Hello cousins: I've been chasing my roots for about 2 years now. I been observing this list for sometime, and I want to thank you for an education. When we started two years ago we knew nothing of our ancestors in the Craig line beyond our great grandfather, Irvin John Craig. At this point we have our g4 grandfather, William Craig as born in in New Jersey per the 1850 census of Ayr township, Fulton county, PA. We have a strong reason to believe our g4 grandfather William was born to Thomas Craig b.1725 N. Ireland, son of Thomas Craig, Sr and Mary Truax b, 1727 Monmouth county, NJ, daughter of John Truax and Sytje Van Kirk. With his brothers John and Moses, Thomas Craig, Sr arrived from N. Ireland in 1730. Thomas Craig, Sr died prior to 1777. Thomas Craig b. 1725 migrated to Hunterdon county and later to Sussex county, NJ (Warren) where he was a land owner on both sides of the Delaware river in Sussex county, NJ (now Warren) and Bucks county,PA. Thomas died in 1785. The executor of his estate were his two oldest sons, Robert and James. The other three sons named his his will were David, John, and William called "Billey". Six daughters, Mary Van Hook, Elizabeth McIlhenny, Sarah, Hannah McFall, Susannah, Martha. Some believe Thomas Craig b. 1725 may have had a son Thomas who was not named in his will because he retained soul interest in the fore mentioned land. William was an infant at the time of Thomas' death. The will directed his executors to look over them ( John and William). The infant William, we propose is our g4 grandfather. If anyone has information helping us to confirm this would be greatly appreciated. Other information that may be helpful, William witnessed his brother Robert's will executed in 1805 in Sussex county. Robert died in 1812. William arrived in Bedford (now Fulton) county, PA between 1805 and 1811. His first son William was born in 1811.
Open reply to Sharon .... We have a James Craig and the reason there may be a possible link is the fact that this part of our Craig line moved to Indiana then Illinois and when the father died they scattered. The son Lindsey/Lindsay went back to KY ... others went farther west.... we do not know where James ended up. Look at the Fathers name ... William .... then look at what Lindsey named a son ... William H..... and some of the other family names also show up ..... gdc *** Family Group Record ============================================================================ ============== Husband: William Craig ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- Birth: 1787 Rockbridge County, Virginia Death: 1832 Paris, Edgar County, IL Burial: Marriage: 4 Apr 1805 Jessamine County Father: John W. Does anyone have a Malinda Craig b 1869 in MO. Her father was John Craig who died in Holt County MO in 1931. Malinda Craig married Ira Cook 1886. Ira and Malinda had three sons in Kansas probably Brown County: John David, Samuel Mortica and William. Malinda died 1894 in Richardson County NE. She was burried in Brown County Kansas as "Sister Malinda Cook" Does anyone know this family or have Craig family that lived in Brown County Kansas or Richardson County Nebraska? Paula
I'd tend to agree with Rhonda. It sounds like a tale to cover Toliver's (alleged) illegitimacy. Then there is the stork and cabbage patch version. Ron Gollberg, Asheville.
It does sound like a story told to children and I think it's very sweet if probably not historically accurate. I enjoy the old stories told on the porch part of genealogy as much as finding that critical document of proof. Mary Ellen
The stories in Rose and Bryan's "Pioneers of Missouri" were basically taken from area settlers while "visiting on their front porch". In other words, there is nothing proven about the family story. The only information that was usually correct was the listing of the current family, who they married, where they lived and where they had moved from. I got some dirty looks in the library when I read this Toliver story because I was laughing too loud. One theory was the story was spun to cover Toliver's illegitimacy. Rhonda

Don't think so Mainly Wales and Scotland.
For all those who expressed an interest in hearing the story I read in "Pioneer Families of Missouri" here goes word for word. CRAIG - One day, a great many years ago, as a ship was sailing frim an Irish port to America, a sailor named Toliver Craig fell overboard and was drowned. The next morning a boy baby was found on the deck of the vessel, with no one to claim him or take care of him. The ship was loaded with emigrants, among whom were his parents, who doubtless felt too poor to assume the care of the little fellow in the new country to which they weret going;so they took that method of throwing him upon the charities of the ship's crew. After some consultation it was decided to name the little waif for the lost sailor, and he was accordingly christened Toliver Craig.Ge grew to be a man, married, and had a son, whom he also named Toliver. The latter also grew to man's estate, married and and had a son whom he named Toliver, Jr. The latter maried Elizabeth Johnson of Virginia and removed to Scott County Ky during the early settlement of that state. The Indians were very hostile at the time and they lived three years in a fort. They had seven children-Jack, Elijah,William, Nathaniel,Mary,Nancy and Toliver.Jack, Elijah,William and Nancy married and lived in Tennessee. Nathaniel married Polly Ealey and lived in Ky. They had-William, Nancy, Martha, Robert, Ann and Mary all of whom settled in Missouri. Toliver married Patsey Wright an English lady, by whom he had Elizabeth, Poilly, Larkin, Permelia..................................... I stopped copying at this point as I was only interested in the Toliver Craig falling overboard. Do you all think this is yet another story of Tolliver and his supposed illigitimacy or some other Craig altogether? Kathy Hall
Hi Jessy, Unfortunately, I do not have any other info on Leonard and Phoebe CRAIG. I was fortunate to find them. James Wesley CRAIG is my ggrandfather. I knew all his siblings so I just looked for parents with those kids. I had to searched thru all the Tenn. 1860 census books till I found them with their children. I found others with a couple of the children but their ages did not match up. This was the only couple that had the right children and the ages matched. I found them in Overton Co., Tn. in 1860 and White Co., Tn. in 1850. They were in Wayne Co., Mo. in 1870 thru 1920. That is about all I know about Leonard and Phoebe CRAIG. That is one reason I put them on the CRAIG List hoping someone might have a connection.
