Fortunately the Delaware have kept their own records, and have a considerable archive. The only problem is, I need the parents of these three ladies to confirm who they are and so far, I can't find anything. I spoke at length with a tribal representative, who told me that if I can find any other clues about these three women, he should be able to give me the rest - he just needs a few clues about them. According to the tribal office, very indepth records were kept until the tribe left Anderson and even during their time in Missouri. However, when the move to OK took place, a lot of those records were indeed lost. They have been able, through the generations of elders since then, to reconstruct a vast number of them. I can provide the address and phone number for the tribal office, or give their URL, if anyone is interested. * Charlotte wrote: > I think, but I'm not sure, that the Delware records are included with the Cherokee records...i.e. there should be Dawes roll numbers for them...that Dawes Commission covered a lot of tribes and a lot of area, including the Souix in SD as well... > > Some say that Nancy Ward's father was a Delaware Chief but Emmet Starr's book and it's been awhile since I've looked at that book, I don't believe says that...or that might be where I got that...when you get prior to the 1750s in Indian Genealogy it gets real murky...because most of the history etc was oral passed down from family to family...what I've noticed is that the records come from their contact with the whites...and not all Indian's enrolled...so there is no record even on the Dawes Rolls... > > Charlotte > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Dale K. Charlotte, You are a member of the Craig List. Are you a Craig? If so I would be interested in finding out how your "Craig family" interconnects with This Cherokee line. Bobby
My great great grandmother, Margaret Anderson was reputed to be a granddaughter of Chief Anderson of the Delaware Tribe, Turtle Clan. She married David Craig (b. 1852), son of Daniel Craig and Elizabeth Mogle. I'm also told Elizabeth was a Delaware . . . The daughter of David & Margaret, Clara, married Simeon Clem, who was the son of John W. Clem and M. J. I'm told that M. J. was also a Delaware Indian, and that the initials were for her tribal name. I can't confirm anything on Margaret, Elizabeth, or M.J. Anyone else have any of these people in their lines? The Delaware Tribe is connected to the Cherokee, although they have been fighting in court to "declare their independance" for the last few years. I'd love to clear this up and find out for sure if the family stories passed down through the generations are based in fact or fiction. Can you help me? Donna (Clem) Arthur
I think, but I'm not sure, that the Delware records are included with the Cherokee records...i.e. there should be Dawes roll numbers for them...that Dawes Commission covered a lot of tribes and a lot of area, including the Souix in SD as well... Might you be connected with Granville Craig, for whom Craig County OK was named, he lived and is buried in the Welch OK area... I'd have to look but I don't think Samuel and Eliza Craig had any other male children that had issue...it's been awhile since I've checked this line...but there was a William Craig who was their son, but in Penelope's Dawes papers she says he died without issue...this line, came via the Trail of Tears, but shortly after moving to OK because of the Ross/Ridge controversy, moved to Johnson County, MO where Samuel Craig had a brother Robert Burns Craig, it was after Eliza Harlan Craig and her husband Samuel Craig died that their children then went back to the Indian Territory in OK mid to late 1800s....and they remained there....so descendants there today... With the roll numbers that you have ...Have you tried sending to the Nation Archive in Texas for the Dawes Packets...a wealth of info in those...I found most of the info was in Penelope Craig's application and then her sister Louisa Craig, my ggggrandmother, was admitted based on the info in Penelope's application as, admitted sister of #______ ...so when searching these records, also check family member applications they may be the one that supplied the info and then the other family members are admitted referenced to that person... Nancy Ward is my line...through her daugher Catherine, whoses father was Kingfisher....Tame Doe was Nancy Ward's mother and it is believed that Tame Doe's father was Moytoy, Attacullculla was the brother of Tame Doe and the father of Dragging Canoe...Nancy Ward was from the Wolf Clan, she is buried in Benton, Polk County, TN and has a chapter of DAR named after her in Chatanooga TN (I know I've spelled that wrong..