    1. Catherine Skiles and John Cowen/an--BSkinner where are you?

    3. I am looking for a Skiles/Skyles researcher who has a list of the descendants of Henry Skiles/Skyles Sr. and Jr. In particular, I am looking for somebody by the name of BSkinner who had done some research on the subject ancestors listed above. Several of us Cowan descedants are looking for the wife of John Cowen/an who died in 1788 or 1789. I am showing a date of 24 March 1789 in Rowan County, North Carolina--but I can't figure out where I got that date now. I'd have to go back through my notes and see where I came up with 24 March 1789--I'm sure another researcher provided that date. I also received this some time back from Steve Cowan in 2001, and I believe it is also published in Fleming's book, Cowan's of County Down. He stated: "I have not even been able to get a middle initial. I do know that he (John Cowan Sr) died in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1788. I know he died leaving 4 minor children. Don't know how many he had of legal age. John Cowan Jr. was guardian of Alexander Cowan. David Forster took Isaac Cowan. William Cowan took Joseph Skiles Cowan and Thomas Cowan took Esther Cowan." Okay, so my question for the Skiles/Skyles researchers....what do you have on Catherine Skiles Cowen? Does anybody have a birth date for her? I have she died some time in 1778, date provided by BSkinner. She was the daughter of Henry Skiles Jr. and Rosanna Dobbens/Dobbins. Any information you can provide would be very much appreciated. I really need some clarification of Catherine Skiles/Skyles....and more information on her. Much thanks, Karen Cowan Thomas

    1. RE: [COWAN-L] More John Cowen and Skyles family connections -- N. C. Deeds
    2. Terry Cowan
    3. Karen, A couple of thoughts on the Cowan-Skiles relationship. 1. I don't think Catherine Skiles Cowan could be the wife of John Cowan who died in NC in 1788. Catherine Skiles, daughter of Henry Skiles, Sr., was married to a Cowan at the time of her father's death in 1750. We have no way of knowing just how old Catherine was, but she could have been anywhere from 15 or 16 on the low end, to around 30 on the high end, at that time. John Cowan of NC died 38 years later, in 1788, leaving several minor children. By that time, Catherine would have been anywhere from 53 to 68. Though possible, I suppose, it just doesn't seem to fit for her to have several minor children at that age. I believe there were numerous Cowan/Skiles/Dobbins relationships. I believe that John Cowan's wife was probably a Skiles, but not Catherine. 2. And on the DNA stuff, I am certainly no expert on this, but my understanding is that the study merely shows that there is a very close relationship between Joseph Skiles Cowan and the family of John Cowan of the "4 brothers." My DNA markers line up with those of known descendents of John Cowan, as well. But this doesn't prove that my William Cowan was a son of the immigrant John Cowan. It does, however, place him within the "4 brothers" group. My William--from the DNA study alone--could just as easily be a son of immigrant David Cowan and my DNA markers still line up with those of the John Cowan descendants. So, the DNA study doesn't pin your Joseph Skiles Cowan to the John Cowan line, but does show a close relationship. My theory is that John Cowan (d. 1788), father of Joseph Skiles Cowan, was a son of the immigrant David Cowan. Anyway, I am certainly enjoying the ongoing dialogue about these early "4 brothers" Cowan relationships! C. Deeds Laura, Per the subject of the original e-mail: "More John Cowen and Skyles family connections -- N.C. Deeds"--I didn't see that e-mail--must have missed it (unless it was the one I sent out some time back). I had titled my e-mail "John Cowen finally has a wife!" I had always "assumed" that John Cowen's wife must have been a Skiles because of the middle name of "Joseph Skiles Cowan" And now, with the DNA testing done, we also can finally link our Joseph Skiles Cowen to John Cowan, one of the 4 immigrant brothers. Anyway, those notes I sent out a while back were, again, as follows: Scroll down below to Catherin Skiles COWEN who married John Cowen and died in 1778--would have made John Cowen's children ORPHANED in 1788 when he died in Rowan County, North Carolina! BSkinner had this on