Surnames: COWAN Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DMQ.2ACIB/51.79.1.1 Message Board Post: I too am a descendant of this line (Cook Is branch) and have been researching without much success. My gr-grandfather is Peter Keith Mackay COWAN. Does anyone have more info on this family - I have since "found" my gr-gr-grandmother Marion Mackay Cowan/Stockwell buried along with her 2nd husband William, son Charles & her mother Isabella Dallas @ Waikumete Cemetery in Auckland where I live. I would like to know if anyone has info etc on their migration from Scotland, when they settled in NZ and perhaps when PKM settled in the Cooks. I will be attending the Cowan Family Reunion in Rarotonga Dec 2005 and hope to fill in some blanks when I get there......any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, you may be interested to know that it is actually our gr-gr-grandmother Isabella Dallas that is buried @ Waikumete and not her husband Peter Keith MacKay......am off to the reunion in Rarotonga in Dec '05 looking forward to 'filling in some blanks' while I'm there.

Her parents were William Cowan and Christina Grierson. My G grandmother Lillias had 2 children before she met my G grandfather, namely Christina Cowan who emmigrated to Westchester NY in 1892. I found her in the 1923 census for Westchester NY (the Bronx), but its like she dissapeared of the face of the earth. I don't know if she got married or died or whatever. My ancestors from my parents back are from Scotland. Our Cowans are from Larbert, Sterlingshire, Scotland. I hope that www.automatedgeneology.com can help you. You need to know the county in which Ottawa ON is located, then that makes your Cowans easier to find. When I was searching the Cowan message board, I saw an obituary for a Cowan in Vancouver BC. aybe they are some relatives of yours, but I can't remember what page they were on. I hope you find success. Jeannie

    1. A. Jackson Cowan (Washington Co, VA -> Claiborne Co, TN)
    2. Does anyone know A. Jackson Cowan (b. about 1815) and wife Maria(h)? They were in Washington County, VA 1840 census and 1860 (not too sure where in 1850). They appear to be parents of Newton Cowan (b. ca 1841); Samuel (b.ca 1843); Harriet, James, David, Mary and George. It appears Jackson may be son of James and Margaret Cowan but only circumstantial at present ... Anyone know this family? Gary

    3. I'm interested in anyone else's perspective on this person. I found his birth 1867 - 882 - 133 Homer Cowan, was born at 7am on the 22nd of August, 1867 at Maxwelltown, Dumfries, Scotland. Mother - Janet Cowan. Registered as Illegitimate. Next, he was listed on the 1871 census as Homer Hannay 1871 census Civil Parish of Troqueer, Parlimentary Burgh of Dumfries, Police Burgh of Maxwelltown, Town of Maxwelltown No. of Schedule: 67 29 Church St. inhabited Margaret Howat Head Wid 50 b. If his mother, Janet, was a Cowan at his birth, then why was he listed as a Hannay on the 1871 census. Why wouldn't he be living with his mother on the 1871 census. Could she have died? But, then on the 1881 census he is listed as a Cowan. What would cause the change. The Mary McIntyre on the 1881 census is Mary Cowan (Howat) McIntyre. Her mother is the Margaret Howat listed as head on the 1871 census, and is Margaret Kennedy (Ross) Howat. She is the widow of James Howat who is the son of another James Howat and Mary Cowan. Thus it appears that the relationship between Homer Cowan and Mary McIntyre would be distant, but still cousins. Mary Cowan, wife of James Howat is possibly the Mary Cowan b. Dec. 3, 1786 in Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire dau. to a Homer Cowan, which could explain the naming of the cousin Homer Cowan, and also Mary Cowan (Howat) McIntyre had a brother named Homer Cowan Howat.
