"Hello again Cousins!" I am now officially retired, and am looking forward to being able to hit the road in search of family. I am quite confident that my planned activities will necessitate my turning the administration of the several Rootsweb mail lists and GenConnect Boards that I presently administer, over to someone else. Am sincerely wondering if one of you might seriously wish to accept the responsibility of becoming the Board Administrator for the CRAIG GenConnect Boards? Should you be so inclined, please do apprise me of your willingness to do so at your earliest convenience. Thank you so very much for your patience, cooperation, and participation in the CRAIG GenConnect Boards! TTYL Craig "Always looking for Cousins!"
If this is a hit for anyone I will be glad to scan in the picture of David S. Craig and send it along to you .... gdc While writing a few paragraphs about my mother's line I remembered there were Craigs mentioned in it and that it might be of interest to anyone searching out Ohio Craigs. The article references Washington (Courthouse) School. The little town was once called only Washington, Ohio and then it became (and remains) Washington Courthouse, Ohio. It is located in Southeast of Xenia, Ohio and Northeast of Cincinnati. The school yearbook is for the year 1913. Mentioned in the yearbook is David S. Craig (HS Superintendent), Paul Craig (who wrote the Sophomore Class history), Robert Craig and Paul Craig are pictured in the male glee club, Robert/Bob Craig (a freshman, is mentioned as a member of the football team), An advertisement in the back of "The Owl" has an ad for "Craig Bros" Department Store which was established in 1874 (there are 2 pictures of the store) Mclain High School June 29, 2000 Times-Gazette - Highland County, Hillsboro An article appeared on the front page regarding a historical marker to be place at McClain High School located in Greenfield. Kathleen Fuller, the Greenfield editor for the Gazette, wrote the article. I found this a very interesting happenstance and although little was mentioned of the content (yet to be approved) of the marker. I was in the area researching McClain ancestors and just stumbled across the school that was named for a well-known educator and administrator of the area. What made this even more interesting was the fact that I had just found a copy of the first Washington High School Yearbook dated 1913 in which a picture of the school superintendent, William McClain appeared. On the same page, a picture of David S. Craig, president of the school board also appeared. Though I am sure that this particular Craig is not of our line, I found it interesting that a Craig was president of the school board for the same school that my mothers relative, William McClain, served as superintendent. There is a book you can oder about the Robinson and Craig family in Waxhaw of South Carolina. It is a very good book written by Eloise Craig. She is dead now but a couple of cousins who helped her compile it are still living in there 90s in Lancaster Co., SC. I'm descended from Roderick, and thanks to other descendants help, I've managed to build a sizable database of Roderick and his descendants. I've walked lots of local cemeteries gathering info from stones, spent lots of time researching at local libraries, gotten legal documents from various local government centers, etc., so I'm reasonably certain that my info is reliable, although there is always the possibility of error. If you'd like to tell me which of Roderick's sons you're descended from (don't have daughters, unfortunately) I can try to narrow down my 100+ pages of Craig history for you. Hello Dot, I dont have any dates as yet. the lineage I posted is pretty much all I have. The Order could be correct although I have found errors on the hand copied text. She was born after 1900 and I am assuming around Muscogee Oklahoma. Cookson Hills, Adair county or Craig county. The Grand Lake area with surrounding towns of Vinita, Claremore, Langley, Fort Smith or possibly Arkansas. The list was copied at Talequah Ok, Cherokee Indian archives, on Our family. I do have further Information going back earlier in the Grant line to the 1400s. and also details on Amon Hale Craig who was a General Store owner in Muscogee, he was Charged with, and later aquitted of Murder. Delilah (Cookson) Craig was Amon Hale Craigs Wife and a Very respected Midwife In that area. Her father was Thomas Cookson. I show him marrying a Sallie Collier but my handwritten line has a Sallie Bullock . I am Trying to piece this puzzle together. Any help will be appreciated. Bobby Bobby
My families Cherokee Blood lineage: Our earliest traceable ancestor so far is Ludovic Grant Born 1698 in Scotland, and died 1755, in Charleston South Carolina . Ludovic Grant was the Clan Chief of the Grant (also spelled Graunt) holdings in Scotland. After losing the the war in the Jacobite Rebellion,he was captured by the British and banished to the "New World". Ludovic arrived on the Savannah in the Carolinas and moved in with the Cherokees, his cousins all went to Boston and the Carribean. According to the Sir Alexander Cuming Journal of 1731, he with the aid of Ludovic Grant , convinced seven young Cherokees (Including future Chief Attakullakulla,The Little Carpenter) to visit England, and King George II. It was an attempt by the King to recruit the Cherokees to fight the French. In a statement recorded on page 301 of the Charlestown, South Carolina Probate Court , in the book of "1754-1758", in a sworn statement of January 12,1756, says"It is about 30 years since I went into the Cherokee Country where I have resided ever since, I speak their language". According to the Emmet Starr Journal of 1726, Ludovic Grant married an unknown woman of the Wolf Clan as his second wife. Ludovic Grant: Blood: Scottish. Christened April 12, 1702 Irvine Scotland. Emigrated (1) May 07,1716 from Scotland to the "New World". Emigrated (2) 1726, To the Cherokee Nation as an Indian Trader. Note: "Indian Countryman" of Cheoah. Occupation Fur Trader. (Starr notes B657) Child of Ludovic Grant and the unknown Cherokee woman was: Mary grant, born 1727, Cherokee Nation East,Tennesee, died unknown in Cherokee nation East, Tennesee Mary grant married William Emory born 1720 in England died unknown in Cherokee Nation East, Tennesee. Child of Elizabeth Emory and John Rogers Sr. Was one of Four: Charles Rogers born 1774 died unknown Charles Rogers married Rachel Hughes born 1790 died after 1851 Note: Rachel Hughes is descended from a long line of famous Cherokees. Including NANYE-HI FIVEKILLER also known as Nancy Ward. Born 1738 in Chota, City of Refuge, North Carolina Cherokee Nation, now Tennesee. She died in Womankiller Ford, Cherokee Nation (now Polk County Tennesee) There was a tremendous amount of information written about Nancy ward. She is mentioned in Teddy Roosevelt's Book On The West, the Virginia State Papers, the South Carolina State Papers, In Mooneys Book and The Draper Collection. There is a chapter of the American Daughters Of The Revolution name after her in Tennesee and there is a Descendants of Nancy Ward Association in Oklahoma. As a child she was called "Wild Rose". She was later called Nanye`hi. This means; One who is with the Nunnehi (Spirit People) .After being lost and having a vision of the Nunnehi helping her through the night. In 1755 she was given the title "Ghi hau" or Beloved Woman, for her heriocs in battle. During the batle of Taliwa against the creeks, she was chewing the bullets her husband Kingfisher was using. He was shot and killed . She picked up his rifle and joined the battle. Still in her teens and the widowed mother of two children, when vaulted into the high office of Chieftainess. They were marching West, and the Unaka (white) soldiers were behind them. They left behind a trail of corpses-the weak the sick who could not survive the journey". This drean proved to be Prophetic. On December 29, 1835, thirteen years after her death, a "Removal Treaty" was signed. the Cherokee called this journey the "Yunna-Da-Ult-Sun-Yi " The Trail Where They Cried. The Trail Of Tears. Is Team 2 where I would find Robert Craig with wife Katie (Catherine) and children John, James, Thomas, James and Robert. With Robert (1) dying on the ship from Antrim and Robert (2) being born on same ship? I haven't been able to make heads or tails from some of the stuff that is on the Teams.
