    1. List Manager Address Change
    2. Laura Cowan Cooper
    3. Let's see if my changes have worked. When an address changes, there are a lot of places to make the changes. <g> Please note the change in my e-mail address - this is the first change that I have had in my e-mail since 1996 and can you guess what a mess that will be before I get it all posted!!! I told my husband that the only way I would change would be for high speed and it had to be the fastest that we could get. Well, when we are done, it will be a wireless network with a lot of new toys. To date, my machine is not set up, but it is on the task list. Thanks for all of the good posts on your family lines - it helps me to keep you straight and the more I see posts from you the better my eyes are when I am out there researching. 1. Cowan--Sellers Land Transaction
    2. Dana Majernik
    3. A while back, someone posted information about a land transaction that took place in Baltimore, Maryland between a John Cowan & a Robert Sellers. I was wondering if that person knows anything about the family of the said, Robert Sellers or the family of this said, John Cowan? My reason for asking is that I descend from the Sollars/Sollers/Sellers family as well the Cowan/Cowen/Cowans family. The original Sollers/Sollars/Sellers family immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland and supposedly this is where my Cowan family originally came from. This past weekend I visited The Old School Baptist Church Cemetery, located in Springfield Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Buried in that cemetery were a set of grandparents whose names were written on the headstones as "James and Sarah Cowans." In the 1850 federal census for Clay Twp., Huntingdon County, PA for this family, James "Cowen" is listed as 56, Sarah as 54, and living in the household with them is a son James age 17, a daughter Ann age 20, and a woman named Ann Sollars age 62. When I visited the cemetery this weekend, buried right beside James and Sarah Cowans were two women by the names of: Matilda A. Sollers, and Nancy Sollers. This leads me to at least several speculations: 1) that Sarah Cowan may have been a sister of Ann, Matilda, and Nancy; 2) it is also a possibility that Ann Sollars was a sister of James Cowan and that Matilda and Nancy were her daughters; 3) Matilda "A." Sollers went by, perhaps, a middle name of "Ann." Does anyone know these people. Incidentally, the Cowans children went by the name of Cowan/Cowen not Cowans. I have a death certificate in which Sarah and James' daughter, Sophia was listed as Sophia "Cowen." But, Sophia's brother spelled his name, James "Cowan." About 12-15 miles south, on Route 522 (not far from Meadow Gap Rd. where the Old School Baptist Church is located) near Burnt Cabins, Dublin Twp./Ayr, is located an entrance to Cowans Gap State Park. It was supposed to have been settled by Major Samuel "John" Cowan and his wife Mary Mueller who he met in Boston, MA while serving as a British Officer during the revolutionary war. Samuel Cowan was said to have gone by his middle name of "John" Cowan. Does anyone know the names of the children of Samuel "John" Cowan and Mary? Hoping this rings a bell with someone.

Surnames: Cowan Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/DMQ.2ACIB/1123.1 Message Board Post: Roy - I just looked up this family last week. Small world, but you have a live living Cowan male from this line and that alone could solve which Cowan line in Abbeville you should be tracking down!!!!! We have a Cowan DNA Project through http://www.FamilyTreeDNA.com - the testing will tell you all if you connect to one of the already tested Cowan males which might narrow down your search. I know that it would cross off one line in that area or match your line to them. This is exciting news for researchers of this line that did not know there were still living Cowan males. We know that there were several different DNA Cowan lines in that area at the same time and if we could get samples from each of the different lines, we might be able to sort them better. I have pointed out your post to another Cowan researcher from this line and will follow up to make sure that you all get in touch with