    3. The following newspaper clippings were pasted in an old scap book. The unknown collector had clipped them from a 1891 Crawford County, Missouri newspaper. ----LVILLE, MO. Nov. 19, 1891 Obituary Miss Lou COWDEN, who died at her sister's, Mrs. M. O. TAYLOR's at Bourbon, on the 9th inst., was the daughter of the Rev. J. W. Cowden formerly of this county, and at the time of her death was in the 35th year of her age. She has resided in the city for a number of years and was in the country this fall to try and recuperate her health, which has been very much impaired for sometime, when she was attacked with the erysipelas and only lived a few days. Miss Lou became converted to the cause of Christ under her father's preaching when very young and from that time to her death, lived a model Christian life. She showed her Christian virtues in all her walks in life and never found anything too much or to exacting for her to do for the cause of religion. She was noble, generous, kind and lovely to and loved by all. Well can the brothers and sisters say with the poet: "Sister, thou was mild and lovely, Gentle as the summer breeze; Pleasant as the air of evening, as it floats amon! g the trees." Since her death, one of the family has written: "She was the best of us all; loving, kind and industrious, better to others than to herself. To liertt is rest, eternal rest." She was buried at Leasburg on the 11th where a large number of friends, neighbors and old schoolmates had gathered to pay her the last sad tribute of respect. MARRIAGE Married, at the residence of J. C. BURKES, last Sunday evening at 4 o'clock, Mr. William DRENNON and Miss Rena MARSH, both of Riverside. Rev. PHILLIPS officiating. Wherever you dwell, May content be your log; And friendship like ivy, Encircle your cot. Is the best with of Samant_____ OBITUARY The sad intelligence reached here on Tuesday, that Edw. M. CLARK died at his home in Hermann, MO., on the 30th of Nov. 1891, from typhoid fever. The deceased was reared in this county, and from this place enlisted in the 7th Missouri Cavalry. In 1869 he was married to Mary A. GIBSON, daughter of Dr. Alexander Gibson of this place, who bore him a son and daughter, who are both living. He resided for several years in Phelps county where he was elected clerk of the Circuit Court. He was there admitted to the bar, but finally removed to Gasconade County where he practiced his profession up to the time of his fatal illness. He was an intelligent and able man, a genial and kindhearted citizen, an indulgent father and a faithful husband. His remains were brought to Steelville, and buried from the Baptist church on Wednesday. Mr. Wm. JOLLEY & Miss. Anna A. FANNING, were married at the residence of Mr. John Fanning yesterday, 13 Jan 1792. (should this be 1892?)

    3. Robert Allen COWDEN was born on the 16th of July in 1855 in Buffalo, Dallas County, Missouri. It is believed, but not yet proven, that his parents are Robert COWDEN and Mary BARLOW, I have no evidence of this as of yet, as I have surveyed the 1860 Buffalo, Dallas County, MO census, and under Robert and Mary is no listing for Robert, or any variation thereof. He met, and marred Elizabeth OLINGER, daughter to Philip Israel OLINGER (OHLINGER) and Mary YEAGER, originally from Tennessee, having moved to Buffalo sometime after 1854, but before 1857. This Robert Cowden has been a thorn in my side for a number of years and I would really love to get it out of my side and get on with researching the other branches of my family. I even put my Genealogy down for over 8 years because of the frustration that I had suffered from not being able to find the right parentage for Robert Allen Cowden. I have come to believe that there are just as many ROBERT COWDEN's out there as there are John Smith's!!!! I haven't found anything like that in my research...Is the last name (Cowden) spelled differently? Where did you find the record? I am so excited! New info on his family! Samuel had two sons by Martha Wilson - John and Walter Cowden, according to his will. Martha Wilson had Elizabeth and Martha Wilson by her first husband, Samuel Wilson. Elizabeth Wilson daughter of Martha above evidently married a James Cowden first, then either he died or they divorced, and she remarried to John Griffin who was a silversmith. Martha married Patrick McDavid/McDivit. I don't have any other info on another marriage of Samuel Cowden, except some people say he had been married before...NO PROOF in my files. I don't know how James Cowden connects to Samuel. Robert, Walter and William, the 4 brothers that are proven by records...I'm not even sure which James Cowden he was - he may have been the James son of William Cowden who died in 1748 in Augusta or a different one....There was also Henry Cowden in Augusta Co., VA who MAY have moved to Guilford Co., NC, but again NO PROOF. Much more research is needed on these lines. People say things but don't have FACTS to back them up. I want FACTS to prove the lines! LOL! Good luck, huh? PLEASE send me the Robert Cowden estate records you have! Email or snail mail, which ever you prefer! My thoughts without having seen the records you have are: Elizabeth Cowden Wheeler was PROBABLY a daughter of Robert and Hannah Cowden of Mecklenburg. No one knows for sure how many children Robert and Hannah had, except for Robert Cowden who married Mary Alcorn. If the estate was to be divided into 6 parts, then Hannah = 1, Robert = 2, Elizabeth = 3, ? = 4, ? = 5, ? = 6. There may be three more children to find! I will check to see if I have anything on the Wheelers, and let you know if I find anything.

