    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/mbexec/msg/rw/nFQ.2ACEB/231.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Lisa, Nancy Crewse Cowden could not be married to Thomas Cowden until after 1840. She first appears with Thomas in the 1850 Census and they are listed as "Crowden", however, I can't find my copy of the 1850 Census to tell you just where in TN. Johnson Crewse (1815-1881) is Nancy's son but I have not found who Nancy Crewse's first husband was (but could be or at least related to a Hardy Crewse that was also shown in Blount Co, TN). Therefore, it is not likely that Nancy was the mother of James Cowden (b.1805). My line is son of Nancy Crewse Cowden, Rufus M. Crewse, b.1820 (Rhea Co,TN) d.(1889)(Wright Co,MO). The 1830 Rhea Co, TN Census shows Nancy Crewse head of household with 8 children, no names listed. The 1840 Rhea Co, TN Census lists her again but no children names listed. The 1850 Census lists her with Thomas Cowden. Johnson Crewse (1815-1881) only shows up once in Rhea Co as a person working on the road near Nancy's 500 acre farm. He then marries Mary McGuire on 23 March, 1843 in McMinn Co, TN, and then in 1850 and thereafter listed in Bradley County, TN. Nancy Crewse Cowden b.12/25/1785 (NC) d.9/19/1878 (TN), buried in Chilcut-Piney Cemetery in Bradley County on the Polk County line. I have a picture of her tombstone and it shows no other tombstone near hers although I understand that Thomas is buried in the cemetery as well as her son Johnson Crewse (1815-1881) and family.

He finally just got all of the birth and death certificates (ORDERED FROM THE STATES NOT THE COUNTIES), marriage certs, and the application and mailed them in. He notice before he mailed them that the birth/death certs had a handwritten number on them in different areas on the certs before he mailed them. When he got the answer back from the Nation, his CDIB card was enclosed, and when he got to checking the CDIB numbers for each ancestor, they were the handwritten numbers from the certs!!!! The States don't know what these numbers are, so they can't tell you about them. Check your certificates!!!!!

Cowden of Sevier co., TN. Thomas Cowden and Nancy Crewse may have had at least James Cowden, b. 1805 who married Henrietta Chilcutt. However, if Nancy is listed as a head of household in 1840 Rhea Co., TN, then she couldn't be James Cowden's mother. If I'm right, Thomas Cowden's parents were Thomas Cowden and Cattern Walker who appear in the 1790 and 1800 census of Spartanburg and Greenville COS SC, then ca 1806 moved to Williamson Co., TN until ca 1811, then moved someway to Blount Co., TN (records destroyed during this era as you probably know), and then into Bradley Co., TN. It's confusing because Thomas and Cattern, b. ca. to 1774 and Thomas of Bradley b. 1775 are close enough by these age groups to have been the same man. In fact I first thought Thomas of Bradley was Thomas of SC, and that Cattern was his first wife, and Nancy his second, which still might be the case. On the 1790 SC census Thomas and Cattern appear as if they are newly married, but in 1800 they have children in the household born before the 1790 census, so I'm guessing that they moved, found a home, then sent for the children...BUT that is unproven... I have found the census where Nancy is living with Johnson Crews if I remember right, and wondered at their relationship. So you think she is Johnson's mother??? Have you found a marriage cert for she and Thomas Cowden or for her Crewse marriage yet? If Thomas Cowden of Bradley was married twice, unless he is Thomas Cowden of SC and his wife was Cattern, I have no clue as to his first wife's name... The Cowdens were from NC (haven't pinpointed where yet), and the Chilcutts and Weatherly's were also from NC - Guilford Co., NC if I remember right...
