John .... a question for the noble list master... I just rec'd a query from someone looking at older postings and realized that if they had sent it a week from now it would have been bounced (they sent it privately -- directly to me). Any suggestions on how I might make sure that some one trying to contact me from an old Craig-List posting can get to my knew address?? I have an idea ... how does this sound ... If you get an address from and old Craig-List posting and it bombs .... try sending an open query to the Craig-List asking if the person is still around but with a new address??? Anyway..... garygdc@gte.net is now garygdc@freewwweb.com .... hope no one else gets caught down the line .... gdc Gary D. Craig garygdc@gte.net
Hi Craig Cousins, Thought these articles might be of interest to some. Please note that this message is OFF TOPIC (as referenced by the "OT" in the Subject Line.) If you are only interested in reading messages specifically about CRAIG genealogy, please feel free to hit the delete key NOW. HOWEVER, while this message isn't directly related to our research of our CRAIG lines, I thought it might be helpful to read two well regarded sources for tips on etiquette in mailing groups. You will note by the copyright dates that these guidelines have been long standing. Please know that when someone posts a "suggestion" to our CRAIG list, that it is usually not meant as a personal attack on anyone and should not be read as such. We are a very friendly group and when people post suggestions, it is normally not a situation of having "rules for rules' sake" but an attempt to help you help yourself (or better find others to help you.) These sources were found through Cyndi's List. (If you are new to genealogy and haven't visited that site, check it out. Many, many helpful links...... http://www.cyndislist.com) Direct links to the exact articles are listed below. I've belonged to many newsgroups and mailing lists and I'd have to say that I think they have all used guidelines along these lines. Again, sorry for the Off Topic post but I hope that some of you find this helpful. Happy CRAIG Hunting! Beth Shields, CRAIG Team 18 Leader, Samuel Craig, Pioneer of Western PA ********************************** LISTSERVS/MAILING LISTS/ DISCUSSION GROUPS (Abridged) Some mailing lists have low rates of traffic, others can flood your mailbox with several hundred mail messages per day. Numerous incoming messages from various listservers or mailing lists by multiple users, requires extensive system processing which can tie up valuable resources. Subscription to Interest Groups or Discussion Lists should be kept to a minimum and should not exceed what your disk quota can handle, or you for that matter. When you join a list, monitor the messages for a few days to get a feel for what common questions are asked, and what topics are deemed off-limits. This is commonly referred to as lurking. When you feel comfortable with the group, then start posting. See if there is a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for a group that you are interested in joining. Veteran members get annoyed when they see the same questions every few weeks, or at the start of each semester. Follow any and all guidelines that the listowner has posted; the listowner establishes the local "netiquette" standards for her/his list. Keep in mind that some discussion lists or Usenet groups have members from many countries. Don't assume that they will understand a reference to TV, movies, pop culture, or current events in your country. If you must use the reference, please explain it. Don't assume that they understand geographical references that are local or national. [This includes providing a state if you are referencing say, Washington County. BMS] Keep your questions and comments relevant to the focus of the discussion group. If another person posts a comment or question that is off the subject, do NOT reply to the list and keep the off- subject conversation going publicly. When someone posts an off-subject note, and someone else criticizes that posting, you should NOT submit a gratuitous note saying "well, I liked it and lots of people probably did as well and you guys ought to lighten up and not tell us to stick to the subject". When quoting another person, edit out whatever isn't directly applicable to your reply. Don't let your mailing or Usenet software automatically quote the entire body of messages you are replying to when it's not necessary. Take the time to edit any quotations down to the minimum necessary to provide context for your reply. Nobody likes reading a long message in quotes for the third or fourth time, only to be followed by a one line response: "Yeah, me too." Use discretion when forwarding a long mail message to group addresses or distribution lists. It's preferable to reference the source of a document and provide instructions on how to obtain a copy. If you must post a long message, warn the readers with a statement at the top of the mail message. Example: WARNING: LONG MESSAGE Resist the temptation to "flame" others on the list. Remember that these discussions are "public" and meant for constructive exchanges. Treat the others on the list as you would want them to treat you. When replying to a message posted to a discussion group, check