Hi, Linda. This William Cowan was the son of John and Elizabeth Cowan, the early Lancaster Co., PA immigrants. I have that Sarah was the daughter of James Stewart and wife, Elizabeth Davies. James Stewart was the son of Lazarus Stewart and Margaret Steuart. The list of children for William and Sarah needs some revision. There was no "Lawry" or "Sherad." This misreading of a Jackson Co., GA deed was copied into Fleming's "Cowans from County Down." Sherad should be Stewart and I'm not sure what they confused Lawry with. I have a copy of the actual document. I believe there were two other daughters beside Mary Cowan Crockett--a Mrs. Poage and a Mrs. Simpson (?), I believe. I am descended from son Stewart Cowan (1775-1850s) who married Mary Stuart, possibly a daughter of Elizabeth Stewart Cowan's brother, Matthew Stewart. But I'm not sure about that. The Stewart Cowan family and the Mary Cowan Crockett family moved from GA to TN, soon after 1813, settling at the base of Cumberland Mountain in Franklin County. This area later became part of Coffee County and then Grundy County. I have seen the grave of Mary Cowan Crockett and husband in the abandoned Crockett Cemetery there. Stewart and Mary Cowan are probably buried in unmarked graves there, as well.
