Judy, you are wonderful. Ron Gollberg
Once again we have seen the peaceful Transition of Power take place here in the United States of America. This is a time, for those of us seeking our ancestral roots in this great nation, to reflect on the sacrifices our ancestors made to make all of this possible. The living reality of our ancestors was called before me today when our new President George W Bush, in his inagural speech, quoted an ancestor of my Cato Family, John Page, writing to Thomas Jefferson. I have to admit to you Craig Cousins......I was so moved, the hairs on the back of my neck rose and then I was reduced to tears. I felt our ancestors blood stir in my veins.....and I am so grateful to them for the gift of this wonderful country that they built for us. "Know ye not that an angel rides this whirlwind, and in the storm guides us all" God bless America.......Judy *********************************************************** cato@primary.net ***********************************************************

Most records = show 1785 making=20 him 20 when he married (1805). I have seen no proof of his birth in = Amherst,=20 Virginia in the records passed on to me. Death: See Will for William indicating probate in 1832 General(1,2): Shortly after they were married they moved to Putnam = County, Indiana where we=20 also find the Dorrells. However, William and Peggy moved on to Paris, = Edgar=20 County, Illinois where they prospered. Upon Williams death the family = seemed to=20 split and go in many directions, some staying in Illinois, others = heading west=20 and some returning to their prior home in Kentucky. It is significant = that=20 Lindsay returned to Kentucky, because his is one of the forefathers of = our line=20 and his later marriage to Mary Jane Robertson is a key element the way = our=20 family history plays out. WIFE NOTES: Peggy Walters/Waters General: There is an Elizabeth (often shortened to Peggy) Waters shown = as the wife of=20 William's Uncle Frederick Huffman Jr. In those days there was a habit of = marrying into the same families. We think they were of the same family. = However,=20 Peggy's name sometimes appears as both Waters and Walters. Some of the = records=20 will clearly state the name as Walters only to then carry a notation to = "also=20 see Waters". We tend toward Walters as it is used in the majority of = related=20 Mercer County documents. Also, relating to Peggy Walters Craig, there is a reference to a Mary = Dorrell in=20 a deed filed in Anderson County the 28th of October, 1847. This is the = daughter=20 of Peggy and William, Mary/Polly Craig Dorrell. She shows up later in = Putnam=20 County, Indiana married to a William Dorrell. CHILD NOTES: Frederick Craig Death: When John Craig's property was divided into 3 parts, William's = third was further=20 divided among his 7 heirs since he had preceeded John in death. It was = divided=20 into 7 10 acre lots as follows: 1. to the heirs of his deceased son John Craig 2. to George Robertson, husband of Mariah Jane, daughter of William 3. to William Dorrel (Dorell), husband of Mary/Polly, daughter of = William. 4. to Lindsey Craig, son of William 5. to Daniel T. Craig, son of William 6. to Wesley, son of William 7. to the heirs of Frank Craig, son (although not stated we must assume = Frank=20 was the deceased son Frederick ... "Frank" must of been what his second = son=20 Frederick was commonly called) General: It appears that Frederick (AKA Frank) went to Putnam County, = Indiana to=20 homestead land in that area. The others returned to the Woodford, = Anderson=20 County area while Frederick remained. He is thought to have died between = 1845=20 and 1847. CHILD NOTES: John Craig CHILD NOTES: Westley Craig CHILD NOTES: Mary/Polly Craig Living(3): Mary was found along with husband William Dorrell to be = living in Indiana,=20 Cloverdale Township, possibly Putnam County (Hard to make out the = county). They=20 showed up on the Census of 1850 with 9 children living with them. The = census=20 record was found by Thomas McNinch. They both appeared to be in their=20 mid-forties, she being maybe 46 and he being maybe 43. General: Mary's husband William Dorrell bought land in Putnam County, = Indiana on July 26,=20 1833. He and Mary were living there and returned to claim their part of = the=20 inheritence from her father, Lindsey. The 1830 census in Indiana shows = William=20 H. Craig listed at page 241 in Morgan County and John Craig listed at = page 240.=20 There is a William Craig also listed at Pages 204 and 225, and a John = Craig at=20 225. The current thinking is that some of the family moved up into that = area as=20 part of the new Northwest Territoryg land grab. Possible scenario (from Dana) After the death of Frederick Huffman in = 1804 and=20 before 1810 a group of our Craigs
