I'm still here! Just a refresher: Elizabeth Cowan- 14 Feb 1779, PA David Cowan -31 Aug 1742, PA Hugh Cowan- 1680 , Newry, Ulster Provence, Ireland Oops! I just noticed a discrepancy: Could Hugh be in his 60's when some of his children were born? Can anyone help out here? Billie [email protected]
Thanks... I'll jump in as well then. I think Rosemary who just posted and I probably have a common ancestor we've been searching for so maybe one of you can help! I am looking for James Cowan who was born around 1780. He was also in Wythe County, VA and married Margaret. James and Margaret moved to Washington County, VA where he died between 1840-1850. They are buried in Hagy Cemetary north of Abingdon. I don't know but I suspect Rosemary's Elizabeth and my James may well be siblings. Gary
Hi Listers, My name is Rosemary Ramsey Cox. I am searching for parents for Elizabeth Cowan/Cowen born August 1, 1774, died after 1740. She married Josiah Ramsey (born 1769 died 1833) about 1790. They lived in Wythe County, VA near his grandfather also named Josiah Ramsey. About 1800 they removed to Lee County, VA and in 1801 purchased property in Claiborne County, TN. He was a Justice of the Peace and was on the Commission to build the jail in 1819. I believe her father may have been named James Cowan and her mother may have been a Gibbs. There were Gibbs in Claiborne County and Lee County, VA. Any help would be appreciated. Rosemary Ramsey Cox
Hi - I am looking for Cowans who may have lived in the area of West Deer, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania or Amstrong, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. I have Sarah Carnahan who was named as Sarah Cowan in her father, James Carnahan's will in 1808. Sarah was probably born about 1785. I would appreciate any help or leads. Linda Hansen
I added a new member today - he is researching the Samuel and Sarah Keith Cowan Line. Welcome to our Cowan Research group. While I was doing that, I looked for some of the bounces that I have received due to people not removing their old e-mail address when they get a new one!!!! <g> Anyway, I saw so many addresses that I have not a clue just who you are or what line you are researching. This is not good!!! So let's post often enough that the group knows who you are researching along with some idea of who you are when they see your address. Think about it - who wants to go through the archives if they happen to locate some wonderful info that should be in the files of someone on the list, but just can't think of e-mail address or their name. SO POST OFTEN so that we will know just who you are, the area your Cowan's lived, and something to help us help you!!!! Laura Cowan Cooper Cowan List Manager

Hello, In researching my connected BAKER and HILL families in Jefferson and Sevier Counties TN, I have found the following COWAN females that I need to find parents for. I believe these ladies were probably related. James HILL married Margaret COWAN on 26 Nov 1811 Jefferson Co TN Thomas Baker married Nancy COWAN on 09 Apr 1818 Jefferson Co TN. There was also a Mahala COWAN who married Patrick B. ELLIOTT on 21 Jan 1834, also in Jefferson Co. Patrick Elliott and Thomas Baker both migrated from this county to Cherokee Co AL, but I'm not sure of any other relationship. I am especially interested in who Nancy (this commonly a nickname for Ann) and Margaret's parents might have been. If anyone recognizes these names and can place them in their line, please let me know. I would really appreciate the help. Thanks, Teresa Shands

Cindy, Thank you for solving a mystery for me!! The Bible you mentioned in your last post was purchased for $5.00 by Samuel Cowan in 1805 in Knoxville, Tennessee. It went west with Minerva Cowan and ended up in Michigan with Thomas Riegel, a descendant of Samuel Cowan. I never knew Samuel's father was Andrew Cowan of Augusta County, Virginia and a son of one of the seven brothers discussed in Cowan's from County Down (which should be re-titled, Cowans from Counties Derry and Donegal) Just as a point of interest, the Bible was given to me by Mrs. Riegel and now resides in North Carolina, safely in the hands of the 6th great grandson of Samuel Cowan, killed by Indians on the Clinch in 1776 and married to yet another Walker. Regards, Robert Cowan North Carolina by way of Scotland, Derry, Pa., Va., Tn. Alabama and other interesting places
The William Aaron Cowan mentioned in a previous posting was born 24 March 1811 in Powells Valley, TN (probably Campbell Co.) and died 1878 in Todd Co. KY. He was the 4th child of Samuel Cowan and his wife, Mrs. Mary (Polly) Walker Rogers, as per the Bible records of Samuel Cowan. Mary Cowan was first married to a Mr. Rogers and had two sons, Hiram and Lawson Rogers (hence the name Lawson Rogers Cowan of one of William and Mary Ann's sons). Samuel and Mary Walker Rogers married 5 Nov 1804; Samuel Cowan died in Campbell Co. TN 27 July 1832 and left a recorded will. Their daughter, Minerva, (next child after Wm. Aaron) b. 8 Jan 1813, married 23 Feb 1832 to Alfred Kincaid; they moved to Ray Co. MO and took the widowed mother, Mary Cowan and the family Bible with them. She (Mary Walker Rogers Cowan) died in Ray Co. MO 25 May 1859. Samuel and Mary had these children: 1. Cornelius R., b 11 Aug 1805, m. 29 Mar 1827 (rec. in Bible but no wife's name) 2. Newton Cowan, b. 6 Mar 1807, m. 4 Feb 1827 to unknown; 2nd to Zilpha Horn 11 Aug 1842 St. Joseph, MO 3. Mary, b. 21 Feb 1809, m. Mr. Todd 4. Wm. Aaron (given above) 5. Minerva (given above) d. 4 Nov 1883 probably Ray Co. MO 6. John F., b. 8 July 1815; d. aft 1833 7. Amey, b. Apr 1818, d. 8 July 1818 8. Eliza Rachel, b. 12 Nov 1824, m. 4 Feb 1843 to T. H. C. Mode, d. 23 Nov 1848 This Samuel Cowan, father of these children, was the son of Andrew Cowan, who was christened 27 Sept 1741 in August Co. VA and died in 1798 in Jefferson Co. TN and his first wife, Mary Walker, who died bef 1793 probably in Russell Co. VA. I have been searching for a Samuel Cowan with a son named William (my ancestors), so I spent a great deal of time researching this family, only to learn that it wasn't mine. Cindy Henslee Stamps
