    2. Sometimes, because it's Yahoo--you have to type it exactly--it's case sensitive at times-try that. I had a lot of trouble when I typed everything in lower case--when I complained to Yahoo about the sites at geocities not opening--they told me about it being case sensitive--after that I had no problem. If that's not your problem opening the page- sorry Jack Jines (Site Links Clickable): (Craig Family) <A HREF="www.geocities.com/Heartland/Orchard/9287/index.html"> http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Orchard/9287/index.html</A> (C/1/11th) <A HREF="www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cliffs/4954/index.html"> http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cliffs/4954/index.html</A> (SUHI) <A HREF="www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Pond/8499/index.html"> http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Pond/8499/index.html</A>

    3. Hi Ruth, I am one who is seeking a man named Craig who was supposedly born on a reservation in TN and was a full blooded Cherokee. His daughter was the mother of my second wife's husband. She was Lillian Marie Craig born April 10, 1898 in Knoxville, TN. What is the name of the book by John Ross? Any idea how I can find this Criag whose given name I do not know? I guess I should seek a birth certificate from Knoxville, eh? Ken Wiltz in CA.

Noting some comments on the election and avoiding same... Here is a brief synopsis of our Craig Family's impact on our election process: As you know, most of our Craig ancestors that arrived before or during the Revolutionary War arrived in indentured or bonded service. Many served masters contracted directly in the British Isles others had their servitude auctioned off after they arrived. In any case, they became the chattel property of the holder of their indenture. They could be whipped or jailed for cause and the women were often forced to submit to the owner of their indenture. Children were abused in many terrible ways. This was fully permitted under the colonial laws of the Crown. Most of those under indenture were Scots forced from their land and threatened with prison if they remained, Irish that were treated likewise and English who were being cleaned of the streets of London and charged as debtors or other undesirables. Many think that only Australia was used as a dumping ground for people the gentry wanted to get rid of for various reasons. The truth is, many of our ancestors who arrived here had been charged with imaginary crimes in order to exploit their lands and property. Canada and the United States were also a destination for our exploited ancestors charged as criminals or otherwise under threat by the Crown and exploitive gentry. These were the people who became the farmers and pioneers stock of our country. The two most famous Generals of the Crown stated in their memoirs that the reason for their defeat was not Washington or the American Army, they scoffed at them. They stated clearly that the farmer with the rifle hanging from the plow handle was the reason they were beaten. These previously indentured folk had slaved through their indenture or escaped, to become landowner, (Freeholders) and would never again submit to the tyrants of the Crown. The militia made of these staunch revolutionaries was the primary reason we are free today. Craigs made up a fair part of this revolutionary group. We owe our freedom to them and their kind. In reality, Jefferson, Washington and their peers were the new gentry in this young land and wanted make sure that all the Freeholders would back the new government. For that reason, the original Articles of Confederation and later the Constitution, guaranteed that all Freeholders (and only they) had the right to vote. This right to vote was seen by Jefferson, Adams and others of the more privileged gentry that were of course included as Freeholders, as a great risk. After all, the majority of the Freeholders were ignorant and could not really be trusted to vote for the right person for president. Those concerned worked out a great solution for the problem. This was a Republic and not a democracy for that very reason.... the rank and file of the voters could not be trusted to anything more than vote for a representative from their area who was then only obligated to vote as he might choose and not as the constituency wanted. In order to solve the problem of selecting a president the Electoral College was established. It was ingenious. All Freeholders could vote but they only elected a states electors. Of course these electors knew more than those that voted for them (they were appointed from a knowledgeable and informed ... read that "more intelligent" group). This allowed a president to be elected that was the most appropriate .. in the view of the power structure. These people never believed in or wanted this country to be a democracy, but rather a platonic Republic. We have the Electoral Collage because it was a way to keep the masses believing they had a say in the election, while in truth it was originally a way to maintain a tight control of the process. By accident, as we grew from 13 states to 50... It now permits the under-populated states from being controlled by the wishes of a handful of states like NY & Cal. .... but be aware, that