It might be interesting to identify these different Cowan Families. <g> These marriages are from one of the Marriage Record Books that I have on Jefferson County,Tennessee Marriages. Example: (1) Cowan, Andrew to Jean Walker; bn; Samuel Wear, 179? - This is Andrew Cowan that ties into the 7 brothers - he is the Andrew that was 1st married to Mary Walker. From "Genealogy of the Descendants of John Walker of Wigton, Scotland (1600-1902)" by Emma Siggins White or the Wigton Walker Book - pages as follows. Page 6 - John Walker married Ann Houston March 1734 and they had nine children. Three of the Walker sisters married three Cowan brothers. The one of interest is Mary Walker that married Andrew Cowan (a Colonial soldier see Virginia Magazine, Volume 8, page 280) Pages 176 and 177 - Samuel Walker married Jane Patterson and had eight children. The child of interest here is James Walker that married Jane Thompson. This Jane is often found as Jean so it is a typo or she went by both Jane and Jean. Pages 180 and 181 James Walker married Jane Thompson in Sept 1786, they had two daughters and James Walker died in May 1791at age 39. Their daughter, Elizabeth Lyle Walker married Thomas McSpadden about 1809 and they had eleven children. Daughter, Jane Walker married John Ritchie Inman about 1807 and had sixteen children. Mary Walker Cowan dies and her cousin, James Wallker dies. Next, Andrew Cowan marries Jean (Jane) Thompson Walker. Mary Walker and James Walker would be first cousins children of brothers. Three children were born to Andrew and Jean Thompson Walker Cowan - Joel Cowan, Thompson Cowan, and Matthew Cowan. Joel Cowan married Annis W. Inman. Annis was born 1797 and the Parham-Cowan Folder from the vertical files at McClung lists Joel Cowan b-1794 d-1850 and states that he married in 1819 which is supported by the marriage records found in Dandridge, Tennessee at the courthouse. I also have the list of the marriage bonds that are found in the court house which differs a little from Penny's book that is quoted above. I belive that these records tie into this same family. (2) Cowan, Mathew to Polly Turner; bn; Joe Gregory Wit: J. Hamilton, April 6, 1820 (3) Cowen, Thompson to Charlotte Copland; bn; Benjamin Inman: Wit: Martin Wyle, September 18, 1810 (4) Cowan, Rachel to Robert Swann: License: June 8, 1814 This line is researched by Paul Cowan that lives in Texas. I think that this is the line that allowed him to become a member of the 1st Families of Tennessee. I don't have all of my notes down at this computer. <g>
