Surnames: Cowan Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DMQ.2ACIB/1123 Message Board Post: Looking for parents of Samuel J. Cowan (72) in the 1850 Abbeville County, SC Census. His 1851 will names wife Sarah (Jane), son Robert Simpson Cowan, son Sheppard Grance Cowan, apparent daughter Amanda Tolbert, son Wade Cowan, son William Nixon Cowan, son Edmund Cowan, son Charles Wesley Cowan, and apparent daughter Mary Jane Cason. The Samuel Cowan/Cowen name first appears in the 1810 Abbeville census but there are two of that name with one listed as "SR" but they are both in the same age bracket (26-44). In the 1820 census both are enumerated and both are still in the 26-44 age bracket which would seem to rule out a father/son kinship. Only one Sam Cowan appears on the 1830 and 1840 census which is likely the same individual as in 1850. There are two additional Samuel Cowans found in county records--a Samuel Cowans mentioned in the 1792 Abbeville County will of John Cowans and an 1827 Tax Petition by a Captain Samuel Cowan. I have the line from Samuel J. Cowan (1850) to son Edmund to son Samuel Jordan Cowan (McDuffie/Lincoln Counties, GA) to son Samuel Jordan Cowan who ultimately settled in Jefferson County, GA. His living son, also Samuel Jordan Cowan, currently lives in Bulloch County, GA. Any help in sorting out these Samuel Cowans (1792-1820) would be greatly appreciated.
