Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/DMQ.2ACIB/762.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Marge, I hope that I can help. If you go to the site called foundmoney.com, there should be a search line that you can type any name into and it will bring up a whole list of names. I just went into the search field and typed in the last name, like Cowan and it brought up a slew of Cowan's. Then, you might have to subscribe to the sight to get help searching out more detailed information, depending on how far you want to take the search. By no means am I promoting this subscription site, I just found out about it and tried it myself. I also heard something about it on the Ophra Winfrey show. So, I hope you get rich!!! I hope you find some long lost fortune!! Good Luck to you...Janie

    1. [COWAN-L] Cowans in Selkirkshire
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. Wow, I found out about the most useful site tonight, IGI Batch Numbers - British Isles at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm Hugh Wallis deserves enormous thanks for putting up this site, which provides a very simple way of searching the online version of the IGI for any region of the British Isles, broken down by region/country, county, parish, and the batch numbers that cover each parish or partial parish/county. It's amazingly easy to use -- I extracted all of the Cowans in Selkirkshire tonight, and have put them on 4 webpages, at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~valorie/cowan/Cowan-IGI-Ettrick.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~valorie/cowan/Cowan-IGI-Roberton.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~valorie/cowan/Cowan-IGI-Selkirk.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~valorie/cowan/Cowan-IGI-Yarrow.htm The Ettrick page has the Galashiels & Kirkhope Cowan findings also; there were no Cowans found in Caddonfoot. I plan to add to this data as I find it online, and use that list as a basis for extracting all of the Cowans in the Parish records of Selkirkshire. I hope this information is useful to you! All the best, Valorie Cowan Zimmerman, whose Cowans left Yarrow in 1832, and went to Ontario, Canada, and New York, USA

    3. Picked up this url from another list I'm on ~ much discussion as to how difficult it is going to be to wade through the 1930 census. Only 11 southern states are soundexed and there is no indexing. This means folks will have to use city guides and maps to identify enumeration districts, etc. The preliminary process was averaging one hour per record today....difficult at best. Here's some help in what you're in for: http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/census/

    3. I don't know why the link appeared in such a strange manner, but it does work and has an interesting assortment of Cowan references. These also appear to be early Cowan's Carolyn, do you know if the Abstract to the Geo. Rogers Clark Papers that can be bought is abstracts of the actual papers or does one need to go view the actual microfilm rolls? I am sure that you have seen what each of these references reveal. <g> This is information that I have not seen before or have run across. I find it very interesting that it is not a source that I have heard of before. Thanks Carolyn for sharing this with us!!!! 3. Caroline, So that means that you have some of the papers for Rush (I believe is the county) IN??? It was where a lot of the land grants were given. 1830 is a good period of time for a lot of the different family members to end up in that area. Also are the LDS films or are they films that the newspapers have had filmed. I have been looking at a film of Dover, TN or Stewart County, Tennessee - it is a odd assortment of newspapers, but I have picked up so many little things about the area that I did not know and have picked up many little blips about people that are in my family tree, but did not know they were in that area. So it has given me many leads to follow up on. I had been wondering what the correct spelling of "Margarette" was - I have a Margarette that married my John Horace Cowan in Ohio. This was during my life time. Where is the Griffith line from - do any of them end up in Frederick county, Maryland? It often helps to know where or list members are located - may times there are cousins visiting in the area that would drop in or spend the day if they knew you were there. I have had several that research the Cowan's of Jefferson, Sevier, Knox, Blount , and Sullivan County, TN or Russell County, VA spend time with me. Now, I also have some that have been in the area and keep promising that they will call and don't!!!!<g> Laura Cowan Cooper

    2. Hi Joanne & Gayle, Did I tell you that her name was spelled Margarette on her marriage lic.? Also, if you ever get a chance to come to Indpls., or Greenfield, I will take you to a place that will blow your mind if you liked the obit. on her. We have a room in our downtown historical society that is enormous & filled with every newspaper ever written in IN. That is where I get my obits. They start in most areas of In. in 1830. You read them on a microfilm machines & it wears you out. I will spend all day there and some them are real jackpots & some of them dunces. My James Jones in 1830, I still haven't found. And that is driving me crazy! My husband Ron is entering all info into our Family Origins. Right now he is putting all our Griffith stuff together and will probably be on it for another week. We will send it to you soon. There are some others that are wanting copies also. Also, I did get your other letters to me. Thanks....See ya later....Carolyn from Greenfield

Place and year of their marriage? I am asking because our COWAN family has been unable to locate a Thomas Cowan, b. 1858 McDowell Co. NC and brother William Cowan, b.ca 1860 also in McDowell Co. NC. They and their brother John Cowan(located Bowie Co. Texas family) left home after the death of their mother and remarriage of their father. Last known records were in Fort Smith, Ark. Court Records trying to notify them of an inheritance from grandparents Desie and Thomas Long of NC ca late 1880's or early 1890's. They were listed in Purcell Indian Territory at the time. William, I believe, was in the part called Red River Valley. William's middle name "Reuben" caught my attention as well as the Whistnant surname of his wife. The Cowan and Whistnant families were neighbors on Cane Creek in McDowell and earlier Burke Co. NC. Any information would be appreciated. Betty Frazer [email protected]
