    1. Dobbin/s, Skiles/Skyles and Cowen/an, Graham--Catherine NOT married to John Cowen/an

    3. Thank you Claude--I would love to share/verify information with you on the Skiles: Okay, I've got it figured out now. I was confused about the will of Henry Skiles Sr leaving everything to Catherine Cowen. There WAS a Catherine Skiles Cowan who married William Cowan who would have fit this time frame. (marriage about 1750) This is the Catherine Skiles daughter of Henry Skiles SR who died in 1750 and left everything to his daughter Catherine Cowen. His daughter would NOT be the Catherine who could have married John Cowan. So it's back to the drawing board--still no wife for John Cowen. I thought I had it there. Once Claude provided a birth date of 1738...and she would have only been 12 years old in 1750 when she got married--it was back to the drawing board again. I went back to my family history and started checking out Catherine Skyles and found out that the one born in 1738 was married to William Cowan. (She still would have only been 12 years old....but maybe the date 1738 isn't right). Once I realized there were two Catherine Skyles it made better sense. The other Catherine Skyles born in 1764 (daughter of Henry Skiles Jr) would have been a candidate also....but nothing says she married a Cowan. HOWEVER, if you look at the deed below....there you'll see JOHN COWAN and HENRY SKILES JR linked up. Back to the elusive question of WHO IS JOHN COWAN'S WIFE? Was she one of Henry Skiles Jr's daughters? I'm convinced she must have been a SKILES....or why would Joseph have the middle name of SKILES? Why was John Cowen mentioned in the deed below--was he a son-in-law? Is he my! John Cowen? My John Cowen was on or near Second Creek, Rowan County, North Carolina. "ROWAN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEED ABSTRACTS 1762 - 1772 6:313,314. Robert Harden to Hugh Jenkins for 285 pds 597 A on Second Crk adj the Great Road by the White Glade adj Daniel Hare, John Long & Henry Skyle granted 22 Feb 1759. 19 Sept 1765. John Braly, George Cowan. John Cowan." How many John Cowan's were there in North Carolina in 1759 to 1765? Darn those old Scotch/Irish ways of using the same names over and over and over again. And darn, so many Dobbins/Skiles/Cowan/Graham marriages going every which way for quite a few years because they were all neighbors. There must be a Skiles researcher out there somewhere who know's which Skiles woman married John Cowen. His wife HAS TO BE A SKILES!!!!! Anyway, Claude, thanks for your help (even if it did blow my theory right out of the water). I have William, Henry, John, Alexander, Jane, Mary and James listed as their children. I do, however have A Catherine Dobbins, daughter of Anna Elizabeth Skiles and James Dobbins, Rosannah's brother. Anna is the daughter of Henry, Sr. and sister to the Henry who married Rosannah Dobbins. Catherine was born 3/3/1764 in Rowan County, NC. I hope this helps somewhat. I have my lineage through Thomas to the present. Henry, St. also had a daughter Catherine, born in 1738. ----- Original Message ----- From: "KAREN THOMAS" To: Sent: Sunday, June 05, 2005 1:06 PM Subject: Dobbin/s, Skiles/Skyles and Cowen/an--BSkinner where are you? > > > KAREN THOMAS wrote:Date: Sun, 5 Jun 2005 09:50:58 -0700 (PDT) > From: KAREN THOMAS > To: DOBBIN-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [DOBBIN] Dobbin/s, Skiles and Cowen/an--BSkinner where are you? > > > > I am looking for a Skiles/Skyles researcher who has a list of the descendants of Henry Skiles/Skyles Sr. and Jr. In particular, I am looking for somebody by the name of BSkinner who had done some research on the subject ancestors listed above. > > Several of us Cowan descedants are looking for the wife of John Cowen/an who died in 1788 or 1789. I am showing a date of 24 March 1789 in Rowan County, North Carolina--but I can't figure out where I got that date now. I'd have to go back through my notes and see where I came up with 24 March 1789--I'm sure another researcher provided that date. > > I also received this some time back from Steve Cowan in 2001, and I believe it is also published in Fleming's book, Cowan's of County Down. Don't know how many he had of legal age. John Cowan Jr. was guardian of Alexander Cowan. David Forster took Isaac Cowan. William Cowan took Joseph Skiles Cowan and Thomas Cowan took Esther Cowan." > > Okay, so my question for the Skiles/Skyles researchers....what do you have on Catherine Skiles Cowen? Does anybody have a birth date for her? I have she died some time in 1778, date provided by BSkinner. She was the daughter of Henry Skiles Jr. and Rosanna Dobbens/Dobbins. > > Any information you can provide would be very much appreciated.
