    1. [COWAN-L] Standard of Living vs. Quality of Life
    2. A gentleman once told me the difference between Americans and Europeans was simple. Americans live to work, Europeans work to live. This is true. Come to Charlotte, the new city of the South and ride through neighborhood after neighborhood of million dollar houses, drive into the city center and marvel and all the new buildings, world headquarters for Bank of America, Duke Energy, Wachovia. It is impressive, this city of trees and growth and sprawl and congestion. In February I will become a grandfather for the first time. My daughter chose the road less travelled and after leaving Virginia Tech with her Hokie husband (a mechanical engineer) decided life would be different and exciting some place far from home. They live in Untersiggenthal, near Baden, Switzerland and work for ABB, the General Electric of Switzerland. He designs gas turbines, she is a graphic designer, they can see the Alps from their bedroom window on a clear day. There is no crime. There are no poor people. You can not tell how wealthy people are by the number of cars in the driveway because they all have one car, a BMW. There is no garbage, no landfills. They send the garbage to France for a fee. Switzerland is beautiful. France is beautiful too, but has lots of garbage. The most difficult decision my daughter makes each day is to decide how to get home. Do I take the bus and walk the last couple of hundred yards through the village or ride the train one stop to Turgi and walk along the river and enjoy the wild flowers. Michael loves to ski. They can see the Alps. Amy and Michael love to hike. They can see the Alps. My wife and I had a bet as too how long they would last in a foreign country, the language is strange, you can't find Grape Nuts, and your family is far away. She said a year or two, I said your dreaming. Michael once told me he could stay in Switzerland for the rest od his life except for family. He loves to ski and hike and this is Switzerland. They are going on four years now and the baby will be born in Baden. Being born in Switzerland does not make you Swiss, they are very pragmatic and will send you home if your services are no longer desired. Baby Griggs will have to be content being an American. But Baby Griggs will come home some day. Family is important and it will begin to tug on them one day, this feeling of being part of something, this feeling of missing family. What will they come home too? Will they be disappointed or will they be able to adjust to they way they used to live. Charlotte has lots of money, a high standard of living. It has crime and bad air and urban sprawl. The are few parks. Switzerland has lots of money, a high quality of life. It doesn't have crime, the air is nice, and they ride the bus. The entire country is a park. Standard of living vs. Quality of Life. We all have choices to make. They will come home one day. Regards, Robert Cowan

My records show that Margaret Cowan was born in Drum, County Cavan, Ireland. Do you have records showing that the Cowan family is from Scotland? Their October 18 1850 marriage was in Inveresk, Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, so presumably she moved from Ireland to Scotland sometime before her twentieth birthday.

    1. [COWAN-L] James Marion Cowan - Tennessee
    2. John T. Spradling
    3. Hello List, James Marion Cowan is my Cowan brickwall. He was born at an unknown date and place. He had two sons by his first wife, names all unknown, and upon her death the boys went to live with her family (parents or siblings). He was a Confederate Veteran and his unit is believed to be the 11th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. He had a brother, in another unit, who was wounded in the Civil War, but James himself was not wounded. James married a second wife, Eliza L. Bond of Fentress County, Tennessee after the Civil War and they had a son, Samuel Henry Cowan. Samuel was born 13 October 1867 and grew up in and around Byrdstown, Tennessee. After James Marion's death, Samuel and his mother, Eliza, lived with his grandfather, Samuel Bond. When he became an adult, Samuel Henry moved to the near vicinity of Dallas, Texas. James Marion died of consumption about June of 1868. It is believed that he died in Vicksburg, Mississippi, while seeking treatment for the disease. Most of this is family "word-of-mouth" information. If anyone recognizes anything here, any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, John

    1. [COWAN-L] The Witness Tree
    2. A couple of years ago a gentlemean sent me two large color photographs. The first was a picture of the stump of the witness tree located at Donegal Springs Church, East Donegal Township, Lancaster Co., Pa and second was a copy of the historical marker with the following inscription. "Beneath this witness tree a new born patriotism found notable expression On a Sunday morning in September 1777 an express rider came to tell the congregation of DONEGAL CHURCH that the British army under Lord Howe had left New York to invade Pennsylvania. This news demanded from them all a new attitude toward the facts which challanged them to show proof of their patriotism. Their pastor the REV.COLIN McFARQUHAR had been accustomed to offer prayers for the King of England. Pastor and congregation gathered under this historic tree, and together joined hands, and under its shade pledged their loyalty to the cause of liberty and the founding of a new nation in this western land. The Rev. Colin McFarquhar was a graduate of Edi nburgh University, Scotland. A scholar of the highest attainments and finest Christian character, he came from Garelock, Dumbarton county, Scotland near the Firth of Clyde, and on May 22nd, 1776, was received into the Presbytery of Donegal. For ten years he was separated from his family who were detained in Scotland until after freedom was declared, when they rejoined him in Donegal. His pastorate in this church lasted for thirty years until 1806, when upon the death of his wife, he resigned his charge. He died in 1822 at his daughters home in Hagerstown, Md. and his remains were brought here where they lie in God's acre nearby." Among the names of the families who were members of Donegal church about that time were the following: "Acker, Agnew, Allison, Anderson, Bayley,Bell, Bynes, Caldwell, Cameron, Cassel, Chamberlain, Clark, Clingan, Cowan, Craig, Curry, Emmock, Evans, Fulton, Galbraith, Hays, Henry, Howard, Hutcheson, Jamison, Johnston, Kelly, Kerr, Keys, Little, Lowery, McClure, McKean, McLlan, McQueen, Mears, Mayes, Mercer, Middleton, Miller, Montgomery, Moore, Muirhead, Patton, Patterson, Pedan, Porter, Robertson, Scott, Spears, Sterrett, Stevenson, Templeton, Thompson, Vance, Watson, Whitehall, Wilson, Woods, Work" The stump must have been at one time a most impressive tree. It is huge. Regards, Robert Cowan North Carolina, where it is finally raining!