line all the time!!!! (Well, at least since it was edited in 1999)These Skiles definitely appear to be related to the Dobbins and Cowan's in our line! 3) Henry Skiles Sr., son of Thomas Skiles Jr. He was born in old Somerset county, Maryland in about 1699 and later moved, after his father's death in 1719 to Leacock Township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with his brother, William Skiles. Thomas Skiles Jr. died without a will. Henry Skiles Sr. owned 600 acres of land in Leacock Township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Henry married first Alchey and then Catherine and he had the following children with Alchey: Capt. William Skiles (Freeman. a single man above the age of 21 years, of Leacock twp, 1758). He sold land in Hanover twp. Feb 4, 1768. Served as Capt. of militia, Lancaster Co., Rev. War; (4) Henry Skiles II, born in about 1722, and married Rosannah Dobbins and died in 1779; Peter Skiles born about 1721 married Alice and died in 1755 and then she married John Carson; Herman Skiles who died December 1798 in W. Cain. Chester Co.; sold land in Leacock Township, next to Peter Ritter. 7 July 1763 and was living in W. Cain. Chester Co. by 1774. died in 1792; Elizabeth Skiles who married Peter Ritter. son of Conrad Ritter. he died in 1778; Catherine Skiles who married John Cowen and had eight children and lived in Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, died in 1778; Ann Elizabeth Skiles who married James Dobbins in January 1748 in Lancaster County. In 1750 they removed to North Carolina and settled in the Parish of St Luke, then in Anson County, now in Rowan County. They were members of the Thyatira Presbyterian Church, where James was directing elder and she died in November 1789; James Skiles born in 1737 in Lancaster County Pensylvania; Margaret Skiles born in 1740 in Lancaster County Pennsylvania and; John Skiles who married Mary Henderson, sister of Mathew Henderson and died in spring of 1767 in Leacock Townehip, Lancaster County. Pennsylvania; Henry Skiles. Sr. died in the spring of 1750 in Leacock Township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Did you receive this from me? I had also found the Will where Henry Skiles' Will left everything to Catherine Cowen, and I found other Skiles/Skyles documents where John Cowen was mentioned in them. I found the Skiles Will/s posted on line by doing a search in Yahoo. I still need to contact the county it was filed in and verify the document. It's on my "list of things to do!" that is a mile long. Hope this helps. Love, Karen PS: Laura, enjoy your trip to Myrtle Beach! Laura Cowan Cooper <dacooper@usit.net> wrote: No rush on the copies. 3. Terry, Thank you for your input, however, here's how I reason this all out! Please let me know if you concur. Catherine Skiles Cowen died in 1778, 10 years BEFORE John Cowen (who died in 1788) (BSkinner stated Catherine Skiles Cowen died in 1778--hence that is the date I am calculating from--I do not know her birth year for sure) If she was married in 1750, as you say that she married to a Cowan at the time of her father's death in 1750, and if she were 15 or 16 then (possibly born 1735 or 1736), she could have been 43/44 years old at the time of her death--and if one is having 5 (possibly eight) children, they could have been spread out over quite a few years--some say she had eight children??? ...It would be quite possible for her to have been John Cowen's wife. Now, IF she had children late in life (say she had her last when she was 40'ish, it is quite possible she left very young children when she died. Joseph Skiles Cowan was born in 1777. She predeceased John Cowen by 10 years.... meaning that when she died, Joseph Skiles Cowen/an would have only been about ONE YEAR OLD. Therefore, when John Cowen/an died, he still could have had children who were not yet 18 years of age and they would have been "orphaned", not just because women didn't have any rights to raise their children without appointed MALE guardians (as one researcher pointed out to me), but because Catherine Skiles Cowen was already deceased. Joseph Skiles Cowen/an was born in 1777--and would have been 1 at the time of his mother's death. AND, that would make him 11 at the time of his father's death in 1788--and would have been at the age to be considered an "orphan" when John Cowen died, as well as his siblings, John Cowen Jr., Esther, Isaac and Alexander. (per the document reproduced in Fleming's book showing that Joseph Cowen/an had William Cowan appointed as his guardian). I DON'T know WHO THAT William Cowan decends from--possibly a brother of our John Cowen's, an uncle. If ANYBODY has any birth dates for these other siblings, I SURE would like to know what they are! If I remember correctly, Esther also got a guardian...and one other...but I've gone brain dead on which one...I think it was Isaac. John Cowan Jr. and Alexander may have been older and not put into guardianship. I agree that David Cowan (one of the 4 immigrant brothers) was VERY PROBABLY John Cowan's father (mainly because of Fleming's book and his reasoning and process of elimination). We now know for sure that Joseph Skiles Cowan has a PERFECT DNA match with at least one of the 4 Immigrant Brothers...therefore, we are definitely related to the 4 Immigrant brothers, Hugh, William, John and David. When Henry Skiles died in 1750, he left EVERYTHING to Catherine Cowen. Catherine Cowen and John Cowen were also mentioned in other documents together. In conclusion, I'm going to stick to my guns and say that I truly believe that Catherine Skiles Cowen WAS the wife of John Cowen (the John Cowen who died in 1788) and Catherine Skiles Cowen was the mother of Joseph Skiles Cowen/an. Does any of the above make sense to anybody? I hope I'm not just being stubborn but rather logical in my reasoning and careful in my research. Let's keep talking!!!!! (I was only 14mths old) and mum died 10 Nov 1979 Bundaberg Queensland, Australia On Thomas and Margaret’s Marriage Certificate it states his father was John Cowan. In 1847 they did not put the mothers name on Certificates. On his death certificate it states his father was William and mother Agnes Tringle. This information was given by his son-in-law, so I consider the information given by Thomas himself at his marriage would be correct. I have found one other brother of Thomas’s coming to Australia and that was John Cumming Cowan, who left London on 28 July 1909 and arrived at Mackay, Queensland, Australia on 10 Oct 1909. They were nominated by Robert’s wife. They did not stay long in Queensland, and eventually moved to Sydney, News South Wales Australia. I have made contact with one of his descendents. I would love to find descendents from some of the other family members – just as we all would on our particular lines. 3. Laura, Per the subject of the original e-mail: "More John Cowen and Skyles family connections -- N.C. 3. Yes, I have been quiet recently. Bear and I picked up stakes in California and moved to Arizona where we bought 2.04 acres and are going to build a house on it. Moving was an ordeal to say the least. We had a 28' trailer loaded to the brim and had a driver bring it to Arizona and also we brought back two 16 foot trailer loads on our own. Kimberly (my daughter) and her boyfriend, Bruce, plus my son David and his friend Armen helped us do all the heavy moving. Well, anyway, here it is 4 weeks on Saturday since we arrived in Arizona with all our worldly belongings and we are just finally getting settled in to our Mobile Home (our temporary dwelling). Bear worked on drawing up the house plans and as of today, we had the plans approved by the Camp Verde Planning Department and we purchased our building permit. So we're ready to break ground as soon as we get the land graded a bit more to make room on the top of our little hill overlooking our little green Valley to build our home....a 1500 square foot 2 bedroom, 2 bath, with a large 4 carport covering and attached "hobby" room....half for me and half for Bear, so I can have a great place to work on my stained glass windows. The past couple of days we have been busy straightening out the temporary tool shed getting Bear's tools are organized so he can begin building. So, yes, we have been very busy. I finally was able to dig out all my family history stuff and have the boxes in the house now. I haven't received the most recent stuff Florence sent yet. