Bill, My database shows the following: Alexander M. Cowden, born 31 May 1855 Crawfordsville, Washington, Iowa Alexander M. was the son of Alexander Cowden and Margaret Lackey. Alexander Cowden (the father), born 30 Apr 1795 in Pennsylvania Alexander was the son of Joseph Cowden and Mary May Joseph Cowden, born Oct 1765 Joseph Cowden was the son of John Cowden and Mary Reynolds. John Cowden supposedly died about 1776 while migrating westward with his family from eastern Pennsylvania. His widow, Mary Reynolds Cowden, eventually settled with her children in what is now Washington Co, Pennsylvania, where many Cowdens still reside, including my branch of the family. Let me know if I can be of more help. Dick Wert DickWert@aol.com

My Robert Hardin Fullerton married a Mary C. Cowden - not Fullerton. It seems that your message had Cynthia's maiden name as Cowden and her married name as Fullerton, which would mean that her daughter Mary C. was not a Cowden. Please let me know if I have made a mistake - I'm confused about this one.

I have only just begun to research the Cowden-Fullerton side of my family so I don't have all the names and dates. I am also descended from the Burns family of Pleasant Hope and the Wilson family from around the same area. My great grandmother was Anna Lou Fullerton Burns (married to Thomas Lafayette Burns, son of Robert W. and Mariah, grandson of John and Margaret Wilson Burns - all buried in the PH Cemetery). Anna Lou was the daughter of Robert Hardin Fullerton and Mary C. Cowden Fullerton. I didn't know Mary's parents' names until I saw your posting. My Anna Lou is listed in the 1870 census as Cynthia A.L. - I guess she was named for her grandmother. I would love to correspond with you about Cowden family history. Please either post a reply to my message or contact me directly by email. I look forward to hearing from you.

A 'state' alone is not always helpful. I am the gggrdchild of HENRY COWDEN, b. abt. 1845 in Virginia or Maryland, d. 12/31/1895 in Burlington, Iowa, but before the Civil War and the end of slavery he lived in Booneville, Columbia County, Missouri. He enlisted in the 60th US Colored Troops from there in Dec. 1863. CHARLES COWDEN (a relative?) mustered in from Booneville into the 68th US Colored Infantry the next year. CHARLES returned to Booneville after the Late Unpleasantness. HENRY married once in Keokuk, Iowa to a wife who died before producing an heir. HENRY married ROSANNA MUDD (WHITESIDES) COWDEN about 1875. They had 8 children. NATHAN (?1876); CHESTER (1877); GOLDIE (1880); ELLA(1883); ISAIAH (d. 1886); CLIFFORD (1890); MABEL (1893); and GERTRUDE (1895). All the children were born in Burlington, Iowa and ROSANNA died 8/11/1944 collecting a Civil War pension until the day she died.
My ancestors included the Cowdens of Washington County, PA where they have been for over 200 years. My mother is a Cowden from near Hickory in Washington County. I have collected some information on our branch of the family as well as a little bit of data on some other lines, assuming we are all related somewhere back in time. Here's my mystery. As the story goes, John Cowden, his wife, Mary Reynolds, and their family migrated toward western PA in the 1770's. On that journey, John Cowden died in what is now Maryland. His widow, Mary, and the family eventually moved on and settled near what is now Hickory, Washington Co, PA. A Cowden - Welch history written in 1904 by Marcus Welch claimed this John Cowden was the son of Matthew Cowden who had settled in Paxtang, PA near Harrisburg. This has always been accepted as fact by our family. However, other researchers on the internet have sent me transcripts of the wills of three of Matthew's sons that make it fairly clear that John Cowden, the son of Matthew, moved to North Carolina and had a family there that spread into Tennessee and parts south and west. So now my problem is where did MY John Cowden and his wife come from? If not from Paxtang, then where? I know there were Cowdens in Chester Co, PA during colonial times, but don't know if they were related. Anyone have any info or ideas on this??? Thanks. Dick Wert

Walker Cowden was born about 1816 in either Spartanburg/Greenville Cos., SC or Williamson or Blount Co., TN., if Thomas Cowden and Cattern ___ were his parents. Walker is believed to have been the brother of Lynn Cowden 1800-c.1880 of Sevier Co., TN and Benton Co., AR., my ancestor. Other brothers may have been Thomas Cowden of Bradley Co., TN., and Henry Cowden of Blount & McMinn Cos., TN., and possibly James Cowden of Sevier Co., TN. Walker Cowden is listed on a tax list in Bradley Co., TN., where he lived after marrying Amy Kerr. They moved to Greene Co., MO., where he supposedly died 1843, and she remarried to John Steele. I have MANY questions about this branch of our family, as well as my own, because of name confusion and other evidence. My email is LLLHALE@YAHOO.COM. Feel free to email me!

This has been one hectic time for me! Cynthia's line according to my sources is as follows: I.1. Cynthia Cowden married John Rucker/Rooker. II.2. William Cowden. 3. Catherine Yates. III.4. Robert Cowden (II) 5. Mary Alcorn IV.8. Robert Cowden (I) 9. Hannah _____ This line above comes from the book, "The Southern Cowdens," by John Brandon Cowden, 1933. Cynthia and John married in Jefferson Co., ALA 27 Nov 1839. A descendant listed in an old book was: Mrs. Ruby Floyd Dodson, 125 W. Geronimo, Chandler, AZ in 1962. Cynthia & John are listed on the 1840 Jefferson Co., ALA census, page 192. They are listed on the 1850 Blount Co., ALA Census, page 096, with children, Catharine, Robert, James, and Louisa. They are listed on the 1860 Jefferson Co., ALA census page 799, with children, Thommis, James, Louisa, Emely, Mary, Malina, and John. The lineage back to Robert (I) Cowden and Hannah is correct. Robert & Hannah lived in Mecklenburg Co., NC, then in Cabbarrus Co., NC. Robert had brothers, Walter, William, and Samuel. All lived at one time in Augusta Co., VA., but Samuel is the most prominent there. The relationship between these brothers are proven by wills and deeds. There were other Cowdens in Augusta Co., VA, but I don't know how they are related to one another. Hope this helps! Lisa Hale
