Odessa was born in Chicago, IL and I'm curious to know exactly what the connection is between the Horn/Cowan families. Thanks for any info., Justin

I am searching for the parents of Elizabeth Cowan born 1774 who married Josiah Ramsey about 1790. Elizabeth and Josiah were in Wythe County, VA from 1792 until about 1799. In 1800 they paid tax in Lee County, VA. In 1801 they purchased property in Claiborne County, TN, and lived there for the remainder of their lives. They had 13 children. Her sons were Thomas, James, Josiah, David, and William. Her daughters were Elizabeth, Eleanor, Mary, Margaret, Rachel, Phoebe, Ruth, and Sarah. Josiah Ramsey built and operated a grist mill near Mulberry Gap which is now in Hancock County, TN. He was also a Justice of the Peace in Claiborne County, TN. Does anyone know which Cowan was Elizabeth's father? Rosemary Ramsey Cox
Hello list, it's time for my semi annual "hail Mary" to the group hoping since the last time someone has joined who knows my "clan"... My g-g-g-grandfather was James Cowan born about 1780. He married Margaret (?) and can be found in Wythe County, VA through early 1800s and then in Washington County, VA until his death between 1840-1850. He and Margaret are buried in Hagy Cemetary just north of Abingdon. Among their children are Isaac (b 1827) my g-g-grandfather who married Elizabeth Carroll. I have never been successful at chasing James' family down. Which of the famous brothers does he belong to? Any clues or pointers are appreciated! Gary

I see from the recent listings of pedegree lines that there are several list members interested in Samuel Cowan, the Immigrant. In reviewing my Notes, I have found two early references to a Samuel Cowan that may prove productive to additional research. First, in one of the LDS films there are listings for "Representative Elders, Presb. Ch. in Ireland." That's the Entry Heading that will help you locate the exact film. For 1726 we have Alderman [John] Cowan of Monreagh Presb. Ch., County Donegal. For 1732 we have Samuel Cowan, Urney Presb. Ch., Co Tyrone. For 1734 we have William Cowan, Strabane Presb. Ch., Co. Tyrone For 1765 we have Issac Cowan, Donegore Presb. Ch., Co. Antrim. After locating the above info in my Notes, I then turned to Alexander Lecky, IN THE DAYS OF THE LAGGAN PRESBYTERY to cross check my references with his entries in the Appendix for Ruling Elders and Commissioners. No Samuel Cowan listed for Urney. I then reread the heading information and found that the Laggan Presbytery entries are for members who attended meeting between 1672 and 1700. Therefore, no problem with an omission. The LDS film supplements the Laggan Presbytery material and extends the time frame of men who were Repfresentative Elders. Just for the record, the men listed by Lecky for Urney are as follows: Matthew Semple, John Wallace, Robert Gamble, John Stevenson, John Burnside, Robert Allison, William Paton, Wm. Stevenson, Robert Wyly, Michael Simson, John Swan, John Smith, William Waker [spelling variation for Walker?] Wm. Rodger, David Shiels, John M'Arthur, Alex. Wylie, Joseph Lyon, Captain Robert Hamilton, John Monteith, Robert Pont, Robert Orr, Hohn Hamilton, John Holmes, John Fulton, John Robinsone, H. Noble, James Brown, Samuel Simple, James Brock, Robert Wilson, Robert Smith, Joseph M'Crory, John Hemphill, Robert Riddell, Robert Neyley. The importance of the above listing is that you have the names of a group of men, a thirty years time frame during which there was some association, and a specific geographical location. Good record. Next I turn to A TOPOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF IRELAND to locate Urney. URNEY, a parish, partly in the barony of RAPHOE, county of Donegal, but chiefly in that of STRABANE, county of Tyrone, and province of ULSTER, 2 miles (s.s.w.) from Strabane, containing, with the village of Claudy and part of the town of Strabane (each separately described) 7277 inhabitants. This parish ...comprising of 14,489 statute acres, is bounded on the north-west by the county of Donegal, and is situated for the most part between the rivers Finn and Mourne, which, uniting at its northern extremity, form the Foyle. The greater portion of the land is remarkably fertile, and under its present improved treatment produces abundant crops of all kinds of grain...." Basically, the Urney parish is south of Londonderry on the Foyle River, in the south east section of Donegal and the north west section of Tyrone, in the general area known as The Laggan. We now have a good fix on a Samuel Cowan in Urney in 1732. There are no printed references to any Samuel Cowan in County Down until much later. Given the Scottish naming patterns, this Samuel could have been the father or an uncle of Samuel Cowan, the Immigrant. This is additional evidence that the 7 brothers were from Donegal in the Laggan area. It seems to me that the situation is of a death in the family of a female spouse, the subsequent remarriage of the widower husband which was followed by the exodus of the children of the first wife as immigrants to the Pennsylvania where there had been a significant emigration from Donegal to Pennsylvania beginning in about 1717. I am running short of time, so my next entry will be on Samuel Cowan, County Derry Faughanvale Parish, Derryarkin. An entry from the 1740 listing of Protestant Householders. Adherents of the County Down theory as the source of these Cowans are cordially invited to produce their evidence. Please leave your hat tricks for Dr. Seuss. jcmaclay John Cowan McClay Cowan of Cowansville

