But as Hannah does not appear as Hannah, I'm still trying to reckon her into James Hope Jr.'s line. By the legal docs, sworn to by her brother Joseph of Willets - she was over 85 in 1835 and over 90 in 1840 - so that makes her dob in 1750 and according to the Covey records - there was no Hannah as such born into the family. Hannah had a daughter named Malissa, a daughter named Hannah and another named Rhoda, all in that birth order. And there are family rumors that there were twins commonly born in one of our families - perhaps she got lost that way - I haven't kept posted references either. Too soon old, too late smart.

It reveals even more, but I will save that for another way. Ezekiel Cady was one of the supporting affidavits for Hannah. There is no list of the children of James and Mary. People assume there is because they're listed in a family group sheet in Quist's book. She clearly states what her source is: (a) the August 1844 Nauvoo Temple Baptism for the Dead performed by Benjamin Covey; and (b) the Rev War Pension file of Joseph Covey. Yes, that's the same Joseph Covey who provided a supporting affidavit for Hannah. Yes, he lived in Willett, Cortland County. And his pension application contains a supporting affidavit of his brother Hope Covey. The reasoning in Quist's family group sheets is that Joseph should be added to the list of Benjamin's (b.1792) uncles, because Hope Covey who was Benjamin's uncle is the same person as gave the supporting affidavit for Joseph's pension application. I agree with this. Hannah was not dead in 1844, so there would be no way for her nephew to perform a proxy Baptism for the Dead naming his deceased aunt, as she was not deceased yet. So there is no need to make her into a different person. She was not dead in 1844. That is the only list there is, the 1844 Baptism. I also believe one, possibly two, other siblings belong in that group of siblings. My Johnsons were from Connecticut, but moved through New York State beginning sometime between 1790 and 1800, ending up in Wash. Co. OH in the late 18-teens. I'm descended from Kingsbury Covey, who lived in Chenango County and in Cayuga County, NY before moving to Wash. Co OH at the same time as his son-in-law. You can always tell who has done their research and who has not when you see people say that Kingsbury Covey was born in Moravia, anytime from 1715 to 1775. All of those times are impossible. Moravia was wilderness and Indian territory until nearly 1800. Jim

The original headstone, which no longer stands or can be found, stated - Hannah, wife of A. Carley, Jan. 15, 1846. Any written documentation that would have been recorded by Cook County was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The Cadys arrived in Cook County in 1837 but it is unknown whether Hannah came with them or arrived by other family members - there were several siblings and cousins who eventually appeared in Palatine - so as yet, I have not direct records of that. In the documents related to Hannah's filing for widow's benefits - in 1835 she stated she was over 85, in 1840 she stated she was over 90 - so her time of birth would have had to be in 1750. I think she may have been in reality - Malissa (Ma'ssa) as her oldest daughter and first born was also named Malissa and the name is also carried by many of her grandchildren. Her second daughter was named Hannah, another name carried by grandchildren. This make me think that her middle name was Hannah and that she used it instead of Malissa. The fly in the ointment is that none of James Hope, Jr. and Mary Lamphere Covey's family lists show a daughter born in 1750, so if you can find her, I would be very grateful. To my knowlege, Joseph Covey is the only Covey to have lived in Willets and the name and place of residence are clearly those of him. By family speak, there were lots of twins born in the family - Could she have been a twin of Joseph? - he is the one said to have been born in 1750 --- Any light you can shed would be appreciated. Judy You are not related to the Johnson/Washburns by any chance, are you?

I did not know any of his sisters' married names before your post. Thanks! Benjamin Covey (b.1792) performed the Baptism for the Dead at the Nauvoo Temple in August 1844. At that time, Hannah Carley was still living, apparently, so he had an aunt named Hannah who is not named in the Temple Baptism.

He was born 12-2-1922 and died 8/83. He lived in Union City, Pennsylvania. His mother and father were Pearl Stein Covey and Albert Covey. He had one brother who we believe was named Clarence. Cecil's father left him and his mother when he was a young boy and we don't know what happend to Clarence. Cecil always said that he was kidnapped. We also think that his relatives come from the Clymer New York area. His mother remarried and became Pearl Williams. Cecil was married to Evelyn Morris Covey and they had two children, Mary Louise Covey Smith (my grandmother) and Reginal Covey. We are interest in finding anyone beyond my Great Grandfather Cecil. We never knew anything about his father Albert or his other children from his second marriage. We would love to learn more about his family.

Covey with their children, Solomon D. (Solly), William and Sarah, came to Forman, Sargent Co., ND, from Six Lakes, MI. in the middle 1880's. George W., was born in Forman in 1889. Daniel filed on a claim a mile west and a mile north of Forman. The land is now farmed by Danny and David Jacobson. They also filed a tree claim a mile and one-half north of Forman where they built their first house. At the housewarming they made candy by dropping tablespoons of maple syrup onto the snow. They had bought the maple syrup from Michigan. Son, George, remembered that his father left home at 4 a.m. with a wagon load of grain to go to a small settlement a few miles to the northwest where there was a water powered mill. He would return late at night with a load of flour (stone ground) shorts and bran, having paid the miller in kind. George also remembered trips to a river near Lisbon to pick plums, the only fruit available at the time. Solomon married Elizabeth Orth ! (Walt Orth's aunt). They lived in a small house which was east across the street from the Congregational Church. Their two daughters, Josephine and Edith, are remembered by some of Forman's senior citizens. "Solly" operated a dray line and hauling service. The family moved to Canada about 1900. Son, William, left Forman in 1908 for Wyoming. Sarah married "Joe" Taylor who ran a barber shop where the present theater is until they moved to Nebraska. George, the last son, left Forman in 1906 to attend college and eventually became a physician practicing in Lincoln, Neb. Daniel and Mary Covey, the procreators, also moved to Lincoln, where they are buried.
