Her birth name was Marie Cowden and she was born on October 30, 1916. She was given up for adoption to the Iowa Children's Home Society, and adopted on December 29, 1916, by Dr. Fred and Mabel Cowley Harris. Her name was then changed to Ruth Marie Harris. The adoption occurred in Black Hawk County, Iowa.
