The Niblock/Niblack/Niblick researchers on their rootsweb group have been discussing the tombstone of William Niblock of Rowan Co., NC. As a result, everybody was sent copies of the photograph and immediately they mentioned the Knox tombstone in the background. Knox is a family I have just breezed past, but my sister had this to say: --- Did you notice the Knox tombstone behind the Niblock one? That Mary Knox looks like she is the daughter of John Knox 1708-1758 and his wife Jean Gracy 1708-1772. Both born in Scotland, transplanted to Ireland by King of England. His wife was an Irish Presbyterian and having seven sons in the Revolution, William, Samuel, James, Absalom, John, Joseph, Benjamin, AND A DAUGHTER MARY. The son James is the grandfather of President James Knox Polk. Jean Gracy was the daughter of Jean Sinclair, a relative of the mother of John Knox the Reformer. They came to America about 1740 settling on land that had been granted by Earl Granville to James Stewart. This history book also has quite an extensive description of a skirmish in Rowan Co. Feb. 1-3, 1781 which could very well be the one in which our James Craig was killed. I haven't looked up his death date this morning, but wasn't that when he was killed? Judy Driscoll - I looked up the death of our James Craig (the head of them all on Team #14) and he was killed Feb 1 1781 according to wife Rhoda Niblick Craig when she filed for compensation for herself as a widow and four children. It never mentioned a battle, so we Craig researchers have always guessed at it. Well, James lived in Long Canes, SC, but his son John went up to Rowan Co. and married Elizabeth Andrews, granddaughter of the William Niblock on the tombstone). So this leaves us with: Did James Craig possible come from Scotland with the Niblock family? His wife Rhoda was Elizabeth Andrews' aunt per an old, old family letter.

Teri, I also have a James Craig (2 Feb 1804, Scotland - 25 Nov 1862, South Australia) and I don't know whether he may be related to this Archibald Craig though Archibald is a family name. I'm still trying to definitely identify his family in Scotland. I am interested in families in and around Kilmarnock at this time because about 1840 a group emigrated from there and my James Craig seems to have been a part of it even though he married in Glasgow in 1829 and seems to have lived there after marriage. I'd like to know more of the group involved in social reforms in Kilmarnock. Here's what I know about my Craigs ... I'm still looking for a connection of ANY kind to other Craigs ... On May 6th, 1849, Alexander Craig and Ann Cunningham, both residing in Pollokshaws Burgher Church Parish, were registered for proclamation of Banns 3 days. The above parties were married at Pollokshows on May 22, 1849 by the Rev. James C. Maclaurin, Minister, Will Sewell, Session Clerk. (From the old parochial registers now in the custody of the Registrar General in Edinburgh). In 1851, Alexander Craig (head of household, aged 22, bleacher, born Eastwood, Renfrewshire) and Ann Craig (his wife, aged 25, powerloom weaver, born Paisley Renfrewshire) were living at 16 Harriet Street, Pollokshaws. I believe they had five children, all born in Scotland: William Cunningham Craig, born 20 Sep 1854, at 5 Queen Mary Street, christened 17 Dec 1854 James MacDougall Craig, born 14 Nov 1857 (or possibly 1851), d. 1922 North Andover, MA Elizabeth Craig, born 30 Mar 1859, at 37 Dale Street, Bridgeton, christened 1 June 1859 Ann Craig, born 29 Jan 1862, at 243 Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow, christened 13 Apr 1862 Alexander Craig, born 3 Dec 1864, at 9 Dunn Stret, Glasgow, christened 5 Feb 1865 Four of the christenings were recorded at the London Road United Presbyterian Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Alexander (father) was employed as a stoker, fireman, or porter at the time of the christenings. In 1881, Ann Craig, 56, housekeeper, was widowed and living at 3 Newhall Street, Barony, Lanark, Scotland, with daughter Elizabeth Craig, age 22, occupation Cotton Weaver, unmarried at the time of the 1881 census. In 1891, Ann Craig, head of house, widow, aged 65, housekeeper, born Paisley, Renfrewshire, Elizabeth (her daughter, unmarried, aged 32, weaver, born Glasgow), and Alexander (her son, aged 26, general labourer, unemployed) were living at 43 Adelphi Street in Bridgeton. James MacDougall Craig married Ellen Wilson (born 16 Jan 1860 Scotland, died April 13, 1938, Stafford Springs, CT) in Scotland and they came to the United States in 1880. One of his sisters (probably Ann) married Alexander Peacock in Scotland (I believe they had no children). She was in the United States (working at the Nevins Home in Methuen, MA) when her brother James MacDougall Craig died in 1922, but she went back to Scotland sometime later. When James MacDougall Craig died on 1922, his brother Alexander was still alive in Scotland. I'm the great-granddauther of James MacDougall Craig ... Anyone looking for me? Kay Gleason
Wanda, I have a James Craig born about the 1832. I seem to have a number of date estimates for this James. I show him as son of Jane Ferguson and James Craig, listed as their 18 year old son, occupation millwright, in the 1850 Toby Twp, Clarion Co, PA census. In 1860, James is again listed in Toby Twp, but living with his older brother William F. Craig. James age is listed at 25, occupation attorney at law. I also have records from another Craig genealogist listing James as being born Nov. 4, 1831, died Jan 31, 1900. I have no information on James's spouse, but quite a bit about his parents and siblings. If this sounds like a match, let me know if you are interested in more info. Nancy
Sorry, I am interested in John Craig who married Rachel LaRue in Wythe Co., Va around 1800. Their first child (together) was born in Wythe Co., Va in 1804 and they then moved to Kentucky. Where John came from is the question. I have heard both Pa and Md so I really can't be sure but he is my brickwall. As to my James', he was born in Ky amd is John's grandson and my grgrandfather. Thank you for the info.
