Cowden of Sevier co., TN. Thomas Cowden and Nancy Crewse may have had at least James Cowden, b. 1805 who married Henrietta Chilcutt. However, if Nancy is listed as a head of household in 1840 Rhea Co., TN, then she couldn't be James Cowden's mother. If I'm right, Thomas Cowden's parents were Thomas Cowden and Cattern Walker who appear in the 1790 and 1800 census of Spartanburg and Greenville COS SC, then ca 1806 moved to Williamson Co., TN until ca 1811, then moved someway to Blount Co., TN (records destroyed during this era as you probably know), and then into Bradley Co., TN. It's confusing because Thomas and Cattern, b. ca. to 1774 and Thomas of Bradley b. 1775 are close enough by these age groups to have been the same man. In fact I first thought Thomas of Bradley was Thomas of SC, and that Cattern was his first wife, and Nancy his second, which still might be the case. On the 1790 SC census Thomas and Cattern appear as if they are newly married, but in 1800 they have children in the household born before the 1790 census, so I'm guessing that they moved, found a home, then sent for the children...BUT that is unproven... I have found the census where Nancy is living with Johnson Crews if I remember right, and wondered at their relationship. So you think she is Johnson's mother??? Have you found a marriage cert for she and Thomas Cowden or for her Crewse marriage yet? If Thomas Cowden of Bradley was married twice, unless he is Thomas Cowden of SC and his wife was Cattern, I have no clue as to his first wife's name... The Cowdens were from NC (haven't pinpointed where yet), and the Chilcutts and Weatherly's were also from NC - Guilford Co., NC if I remember right...