His widow, Martha, re-married to Samuel Cowden of Augusta Co., VA., and later of Mecklenburg Co., NC. Elizabeth Wilson first married James Cowden, who acted as her attorney in settling her father's estate, and then either divorced or he died - don't know which - and she married to John Griffen. Martha married Patrick McDavid or McDivit (appears both ways in the records). Samuel Cowden and his brothers knew Matthew Cowden of Lancaster Co., PA., and so knew his son John Cowden of Iredell & Rowan Counties, NC. They also knew the Rev. John Elder, for that is whom Robert Cowden sold his land to in Spartanburg Co., SC. I don't think that William Cowden, brother of above Robert, Samuel and Walter Cowden, had any issue of his own, as he left his property to Robert. Walter Cowden (I) seems to have not had any children, either, due to the way they handled his estate. Samuel had his two sons, John and Walter (II) Cowden, and names no other children. The only known child of Robert & Hannah Cowden was Robert Cowden who married Mary Alcorn, BUT there could have been others! The 1790 census shows Hannah Cowden as the Widow Cowden, and there is a man and woman living with her that could have been a son and wife or a son and a daughter.... I, too, am looking for the parents of Thomas Cowden of Spartanburg Co., SC & Williamson Co., TN...Robert may be our candidate..... Where did your Mary & Richard Martin live? If in the same areas as these Cowdens, could possibly be on the right track... Will keep checking my records...Please feel free to email me.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/nFQ.2ACEB/26.92.2.1 Message Board Post: Dear Betty, Samuel and Walter Cowden of Mecklenburg Co., NC were also from Augusta Co., VA. They had two known brothers, William Cowden and Robert Cowden. Robert Cowden lived in Augusta Co., VA., and Mecklenburg Co., NC., the part which later became Cabarrus Co., NC. Robert's wife was indeed named Hannah, though her maiden name as yet has been undiscovered by myself. Robert Cowden died in Mecklenburg Co., NC, and has a will on record in which he names his brothers Samuel and Walter. Samuel and Walter both died in Mecklenburg, and their estates were lumped together and settled that way. Only one of Samuel Cowden's sons inheirited from the estates of his father and uncle - Walter Cowden (II in my records to tell him from his uncle better). Samuel did have another son, named John Cowden, but he MAY have died young. John and Walter Cowden's mother was the widow Martha Wilson, widow of Samuel Wilson, of Augusta Co., VA. She and Samuel Cowden married there, but later divorced, he moving to NC, and she staying there. She later re-married to Dennis Callaghan or O'Callaghan, and moved to another place in VA. She had several children by him, I'm told. She had 2 or 3 daughters by Samuel Wilson, too. Her daughters' husbands became the guardians for John and Walter Cowden when Samuel Cowden died. I THINK Walter Cowden moved to Hancock or Hanover Co., VA., where he worked for/as a saddler, and MAY have married Mary Long, and I think they died early in life, possibly leaving an orphan son, but this is unproven as yet. The brother William Cowden is named in a deed which is very much like a will, in which he leaves his property and all rights to them to his brother and proper heir, Robert Cowden. Both he and Robert owned land which later ended up in Spartanburg/Greenville Cos, SC. The deeds concerni! ng Robert's land there show up well after his death, and that's why they are missed by most researchers. Sometimes the names of Cowen and Cowden (and variant spellings) ARE confused in the records, but so far, I haven't had much trouble in this line. However, since I don't know what happened to John Cowden, there COULD POSSIBLY be a mix-up in the names, and he did at least know of his Aunt Hannah (?) Cowden, wife of Robert. Hannah (?) Cowden did pay for the burial expenses for Samuel and Walter Cowden, as the Cowden men all died in the 1780s in Mecklenburg Co., NC. Sincerely, Lisa Hale