the address to be certain it's going to the intended location (person or group). It can be very embarrassing if they reply incorrectly and post a personal message to the entire discussion group that was intended for an individual. When signing up for a group it is important to save your subscription confirmation letter for reference. That way if you go on vacation you will have the subscription address for suspending mail. Occasionally subscribers to the list who are not familiar with proper netiquette will submit requests to SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE directly to the list itself. Be tolerant of this activity, and possibly provide some useful advice as opposed to being critical. Other people on the list are not interested in your desire to be added or deleted. Any requests regarding administrative tasks such as being added or removed from a list should be made to the appropriate area, not the list itself. For full list, please visit http://www.fau.edu/netiquette/net/dis.html © Copyright 1998, Arlene Rinaldi + Florida Atlantic University Also: Q: I posted a message and nobody responded. Now what? A: There are a couple of common reasons why people may not be responding. Maybe your question was too specific. (For example, you probably won't find anyone who has personal knowledge about your parents unless your siblings are reading the groups.) Maybe your "Subject:" line didn't attract attention. Maybe you asked about a name but didn't include any places or dates. Maybe you are being a bit too impatient. Try reframing the question and post it again in a few weeks. However, don't post identical messages over and over again, or you're likely to get "flamed" for it. Q: I was flamed by an unpleasant sort of character. How should I reply? A: Maybe you shouldn't reply at all. There are too many helpful pleasant people out there to spend any time worrying about the unpleasant ones. Starting an online fight wastes the time of thousands of people and won't endear EITHER of you to the rest of the newsgroup readers. If you want to fight it out in email, that's your business, but it's probably better just to forget it. Q: How reliable is the information people are posting? A: You won't know how reliable the information is until you check sources, but you will find good ideas and pointers to good information, and you will find some pretty bad information, too. Newsgroups are great for reading and exchanging ideas, but for doing good research, you need to follow up critically on the ideas you get. You'll meet some pretty terrific and helpful people, though. Hi Everyone, Periodically we have these little "skirmishes" on this otherwise wonderful list. I received a message privately asking if everyone was deserting the ship. The answer is a definite NO. For every person who unsubscribes there are usually one or two who subscribe. Don't ask me why, I don't know, but it is true on all my lists. As of today there are 289 members on the "L" list and 113 on the "D" list for a total number of 402 subscribers. Last month we had 263 "L" members and 109 "D" members. So, even with defectors we continue to grow. Thank you Beth for posting the Etiquette data today. I hope everyone will take some time and read it. FYI, my own list of "Etiquette Guidelines" which I posted some time ago are now part of the "Welcome" message. My best wishes to you all, John
Maybe the subscribers who bolt have led sheltered lives.....were raised in small families, maybe as only children....can't take contention and conflict. Ah well.
I would venture to say that MOST of the folks on this list merely shake their heads after a while and simply disregard the bickering which is probably done by ONLY A FEW - this list is a wonderful resource managed by very patient people who, I'm sure, find this very tedious after a time. I say kudos and thank you to John and Judy and Amanda and all the team leaders - I guess they don't HAVE to provide this service, after all. We should be thrilled there IS a Craig surname list and to remember that everything, like life itself, is a work in progress subject to ups and downs, good and bad. To all of the unsubscribers, good luck in your searches and be thankful you have been able to participate in this format, whether or not you were successful. Barbara in Wisconsin
I am on quite a few lists and I used to be a list manager for Rootsweb. This list is wonderful! Yes, we aren't perfect--but, we're only human. Now, if you wan't REAL bickering, I'll tell you which lists to join. This one is a piece of cake. Ima J. I haven't been on a list where there is quite so much bickering. I can't say that I like it. Hope you have a good time with each other and I hope that all of you are able to find the folks you are looking for. I had no luck at all. Thank you. Cheryl
I've been working on Thomas CRAIG for years and can't connect him with anyone for sure...good luck!!! Lauri
