Cathy, This looks interesting - let's go see what we can find. I don't know if this will be any help but until today, I didn't know that Archibald had been a weaver but now I realize that the bunch of Craigs who blew into Franklin Co. IN a bit later - think it would have been around 1840 as well, must have all belonged to him - they were all well regarded weavers - obviously a family trade. Unfortunately, I don't have so much as a hint that my James Craig was a weaver and he was in Franklin Co., IN at least 6 years before Archibald shows up - too bad! Nevertheless, there appear to have been plenty of Craigs in Kilmarnock, Scotland and that alone makes it worth a looksee!<g> Gee - I wonder if there were any James Craigs there?<big joke> Teri -----Original Message----- From: Cathy Pinner <cjp@agn.net.au> To: CRAIG-L@rootsweb.com <CRAIG-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, June 29, 2000 6:40 PM Subject: Re: [CRAIG-L] Archibald Craig b 1793 Kilmarnock, Scotland > >I also have a James Craig (2 Feb 1804, Scotland - 25 Nov 1862, South >Australia) and I don't know whether he may be related to this Archibald >Craig though Archibald is a family name. Hello CRAIG cousins! I am looking for information on two men who married CRAIG sisters and were living in New Mexico in 1945. Here is what I know: J. T. MCDONALD and wife, of Clovis, NM Edward P. RIPLEY and wife, of Santa Fe, NM The CRAIG sisters might have been named Opal (who was previously married to a SHAFFER) or Stella, or Ester, or another sister b. 1911 whose name I don't know. The parents of the sisters are John Samuel CRAIG and Hattie LARKINS CRAIG of Missouri. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks so much. Anita Tally
I have acquired a fair amount of information regarding Archibald Craig m Agnes Gilchrist and although I cannot at this point (don't I just wish), tie into this line, I hate to see good information go to waste. My first thought was to post it all to the list, but it would be quite a lengthy post and therefore, instead, if anyone is working this line, I will be glad to give them what I have. In brief, Archibald & Agnes came to America with their two oldest children, Jane and James, about 1821 and spent about 7 years in the area of Charleston, SC after which they traveled to Franklin Co., IN where Archibald became the first regular minister of the Mt Carmel Presbyterian Church. During his life, Archibald was a muslim weaver as was his father and after arriving in SC, he taught school while he studied for the ministry. Children of Archibald Craig m Agnes Gilchrist in addition to Jane and James Craig include Nancy, William Dickenson and Janetta Craig according to his will recorded in 1844. The will of his wife, Agnes Gilchrist Craig recorded in 1887 includes additional names such as grandchildren. I also have a copy of an excerpt from a Franklin Co., IN history book which gives some detail regarding the family, including the information that Archibald Craig's name is engraved upon a monument at Kilmarnock along with five or six others who took part in the movement for social reforms. Apparently, he would have come to America sooner but he was imprisoned for his political activities. When his enemies learned that he had decided to go to America upon his release, they offered him the chance to go free with the condition that he go to America immediately but he refused, preferring to serve out his time, settle his business and then go to America as he planned. I sincerely wish that I could tie my James Craig to Archibald Craig (perhaps way back in Scotland?) but even if I can't, if someone has this line, I certainly would certainly be interested in hearing more about Archibald Craig. Teri

