Just by a quick look at dates, I see that some Cowdens go back to the 1700's in the USA. My tree so far goes back to Scotland in the mid 1800's. I would be interested in knowing when the first Cowden set foot on the New World. Please write back at robertcowden@hotmail.com

    1. Cowden family
    2. I see Jennie made her initial post on the Cowden rootsweb Bible page back in 1999 and Shawn responded to it Saturday. I have heard, too, that Cowdens are all related somewhere, but so far I have not been able to find much of a common link with mine and the rest of the writers on the Cowden list — what few there are. My great-grandfather was Henry Leonard Cowden, b. 23 April 1859 in Colville, Benton County, Arkansas Henry was the son of Leonard, aka Len, Lynn and Lenord, Cowden, born 1797 in South Carolina. Leonard had children by two wives Leonard's chronology appears as follows: Married to Marguret, ca. 1821 Wilburn Mayberry Cowden born 9 January 1823, Sevier County, Tennessee Walker Cowden (2) born 1825/30 Jane "Jennie" Cowden born 16 January 1826/8 Rebecca Cowden born ca. 1827 Mary Cowden born 1829 Elizabeth "Lizzie" Cowden born 1832 Martha G. Cowden born 1835 Sarah C. Cowden born 21 June 1838,, Sevier County, Tennessee James "Jamie" Cowden born 19 May 1840 Katherine Cowden born 30 March 1842, Sevier County, Tennessee Thomas C. Cowden born 16 August 1844 Married to Mary Catherine Thomas, ca. 1846 at Sevierville, Tennessee Hannah Cowden born 7 March 1847, Sevier County, Tennessee Melinda Cowden born 3 June 1849, Sevier County, Tennessee Lucinda Cowden born 9 October 1851, Sevier County, Tennessee Henry Leonard Cowden born 23 April 1859, Colville near Bentonville, Arkansas Many of these siblings settled in Texas, and several went to Texas "for the duration" during the Civil War years. I suspect allied Cowden families to have settled near Harrison, Arkansas, and Springfield, Missouri. Allied family names with the above siblings include: Thomas; Chillcutt; Catlett; Henry; White; Roberts; Moore; and Williams — especially Williams, Moore and Henry. I show Leonard to be the son of a Cattern (Cathern?), 1775-1820, and Thomas Cowden, who had another spouse, Nancy Crewes. It looks like Thomas may have had two wives at about the same time — some thing goes for son Leonard, though. There are some other children of Leonard I have listed which I question, as they appear to be born long before Leonard got married. If any of this rings any bells with you Cowden researchers out there, fell free to contact me. I'd love to clear up some on my puzzelment on this line. BAlan31282@aol.com E. 3. I'm sorry, Mary Cowden was born 1740-1760 not 1786, Cowden is her maiden name. She married John Mercer, date and location unknown. Mary Cowden and John Mercer are the parents of Mary (Margaret) Mercer. who married Robert Welsh. Mary (Margaret) was born 1786. These names and dates are from the Welsh family bible. So far they have been pretty accurate. I think I am working on too many lines at once. Many apologies. 3. Hi Ted I think it is likely that Mary Cowden is from Virginia or Maryland. That seems to be where most of the Mercers are from as well. Do you have parents, siblings or children for Samuel? It seems unlikely that Mary would be as far south as the Carolinas (no one ever seems to leave the south) unless they were Quakers. I do have several Quaker lines that went south then north again because of an aversion to slavery. Susan ----- Original Message ----- From: "W. 2. Can't express how happy to know there is finally a Cowden Family e-mail group. It's such a rare name, at least in my neck of the wood. My aunt recently compiled research on the line which she has collected and documented over the past 25 years or so. There are still a lot of questions, but she's getting up in years and wanted to get what she had into the hands of the younger generation before it was too late. I have information on the following: Sybil Clarrisa Cowden, b. 14 Sept. 1912, m Aubrey William Henry Long 6 June 1933, died 18 Sept. 2000; lifelong resident of Benton County, Arkansas. Her parents — Thomas Walker "Bob" Cowden, b 6 July 1884, m. Mary Jane Roper, 8 Aug. 1909, d. 12 Aug, 1972; lifelong resident of Benton County, Arkansas. "Bob's" parents — Henry Leonard Cowden, b. 23 April 1859, Benton County, Arkansas, m. Clarissa Clementine "Lissa" Williams, 1 Jan. 1882, d. 1 March 1891, Dublin, Texas Henry Leonard's parents — Leonard "Len' "Lynn" "Lenord" Cowden, b. 1797, North Carolina, m. Marguret, bef. 1830 (?), m. Mary Catherine Thomas (probably Cherokee), ca. 1846, d. ca 1880 'Lynn's" parents — Thomas (William?) Cowden, b. ca. 1775, possibly in Scotland, m. #1 Cattern (believed to be Cherokee) ca 1790, m. #2 Nancy Crewes Families allied with this line include: Hammack, Thomas, Harvey and Gore. I welcome further enlightenment per this family, and am willing to share any information I have. E. Alan Long

    2. Joanne Cowden
    3. Fellow Researchers I've only just joined the list and wanted to introduce myself. My research interests are based on the Cowden family who resided in Kirkmaiden from the mid-1700's, starting with William Coudan who married Janet McGuffog in August 1775. We have some very sketchy information prior to this William but nothing definite. The next generation of Cowdens married into the McClurgs, MacGills, Warwick, Kelly and McPhail before leaving Scotland for Manchester. I understand that Peter Cowden (b 1838-1928) wrote two books: one under the non de plume of Jacob McCullough and contributed regularly to the free press, he also wrote about the history of the Cowden family, claiming lineage from Edinburgh. Do anyone have any further information pertaining to these publications or access to any printed materials written by Peter. I'd be grateful to hear from anyone with any information. I believe the name of one of the books Peter wrote was "Free and United Free Church Life". Looking forward to hearing from anyone... Joanne Sydney, Australia.