    1. [COWAN-L] Edward Cowan
    2. Audrey Sundstrom
    3. Good Morning Cowan researchers, I don't post often so I thought I would just to keep me up-to-date on the board. I'm looking for Edward Cowan (no middle name), my gr Grandfather. The following is what I do know. Edward was born in 1836 in Blyth, Ontario, Canada. There seems to be two Blythes in Ontario. Blyth, Morris Township in Huron county and Blythe Township in Nipissing District. I don't know which is one he was born in. The next event I know of is he married Mary Emily Hemstreet on December 30, 1877 in Freeborn, Freeborn County, MN. That puts Edward at 41 when he married Mary Emily. Mary Emily was just 16 years old. I know that Edward and Mary had their first child, Bert Edward in Austin MN on January 24, 1880. Their second child Lovella Cowan came on November 10, 1883. I don’t know where she was born. The assumption is Austin however there is a three year difference so they could have moved on to Watertown SD by then. Albert Angus “Gus” was next on April 1, 1885. He was born in Watertown, Codington County, SD. The next three children were all born in Watertown. Grace on April 10, 1887, Charlie in 1889 and Carrie Ethel on June 28, 1891. Effie was born on February 28, 1894 in Stanley, Manitoba. Norman Lester (my grandfather) followed on October 17, 1896. This means Edward and Mary must have moved from Watertown, South Dakota to Stanley Manitoba sometime between 1891 and 1894. Charlie died sometime in 1900 in Miami, Thornhill, MB, Canada. I don’t have a place of birth for Lillian but she was born on February 14, 1899 and Annabelle was born in December 21, 1900 in Morden, Manitoba where she grew up and attended schools. Mary died on Jan 24, 1907. She was buried in Waterville, LeSeur County, Minnesota but there is no obituary. She might of died in Morden Manitoba Canada? The next event I have is his death on April 8, 1921 in Hannah, Cavalier County, ND. Where was Edward between 1836 and 1877? Most importantly, what were his parents names? After two years I haven't been able to answer these questions so I'm open to any suggestions! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DMQ.2ACIB/828 Message Board Post: My great-grandfather, Franklin A. Six, may have been married to an Ellen Cowan, according to my family bible. (No dates, birthdates, marriage dates avail). My grandfather was allegedly born in Johnson City TN Oct 17, 1894. A handwritten entry in same bible states: "Ellen Six dide (sic) August 2, 1896". I've been browsing various databases in and around TN, and am so far, unsuccessful. Franklin was on 1900 census, living with his father Samuel, on Samuel's farm Reed Creek/Crockett's Depot in Wythe County; both enumerated as 'widowed'. I have no information as to how/where/when Frank may have met/married Ellen. The only other document that supports this possibility is my grandfather's SS-5 he submitted in the 1940's, where he lists his birth city as Johnson City TN; and his parents as Frank Six and Ellen Cowan. Any guidance provided would be gratly appreciated. Roland A. Six Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy SEABEES, Retired Post Office Box 2101 Woburn MA 01888-0101

    1. [COWAN-L] Cowan - descended from Stephen Cowan (1825-1907) and Elizabeth Long (1828-1908)
    2. Hope Coslett Pees
    3. My Cowan ancestor is: Margaret Leanne COWAN who died March 25, 1859 in Oklahoma. Margaret Leanne COWAN was the daughter of Stephen COWAN (1825-1907) and Elizabeth LONG (1828-1908). Elizabeth Long was the daughter of Solomon LONG (ca 1805-) and Elizabeth BYFORD. I'm not certain of Solomon Long's parents, however he had a brother named Esquire "Squire" Long born about 1804 who married one Malinda BYFORD May 4, 1829 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Malinda Byford was the daughter of John BYFORD (1770-1850) and Oma MADTEN. Stephen Cowan was the son of Samuel COWAN (ca 1772-ca 1831) and Sarah Margaret KEITH. Margaret Leanne Cowan (daughter of Stephen Cowan and Elizabeth Long) married Jesse Edward GLENN (1848-1902). The Glenns were from Ireland/Scotland/England and from there to South Carolina, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. Jesse's maternal ancestors were Cherokee and Scottish. ________________________________________ Hope Coslett Pees Seguin, Texas [email protected] http://www.geocities.com/jouettseguin/1remington.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The mind is its own place, and of itself can make a Heaven of Hell, or a Hell of Heaven. ~ Milton ~~~~~~ The Hunger Site: http://www.thehungersite.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/CTDSites
