HI: I'm researching WILSON COWEN and his family. The 1840 U.S. Census says he was born in Tennessee. Wilson was married to ELIZA, possibly in TN, then they moved to BROWN CO., OHIO, after about 1843; some of their children were born there. I believe Eliza died after 1843 and that Wilson married MIHALY HIGHWARDEN, of Brown Co. around 1845. (1840 Census lists Abraham Highwarden (page 375?) lived in Byrd Township, Brown Co., Ohio in 1840: 1 male 24-36, 1 female under 10, 1 female 24-26.) Children in the Cowen household in 1850 (Brown Co., OH): Amanda, Elizabeth, Franklin, Julia, Sarah B., James By 1860, Wilson has married Mihaly. In 1870, son James is the head of the household, age 20. There's also Wilson's daughters Eliza and Elizabeth. Wilson and Mihaly are also living there plus Elizabeth's daughter Ada ("Edelia"). In 1880, there is no one left of the family in Brown Co. except a daughter, Eliza, who married William Emmons. The couple is raising Adelia, daughter of Eliza's sister Elizabeth (Bowman), who died Sept. 1870 in childbirth at age 29. I am tracing Wilson and family pre-1840, possibly in Tennessee, except I don't know which county to search. Also, I want to find out what happened to the rest of the family after 1870. The Cowens were African American. It looks as if they had been freed or were free-born, in Tennessee. Where could I find, say, emancipation papers, wills, deeds of Cowen slave owners? Which Tenn. counties have the most Cowen slave owners? Thanks, Kberry

AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA - CHALKLEY'S CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTCH-IRISH IN VA MARCH, 1770 (E). Cowan vs. Cowan.--Letter of Andrew Cowan to David Cowan, living in Albemarle, dated January 13, 1766. Loving Brother: This comes to let you know that we are all in good health at present, blessed be God for his mercies. Hoping that these few lines will find you in the same, I desire that you will go to James Cowan's and ask him for a note of mine that lies in my little trunk--a note of 2 pounds and five shillings, which William Teas(?) is due me against March 25, and get the money, for I am going to Carolina. I have nothing material to write you, but desire to be remembered to you all.

I'd like to suggest something to the group. There is something called the Sorenson Molecular Geneology Foundation. There are a couple of things that makes this Geneological DNA unique: 1) they use all of the DNA information, not just Y-chromosone or maternal mitochondrial DNA, 2) therefore, they need every one to send in their DNA, not just men, 3) It's FREE, they'll send you a free kit and will analyze it for free. However, you won't get any info back from them. Anyone can search their database for free by using their genetic markers, but you'll need to find out your genetic markers from some other company. To request a free kit go to: http://smgf.org/request_a_free_kit.html The non-profit Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) is building the world's largest database of correlated genetic and genealogical data. Our database uses sophisticated DNA analysis to link individuals together, while maintaining strict confidentiality of participants' information. The SMGF database pursues the following objectives: Build the public database by collecting DNA samples and corresponding genealogies from throughout the world Make the information useful to genealogists by allowing public access to the database while maintaining the privacy of contributors Help people get past “brick walls” within their genealogies by providing information about specific ancestors to whom they are biologically related Create analysis tools to enable genetics to be used in new ways for genealogical research DNA samples with associated four-generation pedigree charts have already been collected from over 50,000 volunteers by SMGF. Up to 170 genetic markers (specific regions of DNA) are analyzed for each individual. The corresponding pedigree chart is also extended as far as genealogical databases allow; extended pedigrees currently include over one million ancestral records. The database will be released in stages. When each portion is ready for public release, free access will be available through the SMGF Website. The first database release, comprising paternal-line (Y chromosome) genetic data and corresponding genealogies, includes data for more than 12,000 individuals and hundreds of thousands of ancestors. SMGF also continually conducts research into new methods of using DNA analysis for genealogical research. A significant focus of our research is to identify and trace ancestral origins, with genetic identity defined by factors of demographic separation as well as by time period. We are also researching ways to use the inheritance models of various types of genetic data to trace different genealogical lines. We are experimenting with new genetic clustering algorithms, the statistical reconstruction of ancestral trees, the inference of ancestral genetic signatures, and the inference of surname based on paternal-line DNA. Please tell everyone you know. David Sigmon
