That then appears to place another Cowan line in the Abbeville, SC area, but much later. I think we are up to maybe 4 different lines if not more. Interesting information - thanks for taking the time to post it for the boards.

Spouse, Elizabeth Reid--or Read in some cases). They emigrated first to Canada (1853?) and then to Fort Gratiot (Port Huron) in 1964. A number of their children (including my ggrandfather Edward) settled later in the Detroit area. There's quite a lot of data on ancestry.com about this line posted by two distant cousins I discovered on-line. Best of luck!

Please let me know if you have any information. Thanks!
My gggrandmother was Betty Cowan Holt and I am seeking information on her family who I believe lived in and around Hays County Texas. Any information on her husband Franklin (Frank) Holt would be helpful. Betty Cowan (Elizabeth) born January 1859 in Texas died 1936, parents unknown, but do know from census records that her father was born in Kentucky and her mother was born in Arkansas. Betty married Franklin (Frank A ?albert or abner?) born born about 1855 in Texas died 1941, son of John Holt and Lucretia ?. they were married about 1878-1879 in Texas. They lived in central Texas in Hays, Blanco, Coleman and possibly other areas in the central Texas area. Betty Cowan had brothers and I believe their names were Andrew, Charles, Lonnie, Tommy and Harry or Harvey. Betty Cowan and Frank Holt had children ~~~~~ Minnie - born 1879 in Texas died 1951 in San Marcos Texas married Albert Williamson (my great grandparents) Rufus - born about 1881 married to Alberta? Samuel - born about 1884 Mary Addie - born about 1887 Albert or Joseph - born about 1889 Fred - born about 1892 married to Martha Walker Margaret - born about 1895 married Fred Ragsdale then Maurice Eustace Eugene - born about 1899 Coleman - born about 1901 Any help appreciated Chris Phoenix AZ

Do you have any idea where in Ireland they may have been? Do you know where in SC they were or what port they arrived when they immigrated? You might just help us identify some of the Cowan lines that we find in Mississippi and Gonzales, County Texas that we don't know how to place them. I have often wondered if this is something that we need to do since they name them all David, John, Andrew, Samuel, James, etc and they all married a woman named Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Margaret, etc!!! Do you have them traced in the census from 1850 forward to 1930? I am guessing you know the line from immigration forward to you. DNA testing might also help. Did they change the spelling at any time - like with "e" or "i" - tell us more.

With so many different marriages and the possibility that there are a lot of other male Cowan children out there it would be interesting to tell you about the Cowan Surname DNA Project. I think that it might at some time shed some light on your Cowan line. Do you know why your Grandfather traveled so much?? Tell us more now that you have our attention - the more you tell the more help the Cowan researchers can be to you.

I've looked through lots of the postings and about all of them are in other states that don't seem anywhere near Michigan. To tell you the truth I'm not even sure what I am looking for but I'm hoping someone will at least be able to point me in a direction to explore. I'm trying to research my husbands side of the family which has been really difficult because his mom was adopted, and her real dad had been adopted. Her dad's last name now is SCHRAM but it should've been COWAN by what I hear. I just hope there are no further adoptions back so there aren't anymore name changes. If anyone knows anything about COWANs in MICHIGAN please let me know. Thank you! Jessica Napp8483@yahoo.com

It was called Russell's Fort by some because it was here that Captain Russell had his military headquarters and used the fort also for personal shelter. It is also sometimes referred to as COWAN's Fort and later Charles Bickley bought the COWAN land and it was then called Bickley's Fort. A fort in this area was also called Bush's Fort and is probably this same fort, but some contend otherwise. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ LIST OF TROOPS AT MOORE'S FORT JUNE 30, 1777 1.
