    1. Immigrant Covey descendants based on Quist
    2. Kathryn Bassett
    3. As I was trying to figure out the father of William Covey of Butternuts, Otsego, NY. (18 Jun 1765 - 19 Oct 1845), I spent some time interpreting the information in the Quist books (mentioned in Covey Resources posting). In the below info, I have put the Quist ID numbers and page references for these early generations. I've also put in the possibles and impossibles for the parentage of Wm. Based on my analysis, I suspect that John COVEY (b.1717 d.1818??) is either the father or grandfather, though there are a couple other candidates in here too. Hopefully some day, someone will find more that will prove or disprove my theory. Don't be concerned with the RN and ID numbers, I just didn't want to take time to edit them out. 1. Covey Resources

    3. It has come to my attention, as a result of a private exchange, that there are some newbies on the list who may not be aware of two Covey resources. One is a two volume set of books by Mary Lancaster Quist. It's called the "Ancestors and descendants of Walter Covey Dutchess County, New York (1750-1824)". There is a copy at the Family History Center in Salt Lake, but I don't believe they have microfilmed it. I have a set but unfortunately do not have the time to do lookups. I believe there are at least one or two others on the list who have copies of the books. See seperate post regarding my interpretation of the early generations. [Unfortunatly, there are some missing links in the books that don't answer who is the father of William Covey of Butternuts, Otsego, NY. (18 Jun 1765 - 19 Oct 1845), though there is a connection as one of the Kingsburys and one of the Hopes were in there for awhile too. I suspect that John COVEY (b.1717 d.1818??) is either the father or grandfather, though there are a few other candidates as well. See seperate post.] The other resource is one of a query nature, the Covey GenForum page. It can be found at: http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/covey/ I don't follow it myself (no time), as personally, I prefer the list rather than deliberatly seeking out queries on the web. However, there may be people out there who are posting to that, who don't like mailing lists, so there are probably queries there that aren't on this list. -- Kathryn Rhinehart Bassett (Pasadena CA) kathryn.bassett@switchboard.net "Genealogy is my bag" "GH is my soap" http://pw2.netcom.com/~kathrynb/kathryn.htm ICQ World-Wide-Pager address http://wwp.mirabilis.com/17663458

    1. Re: COVEY List
    2. Hi, I'm glad that you will still be using the COVEY List, I'll be watching for your posts. I didn't mean to give the impression that I was berating our cousins. Gosh, if I did that, I would have to scold myself as I am a COVEY cousin also. What I was trying to say, apparently not very clearly, was that the list cannot be held accountable for us not writing to, nor answering queries on it; I hope that is behind us now. I am going to post this to the list so if others feel I was scolding, or in any way, not being respectful to our cousins, they will know that it wasn't meant that way. Larry Baker

    2. Hello, I was wondering if listing our Covey family members by State would be of any help. I have the 1907 marriage and birth index for WI and there are many Coveys that aren't mine, at least I don't think so. Some of my family went to MN and then on to WA and some have ended up in Alaska. Just a thought. Sue

    2. Hi Ann, I think the problem that you experienced is, (I hate to say it), more the fault of us cousins and less the fault of the list or AOL. Please give the list, "... one more last chance", as the song says. The message I sent to the list, generated quite a bit of response from many of our cousins, hopefully others will follow their lead. I thought if we sent messages about what we have rather than what we want, our list would stand out from the myriad of other sites like newsgroups, guest books and etc., that post mainly queries, and would accomplish the same thing, disseminate information. I will be hoping to see your name on a posting real soon. Larry Baker Ps: You said you were changing your address so I am cc ing the list. Also, please send me your new address.- LB

    3. Here is my closest Covey ancestor: Dora Dee COVEY born 26 Sep 1856 in Schuyler county, Illinois (d. 1932 Wyoming) to John COVEY, born 1830 in Washington county, Ohio and Minerva Ellen TRACY, born 23 Jan 1838 in Fulton county, Illinois, md. 1854. Her parents were divorced when she was a baby, and John married (1860) to Nancy Jane HEMPHILL in Brown county, Ill. and had several other children. I have a COVEY question in general. Does anyone know if any of their ancestors or families had an eye disorder, where the men are nearly blind by adult hood? We know that Dora Dee COVEY is a carrier of a rare genetic eye disorder, but we can't trace it back to any other family. It may have been passed to her from either her father, COVEY, or her mother,TRACY. But to this point, we have not seen anything about the men in either the family lines becoming blind. The women would carry the gene, but only the boys would be affected. If any one is interested in any more detail, let me know. She was married twice, with children and grandchildren/ grt grandchildren from both marriages affected, so we know she was the carrier. Aren't genetics interesting? 3. Just wanted to let you know, as well as other COVEY researchers, that I am trying to put up a YARNES-YARNS-YEARNS site as soon as possible. I have located several other YARNES researchers, and we really need a location for this. Just about every YARNES out there has a connection to the Dutchess County area. It is likely one big happy family, much like the COVEY family that disappeared in Dutchess, only to re-emerge in Washington County. One of the earliest YARNES I can locate, is Thomas YARNES, b. c1742 who was of Kingsbury, New York, and whose eldest son was GILBERT YARNES. This YARNES family had to have been close to the COVEY family. Let me know of any interest in this page and I'll let you know when I get it up.
