    3. Hi Sheila, I found the following COW*Ns in St. Clair County, Alabama in the 1870 census index (Family Quest Archives CD) for AL that I have (from Heritage Quest). All page numbers refer to census microfilm M593-roll 40. surname given name age sex race birthplace census locality page COWEN M J 20 M W AL Branchville PO 14 COWEN James 48 M W SC Branchville PO 16 ** COWEN Harrison 30 M W AL Branchville PO 16 COWEN Saml 45 M W SC Branchville PO 16 ** COWEN William 20 M W AL Branchville PO 17 COWEN John 22 M W AL Branchville PO 17 COWEN Wm 55 M W SC Broken Arrow PO 46 COWAN W W 53 M W SC Kelly Crk P O 84 I have found that the various indexes differ sometimes... The two with ** look like the ones you are seeking. Where were they living in 1850? Were they still in SC, or had they already gone to AL? 1. [COWAN-L] Edward Cowan, 1836 in Blythe, Ontario, Canada
    2. Audrey Sundstrom
    3. Hello Cowan Board. I’m new to Genealogy and if this rambles, please have patience as I’m desperate! I’m looking for the parents of my Gr. Grandfather Edward Cowan. What I know of Edward is the following: EDWARD COWAN was born 1836 in Blythe, Ontario, Canada, according to "word of mouth". He died April 08, 1921 in Hannah, Cavalier County, North Dakota. Again, that information was given at an interview. His death was not recorded so I can not confirm it. He married MARY EMILY HEMSTREET December 30, 1877 in Freeborn, Freeborn County, MN. This information was given on their marriage registration. Edward and Mary had 10 children: BERT EDWARD COWAN, born Jan. 24, 1880 in Austin, Minnesota (MN). Bert was a Minister in Canada. I have a very nice obituary from a church newspaper called "The Holiness Era". I don’t know what denomination that is and would like to know. LOVELLA COWAN, born Nov. 10, 1883; where unknown. ALBERT ANGUS COWAN, born April 1, 1885 in Watertown, Codington County South Dakota (SD). (birth certificate) GRACE COWAN (no middle name), born April 10, 1887 in Watertown, SD. CHARLIE COWAN, born in 1889 in Watertown, SD. Charlie is reported, not recorded, to have died in 1900 in MIAMI, THORNHILL, Manitoba (MB), Canada. CARRIE ETHEL COWAN, born June 28, 1891 in Watertown, SD; no death report. EFFIE COWAN, born Feb. 28, 1894 in Stanley, MB, Canada; no death report. NORMAN LESTER COWAN (my grandfather) born on Oct. 17, 1896 in Stanley, MB. LILLIAN COWAN, Born Feb. 30, 1899; where unknown ANNABELLE COWAN, Born in 1901; where unknown. Edward’s siblings were William, Jane, Thomas, Ellen and Pheobe. I don’t have any other information on them. According to the 1880 census, Edward was a farmer and Mary was a housekeeper. Bert had already been born by the time the census was taken. They also listed Edward’s father and mother as being from Ireland. Whew, that’s a lot of information. My question is – Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone? Being an "newbee" to genealogy where would I go next? Edward was born in Blyth, Canada, and I’ve found 2 Blyth Canada’s. One is in Nipissing District and the other in Morris Township, Huron County. How do I narrow it down? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp.

    1. [COWAN-L] James Cowan/ Samuel Cowan
    2. Sheila Jarrett
    3. Has anyone been able to locate Samuel Cowan in the 1870 census? I cannot seem to locate James and Margarett Cowan in 1870, but feel that they would have been living very near Samuel during that time since they were almost neighbors in 1860 and 1880, St. Clair, AL. I do not know if they moved or were skipped in the index books. Any help would be greatly appreciated. No one seems to know anything about James, the son of James Cowan and Frances Garrett. Unfortunately, it appears that I am the first person from his descendants to have an interest in family history research! Unless someone has another James born in SC around 1825, I am almost positive that he is the person that I have been trying to locate. Apparently his other descendants are not involved in the Cowan family research, but I would be glad to share any info that I have on his descendants with anyone who would like to fill out a "side" branch of their family tree. I don't have a lot, but am greatful for what I have found so far and more than happy to share! Once again, if anyone knows of another James that fits the above description- please let me know. I don't want to tie him to a family with which he doesn't belong. Thanks again, Sheila Jarrett --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! Mail.

