David Cowan came to the United States in the late 1830's with his wife Elizabeth P. and 7 children. Mary Ann b. 1822, James Andrew b. 1823, John David b. 1825, Samuel b. 1827, Nancy Jane b. 1830, William T. b. 1830, Elizabeth b. 1835.Their last child was born in S. Carolina, Sarah Ann. They came from Ireland but where exactly I do not know. They settled first in Abbeville SC. So I assume they landed in Charleston, but I'm not sure. The family bought land in Yalobusha Co. Miss. in Sept. 1843 next to land owned by a William Cowan. There John, sometimes Jaen married Janie Elvira Nations. She sometimes is called Elizabeth and sometimes Thira Jane, and also Bauthena. The Nations family was in Yalobusha County and before that in Tenn. The couple lived in Gonzales Co. Tx. and Fayette County Tx. They are buried in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Fayette County. Oral family history says that the Cowan family was in Scotland before Ireland and called themselves Scotch-Irish in later years. If you want to talk my phone # is 830-875-3223.
