    1. [COWAN-L] Castle's Woods, the Laggan and Siege of Londonderry
    2. On May 27th John Giacoletti and I travel to Northern Ireland to begin a three week trip to research those families who defended Derry during the great siege. While rootsweb claims to have in excess of 20,000 surname lists we are interested in less than one hundred. That is the approximate number of families we have found that have roots both at Derry and King's Mountain and it is the migration of these families from Ulster to the Carolinas by way of Pennsylvania, Virgina and other places that we wish to explore. I could not be happier with my travelling companion who by all accounts is a scholar. John and I both attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received a M.A there in 17th Century British literature and for two years was a Wilson Library Fellow and assistant to the Curator of Rare Books. For his thesis he did a manuscript attribution study and gained great skill in reading the Elizabethan hand. I was a business major and am included on this trip because I drive well on the left side of the road!! In order to help the researcher gain a better understanding of his or her Ulster roots three documents have been offered to the lists during the past few months. The first and by all accounts the most popular, has been the thesis by Professor James W. Hagy entitled, "Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799 published 1966 at East Tennessee St. University. The importance of Castle's Woods is twofold. First, it had its day of importance as a stepping stone to the West and secondly, it is important as a case study of the American frontier. I actually located Professor Hagy a month or so ago, thirty-seven years after he wrote this thesis and had a nice conversation with him. The second item offered was a two book set by the Reverend Alexander Lecky; "The Laggan and its Presbyterianism" and "In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery" published in Belfast 1905 and 1908. The Laggan is the area between the river Foyle and the upper reaches of Lough Swilly, and extending in one direction from Lifford to Letterkenny. It formed the most productive and desireable portion of the ancient territory of Tyrconnell. These books represent the first published source of early settlers (Presbyterian elders) arranged by Parish and TOWNLAND. To know who sat in the pew next to you is really exciting if you are researching allied families of your direct line. I will not list all the names of the people listed in Lecky's books except to say that if I send this post to your list it is because a person with the same surname is listed as an elder in the Appendix. The last and most detailed offering is titled, "A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defence of Enniskillen in 1688 and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical Notes, & by the Reverend John Graham, M.A., Rector of Migilligan, in the Diocese of Derry. The Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim, the Siege and Capitulation of Limmerick, by Lord McCaulay., Toronto, McClear & Publishers, 1869. What a title!! They don't write em like that any more. I sacrificed my copy to the copy machine as it was in poor condition and now it is for all purposes destroyed, but it copied really well. From the forward we read the following: "In bringing out a new edition of Mr. Graham's narrative of the Siege of Derry, and enhancing its value by descriptions from Lord McCaulay's graphic pen, the publishers conceive that they are conferring a benefit upon the reading public of Canada-for the events which these pages record are such as we do not willingly let die. Apart altogether from the political and religious aspects of the question, the romance of history never had a fairer theme. Truth is proverbially stranger than fiction, and never did the all-exiting elements of truth gather in sterner compression than around these memorable hundred days. What fiction ever imagined excitements and sensations more thrilling? and yet they are no morbid fancies of the distempered brain, but events which actually happened, events from whose enactment and results, the destinies of a nation were changed." I will keep sending these documents to as many people as want them up until May 1st. Contact me at [email protected] for details. Upon our return all findings will be posted to our website (under construction) and the lists will be notified. It is not possible to remain on all of the lists all of the time so feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you have any specific questions. Thanks to those people who sent us e-mails so far with their family lines that tie to Derry and King's Mountain. Regards, Robert Cowan John Giacoletti

    1. [COWAN-L] Origins of Settlers in the Plantation of Ulster
    2. This may prove useful in directing the researcher to the correct location in Scotland after locating a family member in Ulster. Origin of settlers On the basis that the settlers would have mainly come from the estates of the undertakers the origin of Scottish settlers by County pans out as : Armagh , Fews barony - East Lothian, Midlothian Cavan, Clankee barony - Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, Stirlingshire Cavan, Tullyhunco barony - Dunbartonshire, East Lothian, Midlothian. Donegal , Boylagh and Banagh barony - Ayrshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, Wigtonshire Donegal, Portlough barony - Ayrshire, Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire, Stirlingshire Fermanagh, Knockninny barony - Fifeshire, Kincardineshire, Kinrosshire Fermanagh, Magheraboy barony - East Lothian, Lanarkshire, Midlothian, Tyrone, Mountjoy barony - Ayrshire, East Lothian, Perthshire Tyrone, Strabane barony - Ayrshire, Berwickshire, Linlithgowshire, Renfrewshire, Perthshire. It is a possibility that some Walkers (Wigtonshire) and Cowans (Dunbartonshire) may have ended up in Donegal. Just a thought. Regards, Robert Cowan

