She first appears with Thomas in the 1850 Census and they are listed as "Crowden", however, I can't find my copy of the 1850 Census to tell you just where in TN. Johnson Crewse (1815-1881) is Nancy's son but I have not found who Nancy Crewse's first husband was (but could be or at least related to a Hardy Crewse that was also shown in Blount Co, TN). Therefore, it is not likely that Nancy was the mother of James Cowden (b.1805). My line is son of Nancy Crewse Cowden, Rufus M. Crewse, b.1820 (Rhea Co,TN) d.(1889)(Wright Co,MO). The 1830 Rhea Co, TN Census shows Nancy Crewse head of household with 8 children, no names listed. The 1840 Rhea Co, TN Census lists her again but no children names listed. The 1850 Census lists her with Thomas Cowden. Johnson Crewse (1815-1881) only shows up once in Rhea Co as a person working on the road near Nancy's 500 acre farm. He then marries Mary McGuire on 23 March, 1843 in McMinn Co, TN, and then in 1850 and thereafter listed in Bradley County, TN. Nancy Crewse Cowden b.12/25/1785 (NC) d.9/19/1878 (TN), buried in Chilcut-Piney Cemetery in Bradley County on the Polk County line. I have a picture of her tombstone and it shows no other tombstone near hers although I understand that Thomas is buried in the cemetery as well as her son Johnson Crewse (1815-1881) and family.
