I know that most of John Cowan's children were born in Dutchess Cnty, NY. He had at least two daughters (names unknown) and six sons: Peter, Isaac, John Seaver, Andrew, David, and Alexander D. I have guestimated that David Cowan was probably born btwn 1720 - 1744 and John Cowan was probably born btwn 1745 and 1765. Any information on their origins would be most appreciated. Nan

I have a Elizabeth Cowan who was born 25 Jun 1806, her sister is Rosanna, brother John, brother Joseph, sister Sarah, sister Mary....all names that appeared to have been used over and over again for generations throughout the Scott's and Cowan's. My Scott didn't marry a Cowan until 13 February 1910, but I have seen other Scott's marrying Cowan's earlier, somewhere. There were indeed a lot of Cowan's, Scott's, Graham's around the same areas at the same times. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of us aren't "double-cousins" somewhere back along the line. Just thought this was really an interesting post. I wish you luck on making the connections you need.

I have numerous Isaac Cowans (Cowen), the furthest back b. 1788 in Dutchess County, son of John Cowan, b. btwn 1744-1764 in Scotland, son of David Cowan, b.btwn 1720 and 1745, also in Scotland. I have some copies of various census with information on this line as well as some other information, esp. descendants. I don't have any record of another Isaac born in 1756 tho I'm sure he must be related somehow. I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner, I crashed my computer around last April and never got the response notice until the one from Jean. If Jean has any additional information on Joseph's ancestors, John and David, it would help me place them. My John and David had many descendants also named John and David (also Isaac, Peter, Alexander). The only Mary Fleming I have was married to a Jacob Martin, so obviously not the same one. Please contact me at: [email protected] I would be happy to ! share "trees" and tie these lines together. Happy hunting. Nan

The following is taken from http://www.scott.k12.va.us/history/priorto.html#Prior%20to%201500 I don't know where he fits into the Cowan line but thought it might be of interest to someone kay 1776 - Capt. William Campbell and Elizabeth Henry are married and move to Aspen Vale. - The Revolutionary War begins - Dragging Canoe leads a band of about 1000 Cherokees across the Holston at Long Island to terrorize the settlers. - Ft. Houston is attacked by an estimated 300 Cherokees (Samuel Cowan rides from Ft.Blackmore to warn the fort - is killed leaving Ft. Houston to warn other outposts) - Isaac Crissman is killed at Rye Cove by Indians
Does anyone know anything about the following family, found in the 1860 & 1880 St. Clair Alabama census: James Cowan Margarett (wife) John, Mary, William, Nancy, Eliza, James, Celia, Joel and Louis/Lewis Any clues would be greatly appreciated. Example: (1) Cowan, Andrew to Jean Walker; bn; Samuel Wear, 179? - This is Andrew Cowan that ties into the 7 brothers - he is the Andrew that was 1st married to Mary Walker. From "Genealogy of the Descendants of John Walker of Wigton, Scotland (1600-1902)" by Emma Siggins White or the Wigton Walker Book - pages as follows. Page 6 - John Walker married Ann Houston March 1734 and they had nine children. Three of the Walker sisters married three Cowan brothers. The one of interest is Mary Walker that married Andrew Cowan (a Colonial soldier see Virginia Magazine, Volume 8, page 280) Pages 176 and 177 - Samuel Walker married Jane Patterson and had eight children. The child of interest here is James Walker that married Jane Thompson. This Jane is often found as Jean so it is a typo or she went by both Jane and Jean. Pages 180 and 181 James Walker married Jane Thompson in Sept 1786, they had two daughters and James Walker died in May 1791at age 39. Their daughter, Elizabeth Lyle Walker married Thomas McSpadden about 1809 and they had eleven children. Daughter, Jane Walker married John Ritchie Inman about 1807 and had sixteen children. Mary Walker Cowan dies and her cousin, James Wallker dies. Next, Andrew Cowan marries Jean (Jane) Thompson Walker. Mary Walker and James Walker would be first cousins children of brothers. Three children were born to Andrew and Jean Thompson Walker Cowan - Joel Cowan, Thompson Cowan, and Matthew Cowan. Joel Cowan married Annis W. Inman. Annis was born 1797 and the Parham-Cowan Folder from the vertical files at McClung lists Joel Cowan b-1794 d-1850 and states that he married in 1819 which is supported by the marriage records found in Dandridge, Tennessee at the courthouse. I also have the list of the marriage bonds that are found in the court house which differs a little from Penny's book that is quoted above. I belive that these records tie into this same family. (2) Cowan, Mathew to Polly Turner; bn; Joe Gregory Wit: J. Hamilton, April 6, 1820 (3) Cowen, Thompson to Charlotte Copland; bn; Benjamin Inman: Wit: Martin Wyle, September 18, 1810 (4) Cowan, Rachel to Robert Swann: License: June 8, 1814 This line is researched by Paul Cowan that lives in Texas. I think that this is the line that allowed him to become a member of the 1st Families of Tennessee. I don't have all of my notes down at this computer. <g>
