    1. [CRAIG-L] Complaints about message content et al
    2. Mark A. Craig
    3. I counted at least SEVENTY-SIX messages posted just today, yet I haven't heard anyone complaining. Is it any coincidence that such a massive number of "un-silly" posts followed all the earlier "silly" dialog and subsequent complaints and unsubscriptions? I doubt it; I think it all energized everyone, much like the cup of coffee I used as a metaphor in an earlier post. Am I still upset about those complaints? You bet I am. NO ONE except the list manager has any business publicly maligning others' messages as silly and trying to control the flow of the dialog. Just because the topics of those messages were of no interest to you is no excuse. Some people are also wonderfully creative at hiding their true motives behind plausible-sounding rationalizations, and they do both themselves and everyone else a disservice in the process. If you want to be upset about something "silly", why not get upset about the ongoing difficulty that so many current list memebers seem to be having with simple message etiquette, which truly affects everyone? You know, if I were paying horrendous connect charges, downloaded the headers for Craig-L messages and picked which ones I wanted to download, then spent precious connect minutes retrieving those complete messages only to discover that they weren't at all what the subject implied, I'd be livid! Yet I don't recall anyone complaining about that in the past; no, they waited to complain about "silly" messages where the subject line was actually on-target and they had the choice to make. I have subscribed to Craig-L for more than two years, but in the last six months or less I have seen a steady decline in the quality of posts. This latest episode has been too much for me. I have no stomach for the way in which a few people so unaware and unenlightened are diluting the experience for everyone else. Needless to say, I can do little more than I've already tried to do, by educating people. I give up. Some of you are truly remarkable people, both personally and in terms of what you have to contribute, and you'll missed.

    3. Sending this response again, because my e-mail was acting up and I don't think it was posted: ---------------------- Judy Cato says Capt. John Craig's grandson Lewis Young Craig had a bible which said his grandfather's name was John Hawkins Craig. This is the only source I've heard of for this. I think in his time he was always "Capt. John Craig" or "John Craig" and his son was distinguished by being called "John Hawkins Craig" or "John H. Craig." This is how they were treated in a genealogy kept by Capt. John Craig's nephew Lewis Sanders, and in Katherine Miller Craig's materials, and everything else I've seen. To start calling him John Hawkins Craig confuses things, I think. 1. Re: [CRAIG-L] Scottish Craigs
    2. The oldest info I have on my CRAIGs is that they left Coleraine, Northern Ireland for America in 1743 or 1744. David, my direct ancestor may have emigrated with a brother named John. Prior to N Ireland (1795-1700?), these CRAIGs were said to be from the Glasgow area -- perhaps Renfrew -- but had their roots, in turn, on the Isle of Skye before moving to the big city. By unproven family tradition, the considered themselves part of Clan BUCHANAN, and, generation after generation, were employed as clerks -- that is, they could read and write, well! Another unclear possible connection is that they had married PATTONs, who ostensibly were descendants (direct?) of a Matthew PATTON, a Protestant dissenter who refuse to recant and was drawn and quartered in Glasgow. Anything make sense on your side of the pond? John Craig ANDREWS

My mother's maternal grandparents were born in Ireland in the mid-1800's, showed up in England in 1878 (six of their nine children were born there) and came to America in 1888. Her grandfather was born in County Down and her grandmother was born in County Antrim. While I have the names of their parents, I have no data on the parents birthdates or any more specifics on locations for anyone. (I do have the birthdates of my mother's grandparents.) I would go to my relatives, but the ones I have located are related by marriage or adoption and have no historical knowledge of the family. I've been told that the rest of them are dead. (If they're not, they certainly are doing a good job of hiding from me.) I have one clue to go on which would require that I look at the 1901 Ireland census. Do you know if I can do that in America? Everything I've read seems to indicate that you must go to Ireland to do your research, or else hire someone to do it for you. If you have any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. 3. Bud: No, the article didn't mention an actual year or date. I'm betting it was later than when Archibald was in Jersey, though. Should be easy enough to prove, maybe just by looking for history on that fellow James Drummond. Glad I could help... I love little mysteries like that. Of course this all means you're back to Square One about where he was born in Scotland. :-( Mark -----Original Message----- From: BnLFAMILY@aol.com [mailto:BnLFAMILY@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2000 8:35 pm To: CRAIG-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CRAIG-L] Amboy name is...
