My Cowans emerged from the Yarrow area in Selkirkshire, Scotland. Any of this sound familiar? Descendants of James COWAN of Selkirkshire, Scotland. His son Andrew COWAN, born there ca. 1767, came to Delaware Co., NY, near Fall Clove before 1821. Andrew's daughter Janet COWAN married Walter BIGGAR of Bovina, NY. Another daughter was Margaret (Cowan) NEISH of Erin, NY. Other descendants were Adam COWAN and his daughter Dr. Isabel COWAN of Rodney, Iowa. William COWAN, born Selkirkshire, Scotland ca. 1752, came to Delaware Co., NY in 1821 as a widower, with a daughter and her family, and lived on the other side of a high hill which separated the two farms. Mrs. Murray (Bertha Cowan) MAYES is a descendant. William's eldest son (William Cowan?) had emigrated to Australia before 1821, and second son James COWAN went to Dumfries, Upper Canada (now Ontario) with his uncle Walter COWAN in 1829. James' farm there was on the Cedar Creek Road. Some of his descendants in Ontario: (1960's or '70's list) Charlton COWAN, Southwood Dr., Mrs. A.E. DEDMAN, New Dundee, Jessie, Ethel and Stewart COWAN, Drumbo, Wm. MCCULLOCH, Toronto. "Some in this family went to the prairies. One descendant is Mrs. Jean TAYLOR, Wawota, Saskatchewan. Mrs. Murray MAYES (Bertha Cowan), NY 12430 knows more of William's descendants in Delaware Co., NY." [Four Cowan Families, by Jennie F. Cowan] Walter COWAN, born in Selkirkshire, Scotland ca. 1778, came to Dumfries (Ontario) with his nephew James COWAN, and sons James Scott COWAN (b.ca.1808), Walter Scott COWAN, born in Yarrow Feus, Selkirkshire 31 Oct.,1817, and possibly William COWAN, said to have been baptized in the Manor Church near Cademuir, Scotland. Walter possibly had 2 wives, Jennie SCOTT and Agnes WILLISON. James Scott Cowan married Ann MATHESON, possibly of Yarrow, Selkirkshire, Scotland. J.S.C. worked for the Hon. Wm. S. DICKSON, who developed the land around Dumfries, Ontario. J.S.C. lived on Roseville Road, and named the farm "Altrieve" after the Altrieve in Ettrick, Scotland, owned by James HOGG, the "Ettrick Shipherd: and poet. Walter Scott COWAN married Margaret MCPHAIL, born 4 Aug 1822 in Stamford, Delaware Co., NY. They farmed in neighboring Puslinch twp. at Juniper Hill Farm. Evidently William inherited his father's West River Road farm. Some of his descendants, besides my own grandfather, Thomas COWAN, and his father Walter Scott COWAN (born 1843, died 1930), are Dr. J.W.Grant MCEWEN, Calgary, former Lt. Governor of Alberta, Mrs. Milton MANN (Jennie Cowan), London, Mrs. Norman WAINMAN (Margaret Blake), Avenue Rd., Ian LANDRETH, Thomas Cowan LANDRETH, Helen Scott ARTHUR, John MCINTYRE, all of Cambridge, Ontario. Thomas COWAN, born ca. 1771, never left Scotland, but prepared for his family's departure after his death (in 1833). His widow (name?), their sons James and William and daughter Margaret, James' new bride Helen LAING, her mother and two sisters settled north of Galt, Ontario in 1834 (Waterloo Twp., farm named Clochmhor for the high hill in Cramalt, Scotland). William died 1839 (had he married?), Margaret married James Shaw, from near Hespeler, Ontario. This James COWAN became a member of Parliament in the early 1860's, and served as Clerk of Kirk Sessions for Knox Church. Some of Thomas' descendants are: James COWAN of West River Road, Mrs. Douglas CHALK (Janet Cowan), Cambridge, James E. COWAN, Cambridge, Marion COWAN, Toronto, Mrs. Don VIRGO (Helen Cowan), Montreal, Mrs Wm. LITTLE (Joan Cowan), Statford, Dr. Laing Gray COWAN of near Washington DC, R.D. FERGUSON, Walkerton, and Mrs. Ken CAMPBELL (Helen Ferguson), Strathroy, grandchildren of Helen Shaw FERGUSON, Marion SHAW, John SHAW, Kitchener, James SHAW, Guelph, Mrs Gordon KLAGER (Margaret Shaw), William SHAW, Mississauga, Mrs Archie LAWRENCE (Isabel Shaw), Burlington, and Marjorie SHAW, Ottawa. Hi Valorie, Here are the birthplaces that I have, I think they are all in County of Dumphries. Lochmaben I know is as it says so on Mary Jane COWAN's birth certificate. Barbara FARRISH born in Ruthwell, died in Traebeattie Edward/Edmond COWAN born in Hutton, died in Maxwelltown. He was a ploughman. Jane NICHOL born in Lochmaben, Scotland, died in Rosetown, Saskatchewan Mary Jane COWAN d/o Edward/Edmond, born in Lochmaben Scotland, died in Rosetown Saskatchewan Hellen COWAN d/o Edward/Edmond, born in Ruthwell, Scotland. Andrew Nichol COWAN s/o Edward/Edmond, born in Torthorwald, died in Lochmaben. Agnes Johnstone COWAN d/o Edward/Edmond, born Torthorwald, Scotland. We believe this is Aunt Nan who also came to Canada and died at Rosetown, Saskatchewan. Robert COWAN s/o Edward/Edmond, born Torthorwald, Scotland, died Rosetown, Saskatchewan. Edmond COWAN s/o Mary Jane born Kirkcudbright, Scotland, died Rosetown, Saskatchewan. Two of Mary Jane's nephews also came to Canada. Tom died at Rosetown, Saskatchewan. Jim moved from Rosetown and is believed to have gone to the US. We have no information on Jim after he moved. We have a COWAN family in our area that came out of Declaire, Manitoba. As far as we know there is no connection but when I was researching Homestead papers I found a Mary Jane COWAN homesteaded in Manitoba. Only thing is my Mary Jane was already ELLIOTT before she came to Canada.
