Dear Cindi; I do not know if this is a lead or not but I wanted to bring it to your attention just in case something clicks for you. I want to look into it a little more too because of the Stovall name. My Elias Griffith's 2nd wifes mother was a Stovall. I am the ggg-granddaughter of Edith (Edy) Griffith who married Wilson Cowan abt. 1820. They moved to Ripley Co., Indiana with a lot of the Griffiths & Hyatts. Please let me know if you can add to this. I am sending you my latest findings to-wit: My Elias Griffith was married 2 times. We do not know who his first wife was. There were 4 children by this marriage (according to the census records, will, etc.) One child was my ggg-grandmother, Edith (Edy) Griffith b. abt. 1801, William Griffith b. abt. 1809, 3rd unknown son, & 4th unknown son. We know Edy was born in Caswell Co. N.C. & probably the other 3 were born there too as the 1800 census shows Elias there. By 1810 he moved to Jessamine Co., Kentucky. Aug. 11, 1816 he m. widow Martha (Patsey) Crowder Huckstep b. between 1784-1789 in VA or KY. d/o Sterling & Martha Stovall Crowder (b. abt. 1762). (Note: Somebody got records messed up here because there was another Elias Griffith/Griffin in the area who m. Patsy Cook about that same time frame. But, we have straightened out ours from theirs hopefully, as we now have verified this info.) Anyway, my Elias & Patsey had 8 children together as follows: Martha Ann m. Elias Mahoney; Henry; Elizabeth m. Wm Robinson; Ashbury m. Elenor Kelly; George R. m. Eliza Jane Lee; Caroline M. m. George W. Copher; Hester Ann m. Cyrus Hyatt; Elias N. m. Minerva Young. All of these kids got married in Ripley Co., Indiana except for Henry, and we do not know what happened to him yet. She already had 6 kids by her previous marriage. What a woman, but sometimes you can get clues from those families also) I only have one more William Griffith in my datebase and he married Clara Kroeger on 30 Nov. 1847. His parents were George R. & Elisa Lee above. (grandson of my Eliza & Martha (Patsey) Hope this helps you. Let me know if you need a detailed attachment on these families. I would be very interested if you find out anything else on this family. Best regards....Carolyn Cowan Oberle of Greenfield, IN.
Hi Linda, This son of Elijah named Stephen interests me... I can't find anyone who knows anything about him! Do you remember where you got the info about his marriage to Sarah Russell? Just curious. He just seems to have disappeared... His dates match those of my missing ancestor, Elijah Cowan, and I can't help but wonder if he took on his dad's name after the elder Elijah died (when my Eli was about 12). Maybe he was Stephen Elijah? His birth year, marriage year and wife's name (Sarah) all match my Elijah... I need to find children, census records, etc. for Stephen but am not having any luck... Any suggestons welcomed! This guy has had me stymied for years! thanks for anything! Cyndi in Baltimore

Hi, Linda. This William Cowan was the son of John and Elizabeth Cowan, the early Lancaster Co., PA immigrants. I have that Sarah was the daughter of James Stewart and wife, Elizabeth Davies. James Stewart was the son of Lazarus Stewart and Margaret Steuart. The list of children for William and Sarah needs some revision. There was no "Lawry" or "Sherad." This misreading of a Jackson Co., GA deed was copied into Fleming's "Cowans from County Down." Sherad should be Stewart and I'm not sure what they confused Lawry with. I have a copy of the actual document. I believe there were two other daughters beside Mary Cowan Crockett--a Mrs. Poage and a Mrs. Simpson (?), I believe. I am descended from son Stewart Cowan (1775-1850s) who married Mary Stuart, possibly a daughter of Elizabeth Stewart Cowan's brother, Matthew Stewart. But I'm not sure about that. The Stewart Cowan family and the Mary Cowan Crockett family moved from GA to TN, soon after 1813, settling at the base of Cumberland Mountain in Franklin County. This area later became part of Coffee County and then Grundy County. I have seen the grave of Mary Cowan Crockett and husband in the abandoned Crockett Cemetery there. Stewart and Mary Cowan are probably buried in unmarked graves there, as well. That might be our William or W. A. Was he born North Carolina, 1855/56/57 with a brother Thomas in OK from census records 1890-1920? Parents of our W. A. and Thomas were Joseph Cowan 1825-1907 and Mary Malinda (Long) Cowan who died 1857. W. A. was her youngest child. They also had a brother John Cowan in Bowie County, TX. An older sister, Susan remained in NC, married Isaac Newton Biggerstaff, had two sons and two daus. After Mary Malinda died, Joseph married again in 1862, Margaret Street who would have been their step-mother. Does anything sound familiar? Yes, I would appreciate your information and hope we connect. Many thanks.

Can anyone on the list tell me if William Cowan born 26 Mar 1795 married 1819 Elizabeth Reed/Reid was the son of George Cowan born 4 Sep 1763 and Marjorie Scott born 5 May 1770? OR Was he the son of Elijah Cowan born 1771 and Prudence Stovall born 1773? AND Was Elijah and George brothers, sons of William Cowan and Sarah Stewart? I have tried to find my Cowan greatgrandparents for almost 10 years! George and Marjorie Scott's son William and wife Elizabeth Reed/Reid sound likely since my grandfather William Andrew Cowan named his first son John Scott Cowan born 1877 and for the fact that in an 1870 census William Andrew and his brothers James and John were in the household of an Ann Reed/Reid . PLEASE help me if you can................... Linda