each other. He was out of town, but I expect to hear from him when he returns. I do for a fact know that this is also his line and from the information that you have posted, feel sure that you all will be having a lot of information to share. Good posts like what you made get action. Posts to this list are sent to Cowan-L@rootsweb.com which is the Cowan Surname List. When you look for this family in the census look for Sheppard mis-spelled with only one "p" if I remember correctly. I have pulled a lot of the census for this family and would be glad to send them to you if you do not have them already. I am very interested in this Cowan line - I think that sorting them out might help connect some other groups.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Cowan Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DMQ.2ACIB/1123 Message Board Post: Looking for parents of Samuel J. Cowan (72) in the 1850 Abbeville County, SC Census. His 1851 will names wife Sarah (Jane), son Robert Simpson Cowan, son Sheppard Grance Cowan, apparent daughter Amanda Tolbert, son Wade Cowan, son William Nixon Cowan, son Edmund Cowan, son Charles Wesley Cowan, and apparent daughter Mary Jane Cason. The Samuel Cowan/Cowen name first appears in the 1810 Abbeville census but there are two of that name with one listed as "SR" but they are both in the same age bracket (26-44). In the 1820 census both are enumerated and both are still in the 26-44 age bracket which would seem to rule out a father/son kinship. Only one Sam Cowan appears on the 1830 and 1840 census which is likely the same individual as in 1850. There are two additional Samuel Cowans found in county records--a Samuel Cowans mentioned in the 1792 Abbeville County will of John Cowans and an 1827 Tax Petition by a Captain Samuel Cowan. I have the line from Samuel J. Cowan (1850) to son Edmund to son Samuel Jordan Cowan (McDuffie/Lincoln Counties, GA) to son Samuel Jordan Cowan who ultimately settled in Jefferson County, GA. His living son, also Samuel Jordan Cowan, currently lives in Bulloch County, GA. Any help in sorting out these Samuel Cowans (1792-1820) would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Roll call (if it's not too late) and Forrest connection
    2. jim havron
    3. I realized today that I had not gotten around to posting my known (more or less) Cowan ancestry. I also realized that I never got around to answering the person who e-mailed me asking about the family celationship to General N. B. Forrest (who is referred to as "kin" to Maj. Cowan in several biographies), and since I don't recall who it was, I'll post it. The ancestry is first, so you can ignore the other if you are so minded. The name of our progenitor comes from old family letters from and two various cousins. It fits most of what I have read from the rest of you folk, but I am open to anything that suggests another direction. Regardless, he is supposed to be the Samuel Cowan that married Ann Walker. His son, my ancestor, married a Walker that was supposedly either a neice or cousin. (This is the family in the letter quoted in P. D. Cowan's little book, Shadow on Chilhowee.)The Houstons and Walkers not only show up in or line periodically, but in the Montgomery line that heavily intermarried with ours. (Its almost one of those "I'm my own grandpa" type of things.) The line, then is: 1.Samuel Cowan m. Anne Walker in Augusta Co. VA 2.John Cowan b. Augusta Co. VA (?) d. abt. 1770 + Mary Walker b. Augusta Co. VA bef. 1770 3.James Cowan b. Abt. 1770 d. 1814-1815 + Mary “Polly” Weir Montgomery b. 1773 d. aft 1850 4.Rev. Samuel Montgomery Cowan b. 1801 d. 1881 in Tullahoma, Coffee Co.,TN + Nancy Coker Clements b. 1811 in Lincoln Co. TN d. 1900 in Tullahoma, Coffee Co.,TN (They were married just outside Huntsville, Madison Co., AL 5. Dr. James Benjamin Cowan (only child) b. 1831 in Lincoln Cnty., TN d. 1909 in Tullahoma, Coffee Co., TN + Lucy Caroline Robinson b. 1834 Madison Cnty. AL d. 1918 in Tullahoma, Coffee Co., TN (They were married in Huntsville, Madison Co., AL) 6. Minnie Horton Cowan b. 1869 d. 1968 in Nashville, TN. + Tyre Algers Havron b. 1860 in Dade Co. GA d. 1939 in Nashville, TN. 7. James Cowan Havron b. 1908 in Tullahoma, Coffee Co., TN