    3. Hello, fellow researchers, Monday,April 1st(April Fool's Day) should be a happy one for genealogists! 2. Trish and List, I haven't been able to find parents or siblings for Elizabeth Cowan, born 1774 who married my ggg grandfather Josiah Ramsey, born 1769. The Ramseys were in what would become Wythe County, VA as early as 1768. They lived near Fort Chiswell in the Max Meadows Community. The only other clue I have is that Elizabeth Cowan's mother may have been a Gibbs, a sister of David Gibbs who lived in Wythe County near Robert Graham. Robert Graham married Mary Cowan, born about 1768 whose mother was a sister of David Gibbs. Does anyone have any record of a Gibbs/Cowan marriage? Rosemary Ramsey Cox

    2. Dan and Trish Andrae
    3. Gary and Rosemary (and List), I was elated to see your mention of Cowan, Wythe County VA, Washington County, VA and Claiborne Co, TN all in two consecutive messages! I've been looking forever for a family for my Rebecca Cowan, b. 1806 in VA, who married 22 Feb 1831 in Wythe Co, VA, Furney Jones, b. 1807 in VA. Rebecca Cowan and Furney Jones lived in Washington Co, VA til the mid 1850's when they moved to Claiborne Co TN where they lived til their deaths. It's very tempting to believe there is a connection between Gary's James Cowan, b. 1780, living in Wythe County and Rosemary's Elizabeth Cowan of Wythe Co. who moved to Claiborne Co, TN. Too many coincidences!!?? Could James and Margaret Cowan be Rebecca's parents? Do you have the names of the rest of their children? It's of note to mention that Rebecca's and Furney's first child was named Margaret Jones and their second son was named James Jones. Hoping against hope! 1. [COWAN-L] James & Margaret Cowan / St. Clair County, Alabama
    2. Sheila Jarrett
    3. Another brick wall for everyone to ponder... Maybe someone will recognize this family. I am trying to find information on the parents/siblings of James Cowan, born circa 1825. According to census information, he was a farmer/blacksmith, born in South Carolina as were both of his parents. Their names are unknown at this point (to me, anyway). James married Margaret(t) Moore in St. Clair county, Alabama on November 21, 1844. The family remained in St. Clair county at least until 1880, when they are at that point living next door to their daughter Celia and her newlywed husband, Henry Jarrett. The children of James and Margaret Cowan were: John, Mary, William, Nancy, Eliza, James, Celia, Joel, Lewis (aka Lood/Lude) and two other children whose names I do not know. In 1900, Margaret is widowed and living in St. Francis county, Arkansas. By 1910, she is living in St. Francis county with her son Lewis. She is listed as being the mother of 11 children. That is where I realized that there are two other children who are "missing" during the 1880-1900 time period. Her daughter Celia (Jarrett) and husband Henry also moved to the St. Francis/Cross county area in Arkansas. I would love to find someone who knows something about this family. James is such a common name among the Cowans that it is almost impossible to make a definite connection. I have no idea where/when James died. It had to be between 1880 and 1900. I know that the family had some connection to Tennessee. James and Margaret were living and raising their family in St. Clair county Alabama, but their daughter Celia married Henry Jarrett in Lincoln county, Tennessee in December 1879. By June 1880 (census), Celia and Henry are living next door to her parents back in St. Clair! I would love to find out what brought the daughter all the way to Tennessee. Does anyone recognize any of this info?? I am hoping to find the names of James' parents. :-) Thanks to everyone for such an active and informative mailing list! 1. [COWAN-L] James Marion Cowan - Tennessee
    2. John T. Spradling
    3. Hello List, James Marion Cowan is my Cowan brickwall. He was born at an unknown date and place. He had two sons by his first wife, names all unknown, and upon her death the boys went to live with her family (parents or siblings). He was a Confederate Veteran and his unit is believed to be the 11th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. He had a brother, in another unit, who was wounded in the Civil War, but James himself was not wounded. James married a second wife, Eliza L. Bond of Fentress County, Tennessee after the Civil War and they had a son, Samuel Henry Cowan. Samuel was born 13 October 1867 and grew up in and around Byrdstown, Tennessee. After James Marion's death, Samuel and his mother, Eliza, lived with his grandfather, Samuel Bond. When he became an adult, Samuel Henry moved to the near vicinity of Dallas, Texas. James Marion died of consumption about June of 1868. It is believed that he died in Vicksburg, Mississippi, while seeking treatment for the disease. Most of this is family "word-of-mouth" information. If anyone recognizes anything here, any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, John
