Does anyone know who is the John Covey listed in the War of 1812 Pensioners: served Capt R. Leavin's Co NY Militia thanks (again!!) Denise
Uriah Covey & George Washington Covey were brothers and sons of Alpheus Covey. Uriah went CA, and George OR. I am told by husband of deceased descendant of Uriah that they used Cuhvey & George's descendants used Coovey. I have spoken to Covey cousin in OR and she claims that the family used to joke and say the ones who used Cuhvey were the snobs. Since the only Coveys she knew were distant relatives, they must have said it differently. If info I was given is correct, you have descendants from same person saying it differently. My guess would be that Cuhvey was original way. Carol Eliasof

Is he Covey or Hovey Ebenezer Covy is listed in the 1810 census index as living in Franklin County in the town of Crosburg Vermont. Microfilm of 1810 census lists Ebenezer Covy on page 315 in Franklin County town of Enosburg, not Crosburg, with a family of 6 (2--1- 2--1-) Presumably Ebenezer and wife with 4 children under 10. Enosburg (FALLS) is about 25 miles from the Alburg Vt home of Samuel. It is almost twice that distance to N Hately Que . There was a Ebenezer Hovey (loyalist from Conn.) who settled in North Hately circa 1793 >From http://www.travelpresskits.com/aubergeh/pk.html ...The history of North Hatley is fascinating indeed. Its roots go back to the American Revolution when a number of families, declaring their loyalty to King George of England, fled the thirteen newly formed American States and resettled in North Hatley near Lake Massawippi. Some of their farmhouses still exist, some in fine shape. Long used as a hunting ground by the Iroquois and Abenakis, the land around Lake Massawippi was first settled by white men just over two hundred years ago. Ebenezer Hovey, a Connecticut militiaman who was the first white man to discover Lake Masswippi in 1793 built the first log home here and later obtained a land grant from the Crown. By 1803, the settlement of North Hatley was created. Pioneers from that time were buried in an old village cemetery that still exists..... There is no mention of Ebenezer Covy in the 1800 or 1820 Vt Census. Does anyone have data on the older Ebenezer Hovey of North Hadley Que. Who were his children. Is Ebenezer a Ebenezer Hovey Jun. Or is he one ot the 3 over 16 males listed with Samuel Covey of Alburg in 1790. If he is of Samuel he would have to have been just shy of 16 in 1791-92 (census date). As records show Samuel with wife and one child in late 1777.
Please remember everyone, that the Samuel COVEY who appears in the 1790 Champlain, NY census is the same Samuel COVEY in Alburgh, Grand Isle, VT. Many folks showing in the Alburgh census were also listed for Champlain, NY. In answer to Chris Covey's pondering about subject pronunciation--I have for 54 years used the long "O" when saying my name. One may also conclude that the long "O" sound is in keeping with the french derivation of the name which is spelled "Couvee" or pronounced like Covay (long "o" sound). Reference for the above is found in the ARMORIAL GENERAL by J. B. Rietstap (Heraldic Book Company, Baltimore, MD, 1967). Jan Covey

How do you pronounce COVEY As a Covey, I have fought a life long battle for the long O sound. Like in Cove, an inlet or bay. I have met 4 of 5 other Covey's, not in my family. and all but one used the long O pronunciation. Steven Covey, the author and Richard Covey the astronaut, seen to use the short o sound. Like in covey, a group of partridge. My brother who has a job in which he deals a great deal with the public uses the short o Covey in business and the long O Covey in his personal life. It is just easier that way. Covey Hill town in Canada and Covey Hill Roads in Canada and Chittenden County, Vermont are refereed to by the long O pronunciation. I was wondering this when looking up possible name variants. I heard the name Cooley used on an English TV show and it sounded just like Covey (Long O). If I had not seen the name written on a piece of paper in the show, I would not have known that the name was COOLEY. With many early Covey's signing their X, could some of them, have been pinned to another tree. So what is the consensus long O or short o.