One of the more interesting passages from Lecky's books on the Laggan concern worship during the Siege: " The Presbyterians of Derry were not permitted to have a place of worship within the walls for many years; till after the days of the siege they had to go outside the walls when they worshipped God in public. During the siege they were permitted as a favour to hold their meetings for worship in the Cathedral, at an hour when it was not required by the Episcopal congregation. In a pamphlet published shortly after by Mr. Boyse it is stated, "In the Cathedral in the forenoon, when the conformists preached, there was but comparatively a thin auditory; in the afternoon it was full, and there were four or five meetings of dissenters in the town besides." The intolerance of the bigotry that would not allow the voice of Presbyterian praise or prayer to be lifted up within the precincts of the city may be inferred from the following account of the inhabitants of Derry, given by the surveyor-general of customs, in the report of an official visit that he paid to Derry in the year 1637. He says, "I find that the English there are but weak and few in number, there being not forty houses in Londonderry of English of any note, who for the most part only live; the Scots, being many in number and twenty to one for the English, having prime trade in town and country, thrive and grow rich; but the Irish for the most part beg, being the reward of their idleness." DAR records say Andrew Matthew Cowan, b1760, NC, d1815 TN married Martha Evans, who was a sister to Captain Nathaniel Evans, of Sevier Co., TN. Lost Links, originally published, Nashville, TN., 1947, says Andrew Matthew Cowan was the son of Samuel Cowan who was killed by Indians at Houston’s Fort in the summer of 1776. Andrew’s mother was Ann Walker Cowan, who was held captive by Indians for several years. Andrew Matthew and his wife Martha are the people I am researching, and I would welcome any help. As I do research I try to collect any pieces of Cowan information that I think fits the time frame and area of these people. While doing so, I am aware Henry Cowan who married the widow Temperance Armistead/Armstrong Robinson, is a part of the so called seven brothers. This is part of what I have on them taken from information supplied by Frank Lamb who began researching the “Henry Cowan Family of VA,” abt 1929. I hope this helps the Henry Cowan researchers. Henry Cowan b abt 1733, one of seven children, first came ashore in Eastern Maryland. Henry served in the Rev War, one of his comrades, Daniel Robinson was killed and Henry went to tell his widow, that's how he met Temperence. Daniel and Temperence had one child Thomas. After leaving the service, Henry married Temperence abt 1781, he was nearly fifty years old, he received one hundred acres of land in Rockingham Co., VA., where he spent the remainder of his life, dying there abt 1829, at the age of 96. Temperence died there April 1838, age abt 70. I am descended through Alexander Cowan of Newton Co., Ga. He was the brother of Robert Cowan mentioned by a prior poster. This Cowan family came to SC and settled in the Fishing Creek area of Chester County sometime just prior to 1800. Alexander Cowan along with Robert and family moved to the Newton Co. area of GA around the mid 1820s. Robert was a charter member and elder of the Hopewell Presbyterian Church which is probably closer to Conyers, Ga now. The Alexander Cowan family settled in the Snapping Shoals area of Newton Co, Ga. The members of the family were as follows in the 1860 census: Cowan Alexander 37 M . Farmer -born SC Cowan Mary A. 34 F . . . .born S.C. . . . . . Cowan John P. 16 M . . . . Ga. . . . . I also descend from John and Margaret (maiden name unknown) Cowan, the same as Becky Cowen-Cornelius, except that I descend from their daughter, Mary Cowan, who married a James Clark. Mary and James moved from the York Co., SC area to Lincoln Co., Tennessee by about 1814, I believe - certainly by 1820. I'm assuming that Mary had previously been in the Anson/Mecklenburg Co., NC area. Wish we knew who John's parents were and what Margaret's maiden name was. We (well, me, anyway) had thought that we descended from one of the four brothers - David Cowan, which was research done by Susan Clark Slaymaker - a cousin of mine; however, I guess now we have thrown that part of her research out as not being correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live in New Hampshire and am not able to do any real research from this vantage point. There's absolutely nothing in this local library on my Southern ancestors. Sue Howard [email protected]
My great-great grandfather was Samuel F Cowan. The "F" may have stood for Franklin. He died in 1883 and is buried near Buda, Texas. His wife was Candace Neil (sp?) Colbreth Cowan who died in 1911 or 1912. The 1880 census of Blanco County, Texas lists him as 47 years old having been born in Arkansas. Some family lore says that he came from Missouri and his father was a Franklin Cowan. Still others say he came from Tennessee. He served in the Confederate Army and his wife Candace applied for a pension in 1909. His children included: W.J. (Andrew) Cowan - my great grandfather Elizabeth Thomas Louisa b. 1862 Rachel b. 1867 Charles b. 1872 Lonnie b. 1978 The great grandchildren of Andrew have been unable to connect Samuel F. with any of the earlier Cowans in this country. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. David Cowan
My family descends from Alfred Cowan, born in Blount County, TN 1800 and died in near Greenfield, MO in 1849. He married Jane Cook whom we have no detailed information on. His daughter (my GG Grandmother), Albina Minerva Cowan, (born in 1840) and died in 1931 in Alden, Kansas. She married John Brown (1832-1916) from Monroe County, TN. We believe that Alfred's father was Andrew Cowan from Virginia born 1780. That is where we have our Cowan brickwall. Unfortunately I'm away from home and look up more details.