    3. http://proni.nics.gov.uk/records/private/lond_eo.htm This web site may be of interest to some of the researchers on the list. PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE of NORTHERN IRELAND I did a Cowan search and this is the page that showed up -and here is a little snip from the site. Alexander Stewart, who was born in 1699, appears to have inherited the Donegal estate from his brother Thomas about 1730. In 1737 he married his cousin, Mary Cowan, daughter of Alderman John Cowan of Londonderry (d.1733), and heiress to her brother, Sir Robert Cowan, Governor of Bombay, 1729-1734. Sir Robert entered the service of the East India Company before 1720. He retired in 1735 and died in 1738. I really think that this is the Cowan line that Robert Cowan has been looking at and researching. I was just impressed with the idea that they may be actually putting some records online that will be helpful in Cowan research. Laura Cowan Cooper Kodak, TN 37764 [email protected]

    1. [COWAN-L] Here are the Cowan's listed in the 1790 census
    2. Anthony Coyan
    3. I've been a subscriber to Ancestry.com's databases for about 3 years now, but I finally decided to subscribe to the census images, now that they are making good headway at getting them indexed. I just browsed the COWAN surname for 1790, and here's what I got. Those with an ASTERISK are the ones I am either researching or am very "curious" to find other folks who suspect that they are descended from them I will note that my EDWARD migrated from Harford county, MD in the late 1790's to Washington county, PA, and by 1805 had changed my surname spelling to COYAN. Here are the Cowan Heads of Household along with County & State enumerated. Again, please contact me if you may share a kinship with those I have assigned an * ____ Cowan - Anne Arundel, MD Edward Cowan - Harford, MD (my immigrant - from Northern Ireland - ancestor) Robt Cowan - Harford, MD ** (I suspect was a brother to or father of my Edward) James Cowan - Talbot, MD ** Joseph Cowan - Burke, NC Marget Cowan - Burke, NC Jas Cowan - Lincoln, NC Ephraim Cowan - Albany, NY James Cowan - Albany, NY Joanna Cowan - Albany, NY Moses Cowan - Albany, NY Patrick Cowan - Albany, NY Barnard Cowan - New York, NY Alexander Cowan - Washington, NY Wm Cowan - Cumberland, PA ** George Cowan - Lancaster, PA John Cowan - Mifflin, PA Benja Cowan - Philadelphia, PA John Cowan - Washington, PA ** Methias Cowan - Westmoreland, PA James Cowan - Abbeville, SC John Cowan - Charleston, SC John Cowan - Chester, SC Robert Cowan - Chester, SC

    1. [COWAN-L] Help Please, from ANY Cowan
    2. Sheila Jarrett
    3. I am wondering if anyone can help me make a connection in the Cowan familes. My husband's GGGrandmother, Celia Cowan, was the daughter of James and Margrett Cowan. I found them in the 1860 St. Clair AL census. She was 11 days old. I also found her in the 1880 St. Clair census. She was married to Henry Jarrett and they were living next door to her parents. I can't seem to locate the family in 1870, when she would have been about 10. They were located on page 127B in 1880. The Samuel Cowan family is located a couple of houses prior on page 127A. I think James and Samuel and are cousins if I am on the right track. According to the 1860 census, her father James was 35 years old. Just a guess, but that would put him being born app. 1825. I have found a bit of info on a James Cowan who was born in 1826 to James Cowan and Francis Garrett. The birth date would fit, but when I look up the family of James and Francis Cowan through Familysearch.com, it only shows one son- a Nichalas Garrett Cowan. Any suggestions on how I can determine if "my" James Cowan WAS the son of James and Francis Cowan? Do any of your Cowan trees show other children for James and Francis. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Sheila Jarrett --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! Mail.