The Coxes moved into Grayson Co, and down New River into N. Carolina. I believe This is the family that links to the MONTGOMERY family that you are looking into. Ann MONTGOMERY dau. of John MONTGOMERY and Anne Agnes CROCKETT.m. John and Mary's son, James and they lived at Hans Meadow. The family members who didn't inherit vast amounts of land moved on. John CRAIG sent Joseph COLVILLE (son of Andrew COLVILLE and Mary CRAIG) to find land in KY and sued him when he didn't. In his will, John mentions land in KY near Simpson's Creek. Joseph COLVILLE and his wife Sarah LUSK moved to McMinnville, Blount, TN after he lived for a while in Green Co, KY, giving power of attorney to my ancestor, James CRAIG (who doesn't belong to anyone). Mary CRAIG COLVILLE dau of William CRAIG of PA mentions her father in her will in Wythe Co,VA. John CRAIG is about the same generation from PA. John CRAIG has a son, Hiram. James CRAIG has a son Hiram. Still can't find a link. Back to the original story. There are several groups of CRAIG's in Augusta Co, and I kept bumping into them. the common link is the marriage of John C. MONTGOMERY son of Sarah Jane COLVILLE and Robert MONTGOMERY and Elizabeth Christy CRAIG dau of David CRAIG and Margaret CARSON. David is the son of Robert CRAIG (of PA) and Margaret WHITEHILL. Hello Peggy, I, myself didn't look this up, but a close cousin of mine went looking yesterday and found this information, and related it to me by phone. So we were wondering who everyone was, and was trying to come up with different conclusions. So what you are telling me is that your William Craig was on the 1812 Tax list in Maury Co, TN. I see now where I made an error. All the people I listed were granted land. This was not a tax list. Are you telling me because William Craig was in Maury Co, TN that the William Craig that was granted land in Roane Co, TN in 1815 isn't the same William Craig? Janice Cook

Hello Janice and all, I have found out that the Thomas Craig who married Peggy (Margaret) Stonecipher in Roane County in 1809 is the Thomas CRaig born 1782 Ireland and came over here with his brother Robert Craig Jr. This Thomas Craig migrated thru the Carolinas into the TN and TN river area, possibly around Stewart and Humphreys County TN and into Fayette County IL where he is buried. He died abt. 1840 and is buried at Craig cemetery in Hurricane Twnshp in Fayette County IL. I have been researching this particular set of Craig's because a Asa Craig is also buried in the same cemetery in Fayette County IL and an unconfirmed report says that he is a brother to my Thomas Craig born 1806 TN in Stewart County TN. Their father is suppose to be a James Craig who married Susannah Cottingin in 1804 in Stewart County TN. The other brothers are suppose to be Charles Freeman Craig and Eli Greene Craig also born in TN. I was wondering if you might have run across any information on the Robert Craig Jr. who is the brother who came from Ireland with Thomas Craig who married Peggy Stonecipher. If you have any other info on this Thomas Craig, Peggy Stonecipher or Robert Craig Jr. would you please let me know. If anyone is interested in these Craig's I will be glad to share info with them. Thank you for your time. My grandfather was Amon Hale Craig, bornFebruay l5, l859 in Gainboro, Jackson County, Tn. He died in Braggs, Ok. Nov. l8, l923. His parents were William Craig and Sarah Craig and the l860 Census for Flynn's Lick, Jackso County,Tn. listed them with three boys, Thomas, l0, Nathan 4, and Amen 2. This was a misspelling of Amon's name. He apparently was married first to an Elizabeth McDonald and I know nothing about this marriage exept that there were three boys- John, born July 6, l879 and died June 24, l894; Ed, born November 30, l877; and Henry. Amon Hale Craig married my Grandmother Nancy Jane Ratliff about l890, but I have no date on this. They had Amon Hale Jr, born June 6, l895, Addie Starr born Aug. l5, l893, Clifford Cravens,(my father) bornl897 and Warren Reed, born Oct. 23, l899. I have a Tax Receipt showing Amon Hale in business in Braggs, Ok. in l895, and a Bill of Sale for a portion on his wif's Cherokee Indian Allotment in l906. Amon was written about in the book "Hell on the Border by S. H. Harmon. It contained a chapter "A Case of Circumstantial Evidence Against A. H. Craig. He owned a dry goods business in Braggs, Ok. at this time. He was acquitted of this charge. MyFather and his younger brother were named after the lawyers who represented him Would like to know of any information you might have on Elizabeth McDonald and that part of the family. I do know that Delilah Cookson was married to my Father's half brother, Edward. Any information would be appreciated.
