Hi Jim My line could come through Ireland along the way somewhere. I just meant that time spent on trying to find a connection to the 7 Cowan bros, or the 4 Cowan brothers, or cousins, is no longer an issue. DNA says we do not connect to either of those lines. Becky and List, Hi Becky, welcome back, we've missed you. Maybe we do need to look at what had been proven to be the seven brothers and their connections before DNA testing. Last I heard we connect in DNA to the James Cowan who married Margaret Christie/Christian Russell, and died in Knox County, TN. Becky, has this been changed and just didn't know about it? This may have started a new ballgame as he was thought to be a brother to one of the Samuel Cowans and his brother, Nathanial Cowan. If that is so, we need to see exactly how many Samuel Cowans there are in the area and which one is the brother to James d. 1801 and Nathaniel Cowan. Also find out the Samuel, our Jewish line connects to, and where this Samuel and Nathaniel went and find their desc. Hopefully they each have a living male to be tested. Keep your fingers crossed!!!! In reading Cindy Stamps postings on the group, there seems to be more than just one Samuel and I can't tell which is which. Does anyone know how they descend? Help needed, please. We also have two John Cowans from John Cowan, Sr. of Mecklenburg Co:his son John Jr, and his son as mentioned in William Cowan's will in 1785, also in Mecklenburg Co. Cyndi's Elizah could come from any of the above?????? Since a Patrick Crafford/Crawford witnessed John, SR's will with Robert Gault/Galt, we need to know how they are connected. I have found an early Patrick Crafford and A John Cowan in the VA militia in the Indian uprisings in Orange or Surry Co. Va. ca 1752, but it could be either Jr., Sr, or other, since in the will he states that John Jr. is his oldest son! I also find the deaths of a Patrick Crawford and George Crawford in SC, same area as a Drury Breazele mentioned in Cindy Stamps land transfers in Knox Co. TN. Robert Gault/Galt and his brother went to SC. Does anyone connect here? Patrick Crafford/Crawford was married to a Mary Cowan, but can't find her parents. He was killed while on patrol. His patrol split up, each group going in different directions, looking for the enemy. Later their paths met, but each thought the other the enemy they were hunting. A Mr. Moore shot first and killed Patrick Crafford/Crawford, only to find out he had killed his best friend. Does anyone have this Mary Cowan in their line? We also connect to the David Cowen of Laurens Co. SC who fought in NC, but came from VA. We also connect to John Cowan of Chester Co. SC, but these are believed to connect further back . Joseph Cowan, from whom we descend and his mother, Margret Cowan, were in Burke Co. NC in the 1790 Census. Joseph had applied for a land grant 1778 on South Muddy Creek, which was granted in 1788. Joseph went back and enlisted in the Rev. War with his neighbors and fought at Baldhead Island in the Bay, Ramsours Mill, where he lost an eye, and Cowan's Ford. Gene Laughridge, who also belongs to our Burke Co/McDowell Co line has recently found a Joseph Cowan as a buyer at an Estate Sale in Lincoln Co. NC, in 1782 for a John KING, deceased. We have never found his first wife's name, but in 1790, he was in a HH with two young boys and three females. Margret Cowan was in a seperate household, as the only person, neighbors to Charity Patton, Francis/Frank Patton, Robert Patton and Andrew Wood on South Muddy Creek. Joseph Cowan was living on Silver Creek until he bought the Cane Creek land. In 1803, Joseph Cowan bought 300 acres of land from Robert Sellers,Sr, land belonging to Robert Sellers, Jr, who had died that year. This land was on Cane Creek of Burke Co, 1/2 mile from the Rutherford Co. NC line. Both the Muddy Creek land and the Cane Creek land continued through various members of the family, where I visited as a child. Joseph Cowan married a second time in 1799 to a Nancy Buchanan. They had two sons and three daughters and moved to the Haywood/MaconJackson Co. area of NC before 1826, where many descendants still live today. If you have any of our answers, or if you connect, we would truly appreciate your help.