Gary, Thank you for the info that you sent. Since sending my message to the list, I have since found out a bit more information. Eliza's father was James Thomas Craig born in Georgia. Eliza had 6 siblings, and all were born in Arkansas, except for 1 or 2 which were b. in Texas. Her mother was Elizabeth Frances Tyler. Krealyn ... I noticed the name Puryear to which I have a Craig connection....A Randolph Rice m Ruth Puryear and their daughter, Mary W. Rice married Frederick Craig Sr. son of John W. John Rice Craig m Lucinda Wheat and had Mary, John H. And James ... Frederick was born about 1796 and Mary about 1800 .. they were married in Lancaster, Garrard County, KY ..... Mary W. Gary, sorry to take so long to respond, i'm just getting a chance to look at transcript. it is handwritten 34 pages, upwards of some 2,000 people and not always easy to locate some sunames. So far I have one "Stewart" family. of which give me a lil while to type for you and also look for any others. As far as the "Craig" name all I have is Mary. That's why I need help with it so badly, she is apparently origionally from either TN, NC, VA, or a variety of other possibilities. estimated birth of about 1755? What other associated surnames do you have for the area in Iowa? that would help me to see if there is any connection. Cathleen S, Gudino
Gary I know I have "spoken" to you before. I am linked to a James and Rebecca HILL CRAIG of Green Co, KY and Johnson County, IN. Let me see. James is linked somehow to John and Mary (Molly) COX CRAIG of Lancaster Co, PA and Montgomery Co, VA and Wythe Co, VA somehow by the marriage of Idress CRAIG and James Staats (Stotts) James and his son Robert travelled with James' sons Hiram T. and John CRAIG to Stotts Creek, Johnson Co, INDIANA in 1819. James is linked somehow to Joseph COLVILLE of Washington Co, VA and Blount County, TN by at least two deeds, one giving James power of attorney over Joseph's land in Green Co KY when he moved to TN. John CRAIG of Wythe Co. VA sued Joseph COLVILLE for NOT finding him land in KY. John later deeded land on Simpson's Creek (found on a map in Green Co) to his son, James (not my James ). James is buried on Cecil Simpson's farm in Johnson County, IN. Joseph COLVILLE's parents Andrew COLVILLE and Mary CRAIG COLVILLE retire in Wythe Co, VA. Mary lists her father as William CRAIG of Lancaster Co, PA. Also traveling with James's sons to IN is Nimrod STONE (and sons) who is from Fauquier Co, VA. He moved to Mercer Co, KY. It is said his wife Sarah is a CRAIG who first married a RUSSELL. This is unclear to me as a Russell signed consent on the marriage bond for Nimrod and Sarah. John CRAIG m. Nancy Caulk in Green co, KY, and her uncle, Jacob CAULK m. Abigail PATTERSON in Rockbridge Co, VA. The Caulks also married into the RICE, BENNINGFIELD, and PURYEAR families in Green Co, KY James's children married into the ROBINSON, SHIVELY, FARMER, PARROTT, JACOBS, WATTS, AND WOLLARD families. James m. Rebecca HILL in 1793 in Clark Co, KY In JUN 1794, Agnes CRAIG m. Thomas NEWTON. She may be linked to Robert CRAIG also living in Green Co, KY. whose dau. m. Ambrose SHIPP. I haven't found a link to this family yet, but it is related to William Daniel CRAIG and Elizabeth NICKLES. I find your Craigs in 1860 Johnson Co, IN: Frederick B. Craig 34 M Ky Farmer $150 416/416 p.446 Cynthia A. 24 F In Ira H. 8/12 M In John R. Craig 36 M Ky Farmer $300 380/380 p.441 Lucinda 30 F Ky Mary E. 10 F Ky John H. 5 M In James 3 M In James Craig 30 M Ky Farmer $300 381/381 P.441 Nancy 29 F Ky Mary H. 8 F Ky John W. 2 M In Also, I find: Frederick Craig 56 M Ky Farmer 830/830 with LOWE family p.504 Then, in Keokuk IA where James' sons Joseph, James and dau Parthena (VIDITO/VETTETOE), and Permelia(JACOBS) moved, I find: Austin Jacobs 46 M KY Pg.267 House 621 Family 631 Farmer Fredric Craig 53 M VA School Teacher Prior to this, I don't find the name Fredrick in my family. My Craigs are from Antrim also, and from about the same timeframe. Associate names in Ireland are McQuillan and Dinsmore. Locations are Dunloy in Finvoy parish, and either Caldenagh or Galdanagh. Family is mixed catholic and protestant in many generations - trying to hold onto land, I would say. Some of them were of means. My gr.gr grandfather William Craig new Portrush as a location, and knew how fair his home was from the port.
