I knew that you each knew who you were researching!!! Good postings!!! Keep up the good work, but remember to have something in the Subject: that will give a hint and something in the body that will search well. Like I would make sure that Robert Varner Cowan was in my post so that the Varner would search out or Rowan County, NC. I at least know that you read what I post!!!! <g> Laura

I have a Elizabeth Cowan who was born ca 1808 East Tenn. Married Caperton Kelly ca 1823. Had daughter Nancy Ann who was born 9th of Dec 1828 in Cowan Tenn. Nancy's death certificate states that her parents were Mr. Kelly and Miss Cowan. Is there anyone missing a Cowan female born about 1808 in East Tenn and then would be in Franklin Co, Tenn by 1828 time period. The Kelly's were from Greenbrier Co, Va and migrated to Madison Co, Kentucky. They appear to follow the following famalies: Estill, Woods, Townsand, Kavanaugh, Campbell's, Estes and Caperton's. They went to Cooper Co, Mo but evidence according to census they either come back to Tenn where some of their children were born in the 1830's. I can't find find them in Tenn or Mo for 1830. By 1840 they are in Morgan Co, Mo and there for 1850. Here are the names of the children of Caperton and Elizabeth (Cowan)Kelly: William born ca 1824 Tenn. Nancy Ann born 9, Dec 1828. Emaline born 1834 E. Tenn. Thompson born ca 1836 E. Tenn. John born ca 1844 Mo. Eliza born ca 1847 Mo. Alcinda born ca 1849 Mo. Looks like there maybe some children missing. Franklin Co, Tenn Deed Book 27 Aug 1818 James Kelly bought from John Estes. James Kelly was father of Caperton Kelly and father in-law to John Estes. Lived on the waters of Boiling fork of Elk River. Franklin Co, Tenn Will book 1808-1810: James Kelly is a witness to the will of Andrew Woods and wife Hannah. 19th March 1810. In 1830 Franklin Co,Tenn there is a James Cowan who has a daughter 20 to 30 yrs of age which would fit for Elizabeth. The there is a Mary who has two daughters 20 to 30. So she could fit here also. Can anyone name all the children of the James and Mary Cowan where I can eliminate or find out more info on them or move on. Or!!!!!! can someone place a female missing who would have been born ca 1808. Elizabeth could have had another name I'm not awhere of. We know that Cowan's md into the Caperton family and my James Kelly md Nancy Caperton. She was the daughter of John Caperton and Polly Thompson. Please!!!! any clue or any kind of info sure would help. I have been at a stand still on this Cowan wayyyyyyyyyyyto longgggggg. Gay Nix

Thanks Laura for prompting us to post our lines again. My Peter Cowen is posing a huge problem for those of us researching him as family tradition tells us there was a name change. We don't know what the original name was for sure, or when the change occurred, but it began with a "K", possibly "Khius, Kius, Kowen, Koen" etc. Peter's wife, Polly was born in North Carolina in 1789 and even though his birth place was listed as Georgia, he may have been in North Carolina at some time. He first appeared in Logan (later Warren, then Simpson) County, KY about 1805 when he began buying land on Drake's Creek and the Red River. He died in Simpson County in 1835 and his family then moved to Hickory County, Missouri. Other Cowens found in the same area of Kentucky during the same time period include: William Caun, Sept. 13, 1796, 200 a. of land, survey, Logan County Laura Cowan, November 1798, Warren Co., .....waters of Drakes Creek ... in the name of Laura Cowan. Nathan Cowan - 1803 Warren County, bound to Wm. Mitchell to learn trade of farmer. Jonathan Cowan, Oct. 1803, Warren Co., bound to learn trade of tanner. Jesse Cowan, 1804, Warren Co., bound to learn trade of Shoemaker Levi (possibly Lew) Cowan, father of Jesse Cowan, 1804 Warren Co. Lewis Cowan, August 26, 1799 enters 200 a. of land, Drakes Creek, Warren County. I've not been able to discover the parents of the following Isabel Cowan. Perhaps someone on the list is also researching this particular Cowan line. Isabel Cowan (born October 25, 1768) married about 1791 William Baskin (born January 6, 1768, perhaps Augusta County, Virginia and died January 27, 1838, Gwinnett County, Georgia). William Baskin was the son James Baskin and Margaret Pickens who resided in Abbeville District, South Carolina. I'm descended from Henry Cowan who died in early 1829 in Rockingham County. There's the usual story of his having been born in Scotland and come with his family as a young boy, with the parents dying at sea. I haven't been able to prove his family line, although I've seen contradictory information floating around the internet. I'd love to find Cowan cousins. Henry married Temperance Armistead in 1781 and had nine children who married into the Pickering, Farmer, Loker, Laymon, Kizer, McIntosh, Strickler, Blosser, Trevey, and Wallace families. My ancestor is Temperance Cowan Blosser Trevey Wallace. Linda Lang Oliver Springs TN