>>Please accept my apology everyone....no offense meant Mary Ann who means no offense to anyone<<< Mary Ann.....you have been on this list a long time and you have always conducted yourself admirably. There is no need for your apology. You were quite correct. John and I both have tried repeatedly to get the folks on this list to change the darned subject lines. I really have NO idea what is so hard about changing subject lines.....but, they are running a big chance of others on this list not reading and thereby not responding to the messages. Other lists are more cranky than this list about changing subject lines. Grow up, everybody!!!............Judy *********************************************************** cato@primary.net ***********************************************************
Come on, guys, help me out here. I know that there has to be more than one Thomas CRAIG. Can someone tell me which one is the father of my Mary CRAIG who was the wife of Oliver ALEXANDER born in 1732? You're the best! Ima J. I apologize if I made you unhappy.. Maybe my phrasing was not as good as it could have been ..but I meant no flame no harm and was only trying to be helpful...this list is extremely active and appropriate subject lines help all of us find what we are looking for. Again..I apologize to anyone, everyone who may have taken offense at my poorly worded message. I have been on this list for several years and am still hunting my elusive Craig's James of New Jersey and Samuel of Ire and Virginia I read as many postings as I can and submit as much information as I run across on ANY Craig line. One of these days...My wall will crumble. And if you stay with this list...yours will to. Please accept my apology everyone....no offense meant Mary Ann who means no offense to anyone
Dear Members: I have been trying to make a connection to my Craigs through this list, and I have been patient with all the brew-ha-ha and attack on a new member. HOWEVER, I have had enough. This latest post, about subject lines, has done me in. I no longer wish to be a part of a group that is this petty and nasty. Why can't some of you folks GROW UP!!!!! Unsubscribe, cancel, whatever you want to do, just GET ME OFF THIS LIST!!! Angry and disgusted, Pat Gordon Greener57@aol.com
The people seeking earlier generations for CRAIGs in Tennessee from about 1790 MAY be interested to know there several families of CRAIGs in southwestern Virginia (possibly related, but not so documented), the children of which largely moved on to/through Tennessee, if not Kentucky. Once in Tennessee, some stayed, but others pushed on further, to Alabama, Arkansas and Missouri. ONE of the CRAIG clusters was in Abingdon, Washington Co VA, where Robert CRAIG, formerly of Lancaster Co PA settled by 1787. (NOTE: There were at least THREE (3) Robert CRAIGs in the Abingdon area by that year! One moved on to KY by 1790-1972.) MY ancestor Robert CRAIG had a total of 15 children, by two wives. Several of the 15 at least passed through Tenn, from about 1800 on. The one with the biggest Tenn connection was his daug Mary, who m. William McLean BERRYHILL in 1808. He was by that date "from TN" and they settled in Columbia, county seat of Maury County. He was a merchant and judge there, but later moved into Nashville, and d. there in 1836. Other daughters married into SHUGART, MITCHELL, WATKINS, CLAPP, HAMILTON -- and one of those other CRAIG clusters! (The last was James Chambers CRAIG, whose father was Robert Chambers CRAIG -- "Robert CRAIG #3" and fought at Kings Mountain) The boys were: David, James Whitehill, Robert, William Denny (passed thr TN, d. in Ark) and John. Hope these names help someone.

I agree !!!!!! So what ever it takes get me off as well. Unsubscribe- I think is the word. Roy
Ladies & Gentlemen, If you wish to unsubscribe to the CRAIG list send a message to: CRAIG-L-request@rootsweb.com or CRAIG-D-request@rootsweb.com (whichever applies) Type Unsubscribe in the Subject line Send message. Regards, John
Thomas CRAIG the Colonel is well documented. You need to check the DAR Patriot index/indices, and maybe anything on distinguished Pennsylvanians of the Rev War. IIRC, Isaac served in both the Marines (!) and the "army" artillery, and after the War settled in greater Pittsburgh area, prob on bounty land. He is probably also in the DAR index. I have stumbled through info on these two, but do not have copies or cites because they weren't my direct line.
My interest is in two brothers named John and David CRAIG. The father of my well-documented ancestor Robert CRAIG (b. 1744, Lancaster Co PA; d. 1834 Washington Co VA) was named David. This David was b. 1712 and d. in Lancaster Co in 1759. By unproven family legend, this David CRAIG had a brother John, whose son John Jr. was a Captain of the 4th Contl Dragoons in the Rev War. My research has turned up a John (Sr.) who was declared dead in 1758, after being taken captive by Delaware Indians in 1756, and who did have a son John (Jr.). But I have no conclusive evidence that THIS John is my David's brother, or that he is the father of the Dragoon. (Same old story, too many CRAIGs with same first names bouncing around....) I had never before heard of a THIRD brother (the James II cited), of thier father (James I). Can you tell me any more that might "forge" some links? John Craig ANDREWS JCDrews@aol.com
Come on folks....oldsters and newbies CHANGE YOUR SUBJECT LINES......to at least reflect one name and area of the contents of the post. I'm trying deligently to remember and hope we can all do so. What have we NOT seen that was posted to this list...that we NEEDED...because the subject line was TOTALLY wrong. Mary Ann
