Well, I had lots of great responses to my query for Elaine Johnson. Thanks so much. I will try again by email and snail mail. Denise Sallee
I have written her several times, and she has never responded, so I'm not sure what it takes. pam At 08:16 AM 5/14/99 -0700, Ralph Sallee wrote: > >Does anyone know how to contact Elaine Johnson? >I have some information that she might be able to help me verify >regarding a Covey. >Thanks >Denise Sallee > > *************************************************************************** Pam Wood Waugh moodies@magicnet.net or 730 Dunhill Drive, Orlando, FL 32825 waughp@ocps.k12.fl.us My Family Lines: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3500/ My Eastern Township (Quebec) Research site: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3500/et.html List-Owner for QC-ETANGLO-L, COVEY-L, SALLS-L, TRYON-L and WAUGH-L **************************************************************************
Does anyone know how to contact Elaine Johnson? I have some information that she might be able to help me verify regarding a Covey. Thanks Denise Sallee

Have not seen any mention Chloe as a daughter of Nathan. > >Dency > Chloe COVEY, Yes I am sure that was the name. Couldn't remember except that it was an unexpected name, to me, for the 1790's. Not positive proof of Nathan Covey but he headed the only COVEY family within 50 miles in the 1790 census. Vermont became a state in 1791 and I read somewhere that the 1790 census in VT was taken in 1791-92. I was thumbing through town histories when I found it. I will check out the book when I go back. What can you share with me on the Covey family. I and others are trying to tie Samuel Covey of Alburg Vermont to the MA-RI-CN-NY line. Sounds like you are active in that area. At that time there must have only been 100-200 Covey's in the US / Canada. I have a feeling that Nathan of Bristol Cn and Vt. are cousins to Joseph of Acton and Samuel of Alburg. and also to the Covey's of NY. Do you know of Samuel of James II who was also brother to a Joseph >From a LANPHERE web site: Sarah LANPHERE b. 1 Mar 1687, Westerly, RI, m. abt 1707/08, James COVEY. But a Samuel And Joseph were in Chesterfiled NH in 1770 The Joseph IS Joseph COVEY of Acton (Johnsons Gore) SOURCE! "History of Chesterfield" by Oran E. Randall-1882: >>"COVEY, Joseph, here in 1770. >>COVEY, Samuel, m. Mary _______. Had a son, Samuel, b. June 3, 1773." >> Also Philip Skene must enter the picture for our Samuel. I could have sworn that I read some where Skene had offered 120 acres to any one who would build a mill in Skeensbourgh (spelling?) now White Hall / Fort Ann NY. I can't refind that .. and I might be confused with a Remember Baker account stating a similar offer, but not from Skene. At any rate, in that neck of the woods, it is a stones throw fron NH across Vt to NY. And the Covey's of NY were carpenters and James IV had a mill, or was it James III in NY. I ramble Sorry. Let share data... so many names and so little time.
Does anyone know who is the ELISHA COVEY living in Skaneateles Twp, Onondaga Co NY in 1830? thanks - just need to eliminate any possible contenders. Denise Sallee

In an off-list post, I was asked: > You refer sometimes to a "Landphear" chart. > Do you know where I could get a copy of this? Landphear is a misnomer as it is more Covey than Lanphere, but I chose that name in my records to distinguish from other Covey stuff, and one generation of Lanphere is included. How I got a copy: My (husband's) cousin inherited a lot of misc research papers from their mutual great grandfather Edwin Andrew Covey (1865-1963) who's grandfather was the William Covey of Butternuts whom I have posted about. There was a hand-drawn chart in those papers. (There is a remote possiblity there is a copy of the chart in Salt Lake, but I can't be sure of that. If it is there, it would be in the cases that are beside the map cases on the first floor.) In this post are the pertinent parts. Obviously I can't duplicate the chart's format, so I'll just group pieces together best I can. = = = = = This chart was made by Fred M Sickler, grandson of Fred V Sickler and his wife Elizabeth Covey. Elizabeth Covey was a granddaughter of Elisha & Elizabeth Covey, both of whom were born in the year 1770 and during the year 1790 resuded in Rensselaer Co. NY. A while back I promised to post the Covey entries in this book. William would be my Wm born 1765 died 1845, and married to 1) Esther Yarns, 2) Betsey Coon (mine), and 3) Nancy Smith. The names Hope and Kingsberry prove there is *some* connection with the descendants of the 1640 immigrant, but just exactly who are these people? Since William's first son wasn't born until 1797, then these names have to be his contemporaries or elders. Are they brothers? uncles? cousins? Who is Daniel? The only Daniels in the Quist book are all born after this time period. And of course, which John, which Hope, which Joseph, which Kingsberry? I suspect the latter 3 are the sons of James & Mary (Lanphere) Covey, but where do Daniel and John fit in, and how does William fit in with the rest? Covey Entries in the day Book for the store of William Musson in the town of Butternuts, Otsego County NY (Day Book covers 7 May 1802 2 23 Feb 1803) The original book is at the public library in Butternuts, in the basement genealogy collection. The book can be looked at, but copies only from the typed extract. Spellings are as in the typed extracts. Hi, In Washington Co., Ohio almost all the deed records have been transcribed as COREY but when you compare the names it is certain they are COVEY. I have found this to be true in many places and feel it might be the problem with loosing the early Coveys. I have never found one starting with "K" which at least keeps us in the same beginning letter but I have found the following possibilities: Corey, Coney, Couvey, Covy, Cove, Covee, Couveigh, Couve I used to write to Mrs. Quest and I think a lot of her research was based on things sent to her from other researchers, at least for the later years. I'm not sure about the early generation or two. Hello, Have a couple of things to add. Cooey is another possibility to be looking at while researching the Covey name. My James Covey was listed as Cooey in the WI death record index. I also have another surname to add, to the Covey descendants. Sylvester Covey's daughter, Olive Covey b September 18, 1878, married Silas Steele in 1892. They had two children that I know of Edgar and Myron Steele. She later married Irvin Brown. Sylvester was b July 17, 1841, in Stanstead Canada. This group of Covey's all lived and died in WI. I'm not sure what happened to the Steele boys. This is new info. Sue
One way to check spelling aberrations is by going through the alphabetical listings of: "Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families, 1620-1700" compiled by Frank R. Hello, I found Carol's information on the Brookfield, Madison Co., NY cemetery quite interesting but would appreciate some help on sorting this out: All of these people lived in Brookfield and appear to be Seventh Day Baptists. Jesse Covey married Salena Palmiter. Children: 1. Lucien Lafayette Covey who married Phebe Sherburn He was born 15 Aug 1823 and died 14 Jan 1864 in Walworth Co., WI 2. Fances R. Covey 3. Kates S. Covey Jared Covey married Polly Cleveland He was born 1783 and died 1868. She was born 1785 and died 1860. Children: 1. Lucetta Covey 1806-1883 2. Alexander Madison Covey 8 Apr 1815-26 Mar 1855. He married Elizabeth L. Greene 3. Julius Covey 5 June 1820 - ?? Jared was the son of Jared Covey and Prudence Clark or Maxwell. It looks like Jesse is also a son. Does anybody know for sure? Thanks.