d. (says “I’m not half dead yet!”) + Jane Isabelle Bright b. 1910 in Nashville, TN d. 1983 in Nashville, TN 8. James Tyre Havron b. 1932 in Nashville, TN + Barbara Burt Eagan b. 1937 in Nashville, TN 9. James (Jim) Tyre Havron, Jr. b. 1960 in Nashville, TN + Roseanne Carole Rigsby b. 1956 in Greenville, Muhlenberg Co., KY As t the rest, here goes. The relationship of Forrest to the Cowans is through his wife, Mary Ann (Montgomery) Forrest. Her mother was Elizabeth (Cowan) Montgomery, sister of Rev. Samuel Montgomery Cowan (who was Mary Ann's gardian at the time of her marriage.) Elizabeth's husband, Mary Ann's father, was William H. Montgomery, who turns out to be first cousin to his wife and Rev. Samuel. (Their mother, Polly Weir (Montgomery)Cowan, was a sister to Hugh, William's father.) SO... Mary Ann Montgomery was Rev. Samuel's ward, his neice and 1st cousin, once removed. She was the first and second cousin to Dr./Maj. James B. Cowan, Forrest's surgeon. This does not take into account some other confusing connections between the Cowans and Montgomerys, including cases where folk married the surviving siblings of their deceased spouses. BTW- does the type of testing being done for DNA alow for use of hair or other such stuff? I was once told that there was some hair of my g-g-grandfather in possession of a cousin. He was an only child, and though he had three sons, 2 had no known children and one only daughters. There are no direct descendents that go entirely through the male lines. Just curious. I really don't have much information so this may be a longshot. His given names were William Vernon and he was born in March in Detroit, MI. He was married a couple times and through one marriage he had a daughter named Roxanne and then he married Yolanda Rae Yack and had Kimberly Ann and Dawn Marie. Kimberly and Dawn were also adopted out and Kimberly's name was changed to Kris Louis Smith (not sure why the change). William Vernon Cowen/Cowan/Schram's siblings were Richard (known as Dick) and Nancy and Ernie. Nancy and Ernie died of cancer. That's really all i have...any info would be helpful if anyone knows anything. Thanks! Jessica Napp8483@yahoo.com

    1. Dobbin/s, Skiles/Skyles and Cowen/an, Graham--Catherine NOT married to John Cowen/an
    2. KAREN THOMAS
    3. Thank you Claude--I would love to share/verify information with you on the Skiles: Okay, I've got it figured out now. I was confused about the will of Henry Skiles Sr leaving everything to Catherine Cowen. There WAS a Catherine Skiles Cowan who married William Cowan who would have fit this time frame. (marriage about 1750) This is the Catherine Skiles daughter of Henry Skiles SR who died in 1750 and left everything to his daughter Catherine Cowen. His daughter would NOT be the Catherine who could have married John Cowan. So it's back to the drawing board--still no wife for John Cowen. I thought I had it there. Once Claude provided a birth date of 1738...and she would have only been 12 years old in 1750 when she got married--it was back to the drawing board again. I went back to my family history and started checking out Catherine Skyles and found out that the one born in 1738 was married to William Cowan. (She still would have only been 12 years old....but maybe the date 1738 isn't right). Once I realized there were two Catherine Skyles it made better sense. The other Catherine Skyles born in 1764 (daughter of Henry Skiles Jr) would have been a candidate also....but nothing says she married a Cowan. HOWEVER, if you look at the deed below....there you'll see JOHN COWAN and HENRY SKILES JR linked up. Back to the elusive question of WHO IS JOHN COWAN'S WIFE? Was she one of Henry Skiles Jr's daughters? I'm convinced she must have been a SKILES....or why would Joseph have the middle name of SKILES? Why was John Cowen mentioned in the deed below--was he a son-in-law? Is he my! John Cowen? My John Cowen was on or near Second Creek, Rowan County, North Carolina. "ROWAN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEED ABSTRACTS 1762 - 1772 6:313,314. Robert Harden to Hugh Jenkins for 285 pds 597 A on Second Crk adj the Great Road by the White Glade adj Daniel Hare, John Long & Henry Skyle granted 22 Feb 1759. 19 Sept 1765. John Braly, George Cowan. John Cowan." How many John Cowan's were there in North Carolina in 1759 to 1765? Darn those old Scotch/Irish ways of using the same names over and over and over again. And darn, so many Dobbins/Skiles/Cowan/Graham marriages going every which way for quite a few years because they were all neighbors. There must be a Skiles researcher out there somewhere who know's which Skiles woman married John Cowen. His wife HAS TO BE A SKILES!!!!! Anyway, Claude, thanks for your help (even if it did blow my theory right out of the water). 1. One More for the Cowan Roll Call
