My area of interest is Thomas CRAIG, father / brothercousin of Ellender CRAIG who was born 1778 in MD (1850 census), married c 1800 James Poyner of NC or VA, and they migrated to Humphrey/Henry Co, TN c 1804. Ellender died 1868 in TN. Thomas CRAIG sold land to James Poyner c 1804-1820. There is no further infomation on him in TN, and we don'rt know if he migrated elsewhere afterwards. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Warmest regards, Sandy
Katherine Miller Craig was the daughter of John Ryle Page Craig, gd of Rev. Francis Craig, ggd of Capt. John Craig, and gggd of Taliaferro Craig. She wrote "A Chronology of the Craig Family," and a lot of her notes were incorporated into Virginia Webb Howard's BRYAN'S STATION HEROES AND HEROINES. Katherine Craig's mother was Jane Torrence Miller, her grandparents were Cornelius Miller and Pheobe Cary. If you look at an image of Kentucky, the furthest eastern point is in Pike County. It's a large county on the eastern border. Bill Davis wmadavis@kih.net **************************************************************** * * * Fax (978)334-7850 * P.O. Here goes with my Scotland Craigs again! I keep hoping some connection will pop up, and it seems like more Scots have been showing up on the list lately. Alexander Craig married Ann Cunningham 22 May 1849 at Eastwood, Renfrew, Scotland. I believe they had five children, all born in Scotland: William Cunningham Craig, born 20 Sep 1854, christened 17 Dec 1854 James MacDougall Craig, born 14 Nov 1857 (or possibly 1851), d. 1922 North Andover, MA Elizabeth Craig, born 30 Mar 1859, christened 1 June 1859 Ann Craig, born 29 Jan 1862, christened 13 Apr 1862 Alexander Craig, born 3 Dec 1864, christened 5 Feb 1865 I have information that four of the christenings were recorded at the London Road United Presbyterian Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Also, I know that one of the daughters married Alexander Peacock in Scotland (they had no children). She was in the United States (working at the Nevins Home in Methuen, MA) when her brother James MacDougall Craig died in 1922, but she went back to Scotland sometime later. When James MacDougall Craig died in 1922, his brother Alexander was still alive in Scotland. I believe that Ann Craig, 56, housekeeper, was widowed and living at 3 Newhall Street, Barony, Lanark, Scotland, with daughter Elizabeth Craig, age 22, occupation Cotton Weaver, unmarried at the time of the 1881 census. James MacDougall Craig married Ellen Wilson (born 16 Jan 1860 Scotland, died April 13, 1938, Stafford Springs, CT) in Scotland and they came to the United States in 1880. James was my great-grandfather. I'm going to Scotland in May for the first time. If the trip is half as good as the anticipation, it'll be great! By the way, thank you, Duncan, for the Glasgow suggestions. I'm a novice at this stuff, so all hints are appreciated. Kay Gleason
DESCENDANTS OF JANE TALIAFERRO CRAIG by H. L. Craig gives this passing mention. It says that that an abstractor found the only ownership in a tract of land in Pike County was in an overlooked grant of 40,000 acres to Capt. John Craig, and that there was a lawsuit, "John Craig Heirs vs. John Craig Executors," involving 231 heirs of Capt. John Craig [father of John Hawkins Craig of Boone County]. Someone once sent me a list of the Craigs listed in that transaction in Pike County, but I haven't been able to find it for a long time. I'd always heard that the heirs had all gotten an insignificant amount of money. Hi Margot: There is a query on pg. 1437 of Craig-Links that provides quite a bit of information about John and Phoebe. It says John was b. in Hawbottom Cemetery, Frederick Co., MD and Phoebe died in Berkeley Springs, WV. I will send a copy if you send your address to my email address. Yes, I know this, but I do not know how to research it from here in Texas. I have a passel of Scots Irish ancestors who came over about the same time: Faulkner Hutchinson Lessley/Leslie Craig Gillespie Wier McElwee Latham all came about the same time to the same place in South Carolina Oh, I should also name Jackson as Pres. Andrew Jackson's mother would be a ggggggg aunt of mine as she was a Hutchinson and my Faulkner married Mary Leslie Andrew's first cousin. Hi Margo- I don't know where those counties are located. It just says Pike and Letcher Cos. KY. The speech says that Katherine Miller Craig was the great grand daughter of Captain John. Cassie

On a recent trip to Woodford County, I looked at the Craig family file at the Historical Society. In there was the text of a speech delivered to the Bryan Station DAR in 1930 by Miss Katherine Miller Craig. She says that Captain John received 60,000 acres in Pike and Letcher Counties from the government for services during the Revolution. This land was misplaced when he died and not discovered until 1893 and they were sold at Burlington, Boone County in 1898. They were sold for a fraction of their value. Does anyone know anything about this? Why were they sold for a fraction of their value? Who got the money? Cassie
Sorry - correction -his nameis Hugh Boyd CRAIG.
Does any one Have any info on a JJ Craig Maury Co Tn b.1857 d.1877 m. Sally B. Foster. Stiversville,Culleoka, or Lynnville Giles Co Tn. Any help! His first name could have been Jessie. His father could have been John. Thanks Roy God Bless Love Roy Marlin and Jean
I found this very interesting as Andrew Craig son of Roderick died 12/25/1890, his wife Mary Heston died 12/25/1894 Alexander, their son died 12/25/1909. I haven't taken the time to check further but that seem quite a coincidence. Alexander married Christina Addison 4/22/1866. My William "Jock" CRAIG is supposed to be from Glasgow - he settled in Nova Scotia.....
Glasgow Boy: Can you tell me if there is or ever has been a place in Scotland called Amboy? I've not found anything there by that name. Reports I've found show one of my Craig ancestors to have been born in Amboy, Scotland. Bud Caudle Guthrie, Oklahoma
