mother, S.S. Craig was Susan (Coffman) Craig. Do you know, was there any Cherokee connection to this family? My grandmother told me she had seen a photo of "Suzy" dressed in full Indian attire. I've traced most of my other family surnames back to Europe or so, but my own surname, Craig, I keep running into dead ends. I hope this could be a match, but I know it's along shot. Thanks, Terry Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
