Note that Anderston in Glasgow is Anderson and Cowan's in Glasgow/Scotland are common names (closely related to Colqhoun). I too am starting to trace family roots and, for my own part, appear to come from Ireland.
John and I leave on our genealogical expedition Sunday and arrive Shannon Monday morning. I secured first nights lodging in my favorite town in Ireland, Westport, Co. Mayo at Atamont House B&B which is a pre-famine dwelling with 7 rooms within walking distance of town center which includes Matt Moloy's pub (Whistle player for the Chieftians) where the Guinness flows until late at night. Checked weather.com and saw the ten day forecast for the West and it included rain for ten days. Ah, as the Irish say, "Its a soft day" Mary answered the phone at the B&B as she has done ever since I first stayed there in 1985, told me to drive carefully and enjoy the sights on the way up and to remember to bring euros instead of punts. I asked her about the weather and she said that May had not been good. Imagine that, an entire month described as "not good" Living in the south holds certain advantages but 59 degrees and rain can be quite nice when it is accompanied by good friends, good misic and good Guinness. Only the Irish could come up with an expression as beautiful as "soft day" It makes you kind of look forward to it. Bye, Robert Cowan Slippin through Shannon on the road to Wesport, County Mayo, Republic of Ireland

Hello. Just an FYI. This database has just been mounted by the Illinois State Archives. A lot of Cowans have died in this state between 1916 and 1951. Peace to you all. The Illinois Statewide Death Index (1916-1951) is now available on the Illinois State Archives Web site. A customized online death certificate request form is also available. Requests for death certificates from 1916 to 1947 will be directed to the Illinois State Archives Reference Unit. Requests for death certificates after 1947 should be referred to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Hi Jody, My maiden name is Cowan. Most of the research that I am into right now is folks that came to Kentucky around 1774 and on into Indiana in early 1800's which is where my Cowans went. I understand that quite a few settlers came to Indiana from Mercer Co and Bourbon Co. in KY. My own gggg-grandfather, Wilson Cowan came around 1814 with the Buchanans who built a fort on the (what is now called) Jefferson/Ripley Co. line. He was the s/o Hugh & Margaret Buchanan Cowan. There is a newspaper article in The Harrodsburg Herald, Thursday March 22, 1973, p6, which is titled "John McGee Came To Kentucky In 1775". In this large 7 column article it says...In 1773, two of John McGee's brothers-in-law, James McCoun and Robert McAfee (whose wife was Anne McCoun), came to Kentucky from Botetourt Co., Virginia....they came there to survey lands for themselves and their relatives. McGee's acres joined lands surveyed for Samuel McAfee and Samuel Adams.....In 1775 the Botetourt Co group of men, called the McAfee Company, made their second trip to KY in order to clear their lands and build cabins. They intended to bring their families in spring of 1776 but were impeded. (Here the article is torn off) but the top of next column ...(it also mentions James McAfee) I do not know if this helps or not but I will keep my eyes open for your Andrew McAfee b. 1829. Good luck....Carolyn Cowan of Greenfield, IN
Dear Rosemary, Not much is written about James because he died so early but here is what I have from the writtings by Nancy O'Malley called 'Stocking Up" : John Cowan's Station - John Cowan was an important Boyle Co. (the county names was changing so fast at that time) settler who figured prominently from the earliest days of settlement. Cowan, a Pennsylvanian, accompanied Thomas Bullitt and James Harrod on their early surveys but also made many private 400-acre surveys on his own (Draper mss. 17CC189). He and his brother, James, came with James Harrod in 1774 where James and another man were killed at Fountain Blue (a boiling spring in Mercer County), which served as an effective inducement to return east but John came back with Harrod.....(the rest is about John Cowan) & is on p. 104. I have a James Cowan buying & selling land, but it would have to be John's son who he named James. That James, from 1819 to 1833, was basically from Lexington, KY. & was appointed Commonwealth Atty in the Fayette Court 8-20-1821. He also married Miss Ann H. Neiss of Frankfort, KY on May 16 or (23) 1833. On or about August 1, 1833 he shot mimself & died at once. Do you still want land dates for this James? Hope this helps you. I will do KY. marriages next and maybe that will give you some leads. Carolyn Cowan from Greenfield, IN