result was only an accident. So ... remember, our citizen solders, those Craig Freeholders and others never wanted a strong central government, not even a strong state government ... they wanted it as close to them as possible because they had learned to despise ( and many died because of ) a prior strong central government ... Despite what the Constitution appeared to provide ... always be aware that it creators only intended it to apply to their definition of EVERY MAN and they thought they had it under control by the forming a Republic and then controlling presidential elections. What we have today is a result of CHANGES in interpretation and rejection of their interpretation of WHO COUNTS. Thanks to our Craig Ancestors and others like them for demanding their personal freedom and continuing to reject the CROWN throughout the years of our country's development. 3. RIGHT ANSWER - I fully agree. In every state, there are ballots that do not get counted because of double votes or failure to actually vote, or even don't have a candidate they want for that office so they don't vote for anyone for that office. I don't care what party someone is - when votes are counted and then recounted, and there is no malfunction of the machine . . . continuing to count using unexplained and unidentified criteria is not part of democracy. This is not the first election decided by electoral college instead of popular vote . . . history continues to repeat itself. There are people in the polls from opening to closing who are there to help if you can't read the ballot, don't understand the ballot, or whatever. All a person has to do is ask. 1. RE: [CRAIG-L] William CRAIG b. Northern Ireland
    2. Marybeth Shea
    3. Dear Sandra Tracy, I have occasionally posted my Craig information, and your listing is the first that fits the time frame-famine era emigration-- and location-Antrim, N. Ireland -- for my Craigs. Here is what I know: John or Francis Craig- John Francis or Frances John? was said to be the only child of a Mr. Craig and a Matilda, unknown maiden name. Matilda was later referred to as Matilda Dinsmore of Galdanagh (Caldenagh?). Perhaps she remarried. She later appears as a "Widow Dinsmore" in an Antrim document. The location fits with Dunloy (Townland) and Finvoy (Parish) and Kilconway (Barony) associate with my Craigs. The Kilconway Barony is between Ballymoney and Ballymena. Francis Craig her son, married Nancy (Mary Ann?) McQuillan, circa 1830. Nancy was born in Dunloy, circa 1810. Nancy and Francis married and had these children: (some documented by baptism in Dunloy, Finvoy, Antrim) John Craig ... married Mary Hogan William Craig.. married Sarah Doyle, William born circa 1837 Sarah Craig Dynes.. married Robert Dynes Matilda Craig married ???? Ann A. Craig Robertson.. married David Arthur Robertson Mary Craig Carey... married Martin Carey These marriages all took place after 1850 in WISCONSIN. Nancy emigrated with the children after Francis died. He was said to have been older than her. They lived in Antrim, but Francis died in Cork circa 1847 while attending a funeral. There is some mixed Catholic and Presbyterian practice in this generation, although nearly all the children and grandchildren were strong practicing R.C. John, although married to a Catholic, was documented as active in a Presby. Church, although he was died as a Catholic, and buried with his mother Nancy in a Catholic cemetery near Eau Claire, WI. As you know, most Craigs in N. Ireland were not RC, reflecting their Scottish origins. Craigs and McQuillans (ens) located in Wisconsin, with families fanning out to Minnesota, Missouri-and later South Dakota, with a fair number persisting in Wisconsin (Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, Madison). William (1837) and Sarah Doyle Craig homesteaded in Mitchell, SD. They were my great great grandparents on my mother's Tobin side. I have given you quite a bit of disjointed information. Do any locations or related names ring a bell with you? Are there any Catholics - a good lead, with caveats, for my Craigs. I do not have a good map of 1800s N. Ireland with townlands and parishes included. I wonder what is the location of your townlands/parishes. And as I am sure you know, Craig is a common Antrim name! Good luck to us both. . .delighted to find Craigs on this list with Antrim roots circa famine times. Marybeth Shea 17 AM To: CRAIG-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CRAIG-L] William CRAIG b. 1. [CRAIG-L] Elijah Craig "Sauce"
    2. I finally purchased my bottle of Elijah Craig Whiskey to make the bread pudding. Now I have to buy more raisin bread to replace what I ate. The most amazing thing happened when I was placing the order. We own a convenience store in middle Missouri, small town, 800 or so. As I was placing the order, a customer was standing at the checkout and mentioned what I had just ordered. He told me all about Elijah Craig who made the whiskey, he had even been to Bardstown. His interest was because he is a descendent of Elijah's. My husband is a descendent of Toliver Jr. It's just amazing all the places Terrible Toliver's family keeps showing up!! This world is certainly much smaller than it seems. Be careful what you say and do, you never know if the people around you may be relatives. Rhonda
