    3. If you only knew the frustration some of us CRAIG researchers have in NOT being able to trace our families back to N. Ireland or Scotland!!! I would dearly love it if I could prove my James came from there. However, he was killed in the Revolution and his poor widow, Rhoda Craig left nothing for us except that James was Scotch-Irish. My "group" of James Craig/Rhoda Niblick researchers have spent well over 20 years searching records, writing letters, hiring Scottish and Irish researchers and still cannot even tell us where James was born. And we are a large group of people. We believe now his father was John and his mother was Anna, but have no other information than that....not much to go on when you're looking for a connection on the old sod. Some of us like to think he may have been in the group that came with Dr. Thomas Clark from Ballybay in County Monaghan when he brought his entire congregation to America in the 1750's. There was a James Craig, but we can't prove it was our James. In fact, of all the Scotch-Irish and Scottish ancestors I've researched, I can only track the Borlands, Howatts and Russels across the water and they came here much later than James or his Gowdy, Cochran, Anderson and Scott counterparts (just a plug for more of my family!) Please don't think we are ignoring attempts to locate our families back in your territory. This is the main goal of some of us, but the name James Craig is far too common to track down back in the early 1700's. 3. There is a Robert L Craig listed on the 1920 Seneca,Newton County, Missouri census. He is 65, estimated birth year is 1854, born in Tn. R L Craig is listed on the 1930 Seneca, Newton County, Missouri census, He is 75. My GGrandfather was Isaac Craig, born in 1812 in Tn. He moved to Greene County Illinois in the 1850's and then on to Newton County Missouri in the 1870's. He died in 1898 in Seneca and is buried in the Bureson Cemetery. There were two Isaac Craig's listed on the 1880 Newton County Missouri census and so far I have not been able to connect the two families together. Your R L Craig could belong to one of these families or both.

I would like to thank LuAna Craig for this discovery. She replied to my last post (William Craig being a brother to Daniel Craig) and mentioned seeing this family on gencircles. After checking there, I poured over their records only to discover that this particular branch of the Craig family (and given as far back as this goes, probably many others) is descended from English and Scottish royalty. The farthest back anyone had gone (that I had seen) prior today was to William Craig, born 1475-1480. He married Elizabeth Lindsay and it is through her line that I made this discovery. Going back nine generations past Elizabeth, I discovered that her 8x great-grandfather was Robert Stewart. On the gencircles site he was listed as being a prince of Scotland. After digging around, I discovered that he was, indeed, Prince and his father was Robert II, the first Stewart king of Scotland from 1371-1390. Robert's brother John later became Robert III. Robert II's parents were Walter Stewart and Marjorie Bruce. Robert had inherited the throne from his grandfather, Robert the Bruce. If you would like more information on what I have found, please do not hesitate to ask...this is too big to sit on! Michael ([email protected])

I believe I am related to William Craig and Janet Stewart that arrived in PA in about 1721/22. I've copied one or two researchers information about Craigs in Scotland/Ireland and they were both different yet both involved the same given names. One even said that he could find anyones relatives in Scotland/Ireland and after two months could find no connection for me and no William that left there and came to the USA named William with a wife named Janet. Its almost as difficult finding anyone back before about 1820 in the USA since all the Federal Census's only recorded surnames and marks in a column for male and female and of different age groups. My father said that my line of Craigs came from county Clare yet all the information I have accumulated seem to point to the William and Janet I mentioned earlier. The trail, according to some researchers seems to go back to about 1550 in Scotland and everything seems to be chronologically correct. However, when I send an e-mail to get more information and supporting documents or referrences, I get mailer demons that mean my letter did not go through. I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide on my Craig search. I can't even locate any Craigs that lived in county Clare on the internet. Thanks again Jim C fm AZ

The confusing and slightly annoying thing is...........That although this site is supposed to be world wide, 95% of people on it..only seem to be looking for family in one country..ie.America. As most of your ancestors came from this side of the pond (Ireland/Scotland )...I am surprised so little efford has been made to widen your search.
