Is there any way to find out the results of the DNA testing on the various Cowan lines? Is it published or compiled on line or on RootsWeb? In general does it refute or prove much of what was in The Cowans from County Down? I am researching the James Jones Cowan( b. 1812, d. 1898) and Sarah Ann Cook(b. 1816, d.1886) line who, I think, are descendants of James Cowan, Sr. and Hannah Woods. Most of my information about the family came from other people's research and I am not sure how much of it is accurate. Most of my information came from the book, History of the Cowan Family with descendants of Dr. James Jones Cowan and Sarah Ann Cook Cowan. Helen Leino

I have a very limited Cowan connection. I have seen a few others mention it on the list, but only with questions. I must admit I have not been extremeley active in pursuing it as I have so many lines to work on :-), but would love any information that anyone might have. My ancestor is Mary Cowan married to James Darwin. They are both supposed to be from Louisa County Virginia and both died in York, South Carolina. Births are 19 June 1744 (James) and 14 September 1746 (Mary). They died in 1825 (James) and 1818 (Mary). I descend from their daughter, Jane, who married Thomas Petty. I do understand that the Darwin family has more information and sources on these than I have at present. I am working on obtaining some of that. Anyone else on this line? Lucy Peterson

HI: I'm searching for WILSON COWEN of Tenn., born in 1820, who married ELIZA, born in 1824. Wilson's granddaughter, ADA BOWMAN, was my great-grandmother. I have traced Wilson to Brown County, Ohio, after 1850. I'd like to know where he came from in Tenn., and what happened to all of the family members after 1870. They disappear from the Brown Co. Census after that year, that is, all but Eliza Cowen (Emmons), who raised Ada after her mother Elizabeth Bowman died in 1870. Wilson and Eliza moved to BROWN CO., OHIO sometime after 1843. I believe Eliza died and that Wilson remarried MIHALY HIGHWARDEN, probably of Brown Co. Well that was a good round of posting, but with 220 we are still short a few. Now that is not counting the ones that I know well. <g> The postings that you have made have been very good and I hope that you have had some people contacting you other than me. It is very hard for me to keep your line in my head when I don't see it often enough to know who you are. I will be out of town for a short RV trip, but will be checking the mail some while I am gone. Keep up the good work so I will have some things to read. If we don't post then we don't know if the list can help us. I know that when I look at COWAN, I read every one that I find and sometime it just might be your line. I also look at all of the other spellings. The DNA testing has been very rewarding. We have samples from the 4 Immigrant Brothers, 7 Immigrant Brothers, Samuel and Sarah Keith Cowan, William and Jane Walker Cowan, James and Hannah Woods Cowan plus some lines that have made their own cluster that I never dreamed would match the way that they did!!!! As I said, it has been very rewarding. Even if your line has been tested, you still need to have a Cowan cousin that is kin to you to be tested to verify that you are in fact the correct line. Now that sounds okay in my head, but I am not sure that it came out exactly as I desired. <g> We actually have a Cowan male that matched a state side group that still lives in Ireland. We have a gap of 82 years to fill in to connect them. We have matches with people that actually know where in Scotland that there line started from. We have two that have matched that are of the I Haplogroup which is true Viking - this I never thought. We have some that have had the R1a Haplogroup verified and the match with that Haplogroup held. All this DNA is considered Genetic Genealogy. Hope that all of you that can have worked the on-line census over and printed off the ones that are your family. There are ways to save them and then select the actual census for printing so that you do not have all of the black area that uses so much ink. Remember to document your sources. Also please go back to the older research that has been tucked away since it was not in agreement with Cowans From County Down - there may be leads there. DNA has sawed off branches and connected others. Hunt that cousin and get him tested!!!! Thanks again for posting who you are researching. I had the same thing happen--Cowan to Cowen and back to Cowan. Joseph Skiles Cowen's neadstone reads with an "E"....evidently his children all disagreed with the spelling and said it should have been spelled with an "A". Joseph Skiles Cowan is John Cowan's son, John Cowan is very probably a son of David Cowan (one of the four immigrant brother's.) No real proof has been found yet to substantiate this information, but rather was a "process of elimination" which was assumed by Reverend Fleming in his book. I tend to agree because of research I have done myself and places and dates and names match on various sources and the Cowan's close proximity to the Graham's. Does anyone have any knowledge of Hugh Cowan b. 1870 New Kilpatrick Scotland and died in 1932. His parents were Andrew Cowan and Margaret Walker. He married Jessie Shearer b. 1870, Glasgow, Scotland; died Battle Creek MI 1936. Jessie immigrated to the US in 1891 and married Hugh in Detroit MI in 1892. Am not sure when Hugh came to the US. They had 3 children that I know of - Mamie (Mary?), Grace and Richard. Mamie and Richard moved to southern part of California in the 1930's. Does this ring a bell for any Cowan family out there? Both the children of Mathew Cowan and Catherine Trousdale. This would make Joseph Cowan and Jane S. Trousdale first cousins. It is believed that Mathew Cowan is the son of Ned Cowan the long hunter. Now how does Ned Cowan connect to the seven brother immigrant group. Ronda

Rhonda, I have Delia Trousdale and Jane S. Trousdale listed as sisters to my ancestor Matthew Cowan Trousdale and children of Elizabeth M. Cowan and John Trousdale. Many of this Trousdale/Cowan families ended up in Bell, Milam and Lampasas County Texas. I found Robert Lee Cowan and his sister Roxie Cowan Perryman living in either Bell of Milam County in the 1900 Census near some of my Cowan family. I had been trying to figure out who this Roxy Cowan was for a long time. I have another Roxy Cowan who married Bushnell Bigham in Bell County but she isn't the same one as Roxy Perryman. The Bell County and Milam County borders were moved many years later so it is difficult to tell where the boundary was at the time. Matthew Cowan Trousdale and his wife, Louisa Bush are both buried in the Kempner Cemetery in Lampasas County, Texas. Their daughter, Malissia Lee Trousdale married my great grandfather Robert J. Cowan in 1872 in Bell County, TX. She died at the young age of 27 in 1883. Their daughter, Leona Cowan is my grandmother. By the way, did you hear about the couple in Tennessee who are restoring the original homeplace of Ned Cowan? He passed the place on to his son, Matthew and it remained in the family until the current family bought it. I have the newspaper article if you haven't seen it.