    2. Anita Cowan
    3. My oldest proven ancestor is James Cowan (1775-1841 VA-->East TN) Through my uncle's cooperation, I am participating in the Cowan DNA Project as #16796. The link to that info is www.familytreedna.com/public/Cowan/ If interested, please note that, to date there are no identical matches of other Cowan surnames in the project with my Cowan line. Interesting...and perplexing...since long before I was into genealogy, the story of immigrant brothers was passed down generation after generation in the oral history of my family. The "+" alongside selected names in bold print indicates my line. So I begin with what Penelope Allen said in Leaves From the Family Tree ( Southern Historical Press. 1982) "The Cowan family came to Tennessee from Virginia and settled first in Greene, Jefferson, and Knox counties. Several Cowan brothers located on the Hiwassee River when the Indian lands opened up.... And from the 1808 Rhea County Tax List " James Cowan, Joseph Cowan, and John Cowan were in the same tax district on the West Fork of Richland Creek (along the Hiwassee River) . James Cowan (b 1775 Augusta Co, VA- d 11 Dec 1841 Meigs Co, TN ) m. Elizabeth "Betsy"_____(b PA 1780; d 1859 Meigs Co, TN ) 1809- on petition to Governor re land warrants Involved in many land transactions recorded in Meigs/Rhea in period 1920-1840 n.d. On first jury, Meigs County 1829-1835 postmaster of "Cowansville" (now gone). Had a store. Part of the store ledger book is preserved in the TN Archives in Nashville. 1831 - county elections inspector, Meigs Co. 1836 - apptd commissioner to lay off Meigs Co into districts 1838- Trustee of Decatur Academy, Meigs County, TN Left detailed will listing wife Betsy, children, slaves, and properties including the Quyohnn farm (name might have been an approximation of the old Gaelic for Cowan, pronounced Cahoon or the Cherokee word "Aquone" used to designate Cherokee settlements in the region and translating in English to "resting place") The James Cowan home is still standing and in the national register of historic places. Children: Evalina Cowan m William Camp + William Wallace Cowan (1800-1854) m 1) Elizabeth Chattin (b - d 1837); 2) Isabella Cozby (b 1818- Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Cowan(1803-1881) m John L. (The Chattins came VA). in 1829 One daughter born before wife Elizabeth died. Child: Mary Catherine Cowan (b 1831; d __? ) m Wm. H. Hammond (Another researcher has worked up the Cowan-Hammond descendants) 1835- buys Ross reservation in McMinn Co. 1837 - clerks at the Indian Agency in Hiwassee Garrison. 1842 - had store in Calhoun, McMinn Co. In this year, the Hiwassee river bridge is completed and he moved to the opposite shore in Charleston, Bradley County, TN n.d. Apptd. commissioner to lay off Charleston, Bradley Co, TN 1845-1854 Cowan and Hammond Mercantile in Charleston, Bradley Co, TN m 2) Isabella Cozby in 1839 in Rhea County, TN. Isabella Cozby(b 1818 TN-d 1870 Bradley County, TN) is daughter of John Cozbyand Abigail McBee, granddaughter of Dr. James Cozby and Isabella Woods.. (Lots of history on James Cozby...Soldier in Am Rev, surgeon, saved Sevier, his sword on display in TN Archives, etc.) Five children: Sarah E.Cowan.