I just did a search in the Cowan Archives for a topic that I know should have been in them and could not locate the exchange. Has anyone else found this to be a problem??? Anyway, I did come across some posts that are from what has become lurkers. <g> Many of you post one time and I never see another post form you!!! If the archives is eating some of our messages, then we need to post our family lines, etc. several times a year!!!!<g> I also looked at the list of members and I am embarrassed to say that I as Cowan List Manager do not know what family lines you are researching or who you are from your e-mail address!!! So if I don't know who you are researching then very few on the list do and we can't keep your Cowan line in mind if you don't post it every now and then. <g> So lets do a round of posting our family lines for the 1st quarter in 2002!!!! I use to print this type of post and take it to the library with me and keep it in a special mailbox so I could match researchers - well, I haven't seen much of that type of info lately. When you do post, please do a good "Subject" so people will open it!!!!!!! Laura Cowan Cooper Cowan List Manager

John Cowen/Cowan b. abt 1720 d. 1775 NC. Wife Margaret (maiden name unknown) John was granted 270 acres acres of land on May 17, 1754, in Anson County, NC on the north side of the Catawba River. The 270 acres are located in present day Mecklenburg County NC where the Duke Power Company's Cowan's Ford Hydroelectric and McGuire Nuclear Stations are located. It is also the location of the Revolutionary War Battle on February 1, 1781, when Militia General William Lee Davidson was killed. John's will was recorded in the April 1776 session of the Mecklenburg County Court in Will Book A, on page 179. The will was dated April 12, 1775, and names the following: ...youngest son William Cowen all my present Dwelling Plantation; Wife Margaret Cowen; Daughter Hannah Cowen; Son Joseph Cowen; oldest son John Cowen, with Robert Gault to be Executors....witnessed by Joseph Galit (Gault) and Patrick Crawford. William, the youngest son of John and Margaret Cowen, became the owner of the Cowen property at "Cowan's Ford" (NC) as designated by the Will of John Cowen. Myself, and many cousins, would love to find the parents of this John. Becky Big Lake, Alaska Cowen Family Genealogy http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rebalee/ Surnames: . Thought that some of you in the area of Sevierville, TN might be interested in this lecture!!!! <snip> Pioneer settlers arrived in present-day Knox, Jefferson, Cocke, Hamblen, and Sevier Counties shortly after the end of the Revolutionary War. Today, it's hard to imagine what foods they ate, what clothes they wore, and what their lives were like in general. On Sunday, March 24, 2002, modern citizens of this area can learn about the original settlers from Robert McGinnis, site director of Knoxville's James White's Fort. McGinnis is an expert in pre-statehood East Tennessee history. Donning period-appropriate costumes and using antique artifacts as props, he recreates pioneer characters in lectures around the region. Mr. McGinnis will give his presentation from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Sevier County Heritage Museum, 167 E. Bruce Street (old post office), Sevierville. The public is invited, and there is no charge for admission. In addition to the talk by Mr. McGinnis, costumed members of the John Sevier Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution will be available to answer questions and demonstrate the use of period artifacts.