<g>.) You can see information about Nancy at: http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar Not all the connections there before Nancy are correct...some of the children of Moytoy....I was concerned about preserving the information that I was finding in some old history books I was reading...with the thought of sorting it out later...which of course has not yet come... There is also a web site where they are putting her info on the web at: http://www.nancyward.com It also seems to me that one of Catherine's children married a Huges...that name sounds familiar to me at any rate.... Robert Fulton Craig was a first cousin of my father, because Robert's mother and my father's mother were sisters (Prestwoods). They were distant Craig cousins. There are other Craigs in Gaston County who descend from the Craigs that came in through Charleston, SC and settle in southern Gaston Co., NC and northern York Co., SC. We have not made connection with them. If you have access to the Gaston County Census for 1910 and 1920, you should find my father, Albert Filmore Craig listed with his mother in 1910 and with my mother and my older brother and sister in 1920. I have a partial listing of the descendants of William Craig and I am waitning for Barbara Ann Massey Horsman to get her book published, which will give a more complete list of the Caldwell County (NC) Craigs. I have not seen it necessary to plow the same ground again since she was much farther along in her research. This partial listing is about 50 pages of a Descendant tree for William from my Family Tree Maker database on Caldwell County Craigs. If you can be of help in moving us from the Orphan Craigs list, it will be appreciated. Allan F. Craig Mount Holly, NC

Perhaps this is one of John Craig's of Altoona, Wisconsin (1830 Ireland -- circa 1900; he had four children. He would be my great great great uncle. His brother William Craig is my link to Ireland, emigrating with family in 1847-48. We are not related to any of the Craigs-- except very distantly through the original emigration of Craigs out of Scotland to N. Ireland during plantation times (1600s) -- that came earlier into the South (1700s)-- NC, SC, VA, TN, KY etc. Perhaps this Midwest connection will pan out. It is worth noting that William and John did not get along. It is also likely that their father Francis Craig of Antrim (dying in Cork in 1847) may have had strife with his wife Nancy or Mary Ann McQuillen Craig. Craigs in Dunloy, Antrim tended to be Presbyterian (but some changed usually related to marriages) and Nancy was staunchly Catholic. One story is that their marriage was to solidify land holdings between Craigs and Nancy's brother or uncle or cousin. Also, the Presb. and Catholic farmers sometimes united against the Church of Ireland forces, as well as British rule of that troubled land. I say this, because it is not too likely that Nancy McQuillan would have had a strong relationship with her Craig in-laws; less likely to emigrate with them, or hook up in the states, if relatives should have emigrated also. Good luck to us both. Marybeth Shea College Park, MD 20740 (I have posted this to the Craig archives.) Unfortunately, the one who posted no longer has same address (mcraig.at.csomstudent@csom.umn.edu). In that post, birth was 1873 in Fayette County OH and she died in Oklahoma in 1966. Following that info, I plugged in the first name Maude with b 1873 and d 1966, and SSDI showed a Maude Keeth. Again, a name I haven't seen before. Was looking for a possible second marriage to ?Groh. If any of these names are familiar, or anyone knows one who posted message in 1997, I would love to connect and correspond. Edie

Do you think your Craig may have come from Wisconsin? My Craigs-- brothers William and John --emigrated Ireland with Mother Nancy? McQuillan Craig (Dunloy, Finvoy, County Antrim) circa 1847 -- first came to Portage and later Eu Claire, WI. William went on to Missouri (Cameron, near St. Joe) and later to Davison/Aurora Counties in South Dakota, circa 1885). John stayed in Wisconsin. Try with McHenry's in Abington, VA then to Wayne Co, KY. There was a John McHenry in late 1700's and early 1800's with lots of children. Some went into KY - others may be elsewhere. W.VA. who knows?
My great-grandfather was John Craig (1864-1935) who was born in the Parkersburg, West Virginia, area and married Lillie Alice McHenry (1861-1915). At some time the migrated with their children to Whetsell Settlement in Preston County, West Virginia, They had sons John Thomas (my grandfather), Karl L., and Lincoln, and daughter Rhoda. This is the sum total of what we know about the family.