(b 1840 - d__? )m. Thomas. L. Caldwell Martha Cowan (b 1842 - 1881) m. T.A. J. Bates (another researcher has all of these Cowan-Bates descendants) + William Wallace Cowan (b 1844 TN -d 1911 TX ) m. Anna Eliza Peace Ellen J. Cowan (b 1846 d 1903) m. Dr. Wallace N. Hogue Evaline Cowan (b 1848 - d 1854, soon after her father's death) His obituary reads "Departed this life at his residence in Charleston, on the 28th February, William W. Cowan, in the 54th year of his age. He was confined to his bed for three weeks with a severe attack of fever; and also a disease of the lungs, during which time he suffered extremely. He was a man of moral habits and unparalleled honesty; was looked upon as a pattern and guide to the rising generation, and his influence beamed forth shedding its bright rays far and wide. Most of his life was spent in the mercantile business. For the last two and a half years, he was agent for the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad Company at the Charleston Depot. He had many, very many, warm and zealous friends and few enemies. But he is gone to try the realities of another world, leaving a wife, six children, and many relations and friends to mourn their loss. (Source: Athens Post, 10 March 1854 and reprinted in the Journal of Tennessee History and Genealogy, Vol.4, No.3, 2000) William Wallace Cowan (b 1844 Bradley Co, TN; d 1911 Denton Co, TX) 26 July, 1861, two weeks after his 17th birthday, enlisted as a Private in Company "A" of the Tennessee 29th Infantry, CSA in Knoxville,TN Left service as a Corporal in October 1863 when his home county of Bradley changed from Confederate to Union control. Sometime after the war, he is "GTT"..."gone to Texas" .(His sisters had married and his mother had remarried, to John M. Bates of Bradley Co, TN) In Texas, he m Anna Eliza Peace ( b 1857 AL; d 1931 TX in 1875 They settled in Elizabethtown, Denton County, TX just above Elizabeth Creek. For those driving cattle northward along the eastern route of the Chisholm Trail, the creek was the first night's stop out of Fort Worth Served as Elizabethtown Justice of the Peace 1878-1880, operated an inn, and farmed several hundred acres. His acquaintances called him "Squire" and they said he stood around 6' 6". Although sold after his death, ,his home remained standing until the mid-1990s. Today, the Elizabethtown Cemetery, with a historical marker telling of its origin,is all that is left of the community. Bradley and Rhea counties in TN were the birthplace of many of those buried there. Children: Isabella "Belle" Cowan (b 1876 TX-1962 TX ) m John Hysinger Maud Cowan (b 1878 TX - died as infant) William Wallace Cowan (b 1880 TX - d 1950? Some researchers suggest that James was the son of Andrew Cowan of Greene Co, TN. I have not proved that yet. Some have connected this line back up through the Walkers. I have not seen documents to prove this either. Welcome all help and appreciate that given in the past. Anita Cowan Texas

    1. Catherine Skiles and John Cowen/an--BSkinner where are you?

    3. I am looking for a Skiles/Skyles researcher who has a list of the descendants of Henry Skiles/Skyles Sr. and Jr. In particular, I am looking for somebody by the name of BSkinner who had done some research on the subject ancestors listed above. Several of us Cowan descedants are looking for the wife of John Cowen/an who died in 1788 or 1789. I am showing a date of 24 March 1789 in Rowan County, North Carolina--but I can't figure out where I got that date now. I'd have to go back through my notes and see where I came up with 24 March 1789--I'm sure another researcher provided that date. I also received this some time back from Steve Cowan in 2001, and I believe it is also published in Fleming's book, Cowan's of County Down. He stated: "I have not even been able to get a middle initial. I do know that he (John Cowan Sr) died in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1788. I know he died leaving 4 minor children. Don't know how many he had of legal age. John Cowan Jr. was guardian of Alexander Cowan. David Forster took Isaac Cowan. William Cowan took Joseph Skiles Cowan and Thomas Cowan took Esther Cowan." Okay, so my question for the Skiles/Skyles researchers....what do you have on Catherine Skiles Cowen? Does anybody have a birth date for her? I have she died some time in 1778, date provided by BSkinner. She was the daughter of Henry Skiles Jr. and Rosanna Dobbens/Dobbins. Any information you can provide would be very much appreciated. I really need some clarification of Catherine Skiles/Skyles....and more information on her. Much thanks, Karen Cowan Thomas