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of those papers. She did send me a package earlier, some time before we left California, but since March 1st, we've been busy running back and forth between California and Arizona to purchase the land and close on it, and then back to California to sell the Duplex there--and that was quite a job too--had to put a lot of stuff in storage there so we could make the Duplex look bigger to market it for the Real Estate sale. We got about $30K more than the asking price--there was a regular bidding war over the period of the 4 days it took us to actually get an offer. We listed at $675K and got $705K for it....took the money and ran!!!! I've never been so busy as I have been since I "retired". I don't see any letup. I try to read my e-mail every so often so I can keep up with everything. I sent you an e-mail earlier, when you were doing all the Cowan Roll Call--and got an e-mail from you saying you were going on a RV trip. Hope you had a great vacation. I'm hoping to get back into the research mode again, or the writing a book mode soon. I've gathered loads and loads of information on the period history from Scotland to Ireland to the Colonies and am anxious to get it organized and begin writing my book....of course, dropping in names, dates, English, Scotch, Irish and US History, and family lore stories where they fit in my little "history book". I found some really great references--books, maps, Goodspeed historical papers, titles, deeds, census records, have gotten pictures of various Cowan relatives, pictures of homesteads, marriage certs, bible records, headstones, etc., etc., and it should make quite a nice book by the time I get done. Now all I have to do is find the time to get with it. Do keep in touch. I may be busy for a couple more weeks before I have time again to do more research. I did see in the DNA testing recently that Joseph Skiles Cowan and John Cowan, one of the 4 brother immigrants, matched EXACTLY. THAT was great news. I shared that information with Florence and copied her on the site to go to to see it...plus included the DNA testing document in an e-mail to her just the other day. I think she was REALLY excited about thet because she replied with WOW! By the way, the DNA testing proves that John Cowan and Joseph Skiles Cowan matched exactly....but does that mean that John Cowan was Joseph Skiles Clowan's uncle or his father if the match was exact? I'll talk to you again soon. Keep me posted of any new developments in the Cowan research and also, take care of yourself and write when you have time. Love, Karen Cowan Thomas 2320 N. 3. Roll Call: The ancestors that I am concrned with are Mary and Martha Cowan who married Hugh and Joseph Dickson as shown on the following chart: Descendants of Andrew Cowan 1 Andrew Cowan 1741 - 1799 . +Mary Walker 1735 - 1786 .... 2 Martha (Ann?) "Patsy" Cowan 1771 - 1840 ........ +Joseph Dickson 1760 - 1839 .... 2 Mary Cowan - 1808 ........ +Hugh Dickson .........and others From well documented family history, it has long been known that Joseph Dickson married Martha Cowan. They were in Montgomery Co.,TN abt 1800 but when and where they married was not known. Deed records say he was "of Orange Co.,NC." The relation of Hugh to Joseph is not known but Hugh is a frequent name in the descendants of Joseph and in a nearby Dickson family in Dickson Co.,TN. Joseph's parents have not been identified. From this mailing list or from GenForum I found that Joseph married Martha in in Jefferson Co.,TN on 9 Feb 1797 and Hugh married Mary around that time also. They are probably the Joseph and Martha that came to Montgomery Co. I have very limited access to early East Tennessee Records and have not been able to find much about these families on the internet. Can anyone give me information about these families? Thank you Al Turman

    1. Roll Call
    2. I have documented the following information for my line. 1. William Riley Cowan married Zillah Louisa Mayberry and had son Jacob Jasper. 2. Jacob married Mary Jane Davis and had a daughter Rachel J. 3. Rachel married N. F. Baucom and had a daughter Lucille. 4. Lucille married Everette Wagers (also spelled Wages) and had a daughter and named her Patricia. That's me. What I don't have any documentation for is that William Riley was the son of Riley and Phoebe Acree Cowan, although I don't doubt that he was. Riley Cowan is suppose to be the son of Samuel and Sarah Margaret Keith. I did read somewhere a long time ago that Margaret was not the middle name of Sarah. Pat
